4. On Rainwater Harvesting! Meaning of Rain Water Harvesting: Rain Water Harvesting as a method of utilizing rain water for domestic and agricultural use is already widely used throughout the world. It is a method which has been used since ancient times and is increasingly being accepted as a practical method of providing potable water in development projects throughout the world. It has wide application also in urban and semi -urban areas where the reliability and quality of piped water is increasingly being questioned. For centuries the world has relied upon rainwater harvesting to supply water for household, landscape, and agricultural uses. Before city water systems were developed rainwater was collected (mostly from roofs) and stored in cisterns or storage tanks.
Benefit of save rain water Water is the most precious gift to the humanity by the nature. Life on the earth is possible only because of water. Three-fourth surface of the earth is covered by the water even after people are suffering from water scarcity in many regions of the India and other countries.

Difficulties faced by the people in various regions because of water scarcity teach us to conserve and save water in order to protect the water environment, save life and save world. Importance of water in our life Water is the most essential source of life on the earth as we need water in every walk of life like drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, growing crops, plants, etc. We should save water for proper supply of water to future generations without contaminating it. We should stop misusing water, manage water usage properly, and maintain the quality of water.
5. Importance of Time
Value of Time
Reference – Time is said to be eternal. It is said that it has neither a
beginning nor an end. Yet men are able to measure it as years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds. They have also given meanings to the words – past, present and future. True, time has a meaning. It moves. What was yesterday is not today. What is today will not be tomorrow. Yesterday is gone. Today is and tomorrow is yet to come. Yet time is said to have no holiday. It exists always.
Value of Time in our life The entire creation moves on according to a time pattern. There is
birth, growth and death. There is time for everything. Plants flower and give fruits. Seasons come according to time. A child is born, grows into boyhood, adolescence, youth, middle age and old age according to age and time. Time is a free force. It does not wait for any one. It is commonly said that time and tide waits for no man. Time is money. A minute not usefully spent is an eternal loss. You can never get back the lost minute. One has to strike the iron when it is hot. The time flies and never returns. If you waste time it wastes you.
Those who do not know the importance of time, waste it or rather they spend it doing nothing. There is a proverb which says that killing time is not a murder; it is a suicide. It means, by wasting time one is not harming others. On the other hand one is harming himself. Ordinary

If one wisely plans his activities, there will be time for everything happening according to time. A man who is a part of nature cannot complain against time. Time is powerful. It conquers all. Men are only to obey it. Man cannot say that he has nothing of his own. Time which is valuable is all his own.

challenge before the whole world. Not only India but also the
whole world is facing the problem of pollution. Governments are
taking major step to solve this problem.
Definition The addition of any harmful element into water, air
and the level of unwanted sound called the pollution.

Water Pollution
There is 70% water on the Earth but less than 3% water is only to

I – TYPE PASSAGES [WORD LIMIT --- 150 WORDS]
Passage – 1 We sometimes think that it would be very nice to have no work to do How we envy rich people who do not have to work for their living but can do just what they please all the year round. Yet when we feel like this we make a mistake. Sometimes rich people are not as happy as we think they are, because they are tired of having nothing to do. Most of us are happy when we have regular work to do for our living, specially if he work is what we like to do. The first think work does for us is to give us happiness. He is like a beggar in the streets who take the money of others who work hard to earn it. Such people do not live independently and ought to feel ashamed of the mselves. But the honest worker who earns his living by useful toil can hold up his head and respect himself. Lastly regular work builds up character. It teaches us such good habits as punctuality, carefulness, thoroughness and faithfulness in work. It is the man who works, not the idler, who as a rule develops the best character.
1 Why do we envy rich people? 2 Why are rich people not so happy as we think? 3 What does regular work give us? 4 What kinds of people have been compared to beggars? 5 How can an honest man earn respect in society? 6 Write the word from the passage which means ‘a person who
does not work’. 7 Write the word from the passage which means ‘hard unpleasant work’.
Passage – 2 Your behavior is the key to your success. Well behaved persons are always well-known in society. A polite teacher can create interest in students to learn more and more. The students also listen to him very carefully and they find his teaching very interesting and easy. The smiling face of a doctor increases the healing ability in the patients and makes a rapid recovery in them. His behavior helps them more than medicines. The patients feel much better in his presence. Such a doctor is always successful in his profession. A well-behaved officer is always popular

among the subordinates. His soft voice inspires the clerks to work well. He always gets his work done in time.
1 What is the importance of one’s behaviour individually and socially? 2 What can a polite teacher achieve? 3 How do patients feel in the presence of a well-behaved doctor? 4 What inspires the clerks to work sincerely? 5 How is a well behaved officer benefited in his office? 6 Find out from the passage the word which means ‘pesonnels with
less authority than somebody else in an organization’. 7 Give from the passage the word which is opposite of ‘failure’.
Passage – 3
Books are the chief carriers of civilization; because of the, ideas live and spread. How important books are, you can judge from the fact that very hot countries as it is well-known, are slow in becoming civilized in the modern sense. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most important is that the white ants which live in tropics, eat up all the books. For example, in tropical South America, there are practically no books, more than forty years of fifty years old. Where there are no books, there are no records and no literature; the ideas and knowledge of one generation can only be handed down by word of mouth, and it is much more difficult for the race to progress and become civilized. But it is not use having books unless people can read the, and learning to read is a part of what is called education.
1 How are books important as chief carriers of civilization? 2 Why are very hot countries slow in becoming civilized? 3 Why are there no old books in South America? 4 How does the lack of books affect the progress of civilization? 5 Is it enough to have books for becoming civilized? 6 Find out from the passage the word which means ‘pieces of
writing valued as works of art’. 7 Pick out from the passage the word which is opposite of
‘ignorance’.

Even today in the materialistic world, it is honesty, sincerity and integrity which paves the way for future success and pays much in the long run. Though for the time being dishonesty, unfairness and black-marketing lead to huge profits yet after some time the evils recoil upon the doer. So character is the solid basis of success even in trade and commerce. Honest and fair dealings in business always lead to contentment, success and prosperity.
