Being cool and staying coolBASF pioneers a unique solution for solar heat management

The challenge of effective solar heat management led us to develop asolution for lowering heat absorption and increasing energy conservation. This development has found many applications, from building roofsand cladding to construction and marine applications, providing less energy consumption and an enhanced personal comfort.

Dark surfaces exposed to sunlight heat up by absorbing incident sunlight and converting it into heat, while light surfaces refl ect more of the incoming energy. BASF’s advanced Paliogen® and Sicopal® functional black pigments prevent this from happening.

Carbon black, the most commonly used black pigment, absorbs the complete solar radiation. In contrast, our functional black pigments refl ect or transmit invisible near-infrared (NIR) radiation that accounts for more than 50 percent of total incident solar energy. But because they completely absorb the visible light, just like any conventional black pigment, the optical impression of blackness is preserved.

For carbon black, the Total Solar Refl ectance (TSR) is typically less than 5 percent. By using Paliogen® Black or Sicopal® Black, TSR values in excess of 30 % can be achieved, even for black or very dark color shades. In practical terms, this improved TSR performance can result in a surface temperature decrease of up to 20 °C.

Carbon black is used in almost all coating shades. By using BASF’s functional black pigments, the same shades can be achieved while simultaneously reducing internal building temperatures and saving CO2 emissions as a result of the reduced need for cooling.

Besides our black pigments we have the ability to provide products for cool shades in other color areas.

Staying healthy and happy Providing a viable alternative to lead chromates and molybdates

Balancing what we would like to have with what we can realistically achieve on a socio-economic basis has always been a tough and ambitious target. At BASF, we have succeeded in enhancing our extensive portfolio of pigments with a range of new options, including organic and inorganic pigments.

The broad scope of applications and systems that industrial coatings need to deliver requires an extensive range of products that are suitable for many different purposes. These include features such as long-term durability and heat stability for exterior cladding production, pure aesthetic appeal for internal domestic goods or the high visibility needs of engineering equipment.

BASF’s wide variety of industry-specifi c solutions are centered on a direct organic pigment approach, typifi ed by the Paliotol® and Irgazin® ranges of organic pigments. These product families offer high chroma values and are used in combination with our Sicotan® and Sicopal® ranges of inorganic pigments to provide additional support for high opacity, heat resistance and durability.

We also offer the ability to specify tailor-made solutions. Our T-Shade™ concept allows our customers to precisely defi ne specialist tones, such as a specifi c corporate color or shade, which can then be applied on virtually any commonly used substrate. These recipes can be produced to a degree of accuracy that both reduces inventory levels and minimizes time-consuming quality testing requirements.

Creating the perfect mixInnovative mixing schemes increase choice and reduce stock levels

BASF’s mixing schemes create more choice and new marketing opportunities for paint producers. These solutions not only increase the range of color options but also help to reduce production time, lower the number of pigments needed for your portfolio, drive down stock levels and increase your ability to supply paint on demand.

10

Our approach to the challenge of optimizing product quality and fl exibility, as well as helping to enhance production processes, initially started in decorative coatings before quickly gaining further ground within the industrial paints market. In addition to an outstanding color range, we are able to offer extremely high quality consistency, especially when working to tight specifi cations.

The high-chroma products used in our mixing schemes are typifi ed by an increased color space and excellent rheology characteristics, allowing them to meet the exacting demands of all current dispensing systems. Our Paliotol®, Paliotan®, Cinquasia®, Heliogen® and Irgazin® product ranges provide high chroma with high strength and broad color space, making them suitable for a wide variety of industrial coatings applications.

When these products are used in conjunction with our special Sicopal® and Sicotan® inorganic pigments, they offer outstanding durability and cost-effectiveness for the opacity requirements of both deep and pale shades. BASF pigments typically display excellent fl ow characteristics, giving you the fl exibility of high pigment loading to achieve the different opacity levels you need while also creating the potential for solvent reduction.

The high-chroma and high-opacity features of our products can be used to reduce the product inventory of paint-producing companies while still maintaining the goal of providing an extensive color palette for the end user.

Paliocrom® and Paliocrom® Brilliant have been designed for exceptionally high intensity and purity of color in combination with high opacity bringing higher fl exibility in paint recipe formulation, as well as in application (for example, spray coating), independent of the substrate.

Metallic effects are also proving of increased interest among consumer goods. Our Metasheen® products give you the ability to create a variety of stunning visual effects, from chrome through to white metal in form of color or mirror to liquid metal in form of surface feel.

Sales of sporting goods and consumer electronics are particularly infl uenced by exotic, powerful coating effects. Firemist® and Firemist® Colormotion allow you to capture the desired eye-catching instant appeal factor without compromising either technical demands or your unique color space.

Sometimes it is simply adding a tinted clear coat varnish over a corporate color – using one of our Lumina® mica-based pigments – to preserve the authenticity of your most important shade while giving it a new dynamism that will increase its attraction to the consumer.

Effect sells! We are helping you to be more successful with our expertise in trend colors. Our in-house styling group does regular trend scouting at relevant fairs and in cooperation with color trend agencies. We translate these trends into colors for industrial applications. These color formulations are based on apigment selection designed to the specifi c market requirements.

Our extensive effect pigment portfolio comprises coated mica, coated synthetic mica, glass-fl ake technologies, bismuth oxychlorides, coated aluminum fl akes and vacuum metalized pigments.

We offer our mica range in two grades; each has been developed for use in specifi c applications: The exterior range with our proprietary chrome-free surface treatment for powder coating, coil coating or other applications where improved durability is necessary and the industrial grade for interior applications.

Our R&D departments are continuously working on new developments to make further advanced effects possible.

Lumina® and Lumina® Royal stand for highest color intensity in mica-based pigments, thanks to controlled and optimized particle size distribution. They can be used to create a wealth of colors and effect never-before-seen for silken and luminous surface design. Both allow the experienced stylist to maximize the visual impact of consumer electronics such as mobile phones or small appliances with extreme luxury colors in high chroma shades.

Like a light dusting of crushed diamonds, Glacier™ Frost White brings a dynamic and shimmering whiter-than-white pearlescent effect. Glacier™ Frost White is based on synthetic mica, which is transparent and free of colored impurities, and therefore seems dazzlingly white to the eye. Glacier™ Frost White creates clean, blindingly brilliant whites and cool, timelessly modern grays, charcoals and blacks, while intensifying greens, blues and reds.

Using effects to create added valueBASF effect pigments play a major role in creating

We live in a world of constant change and individualism and the need to catch the eye of the consumer has never been greater. Our effect pigments give you the power to boost the vibrancy and impact of the colors you use without compromising their integrity.
