tired of the kids staring at screens all day?...

t s resolution, nautical training corps are currently looking for new cadets.

The primary objective is to provide experience of a variety of outdoor activities, especially sailing and canoeing which we do at Hedgecourt Lake, Felbridge during the summer. We also go camping, swimming, orienteering, a weekend away in Portsmouth boating on the sea, etc. We have lots of “hands on” training for young cadets, both boys and girls, between the ages of 8 and 18 years, to give them confi dence, social awareness and team building skills.

If you were a cadet from way back in the 1960’s to the present day, do come along for an afternoon of reminiscing, remembering about tying bowlines, sailing, camping, ironing uniforms and seeing some old faces. Bring your family along as there will be lots to do, with a bouncy castle, games, quizzes, photos, tombola, sailing games with a buffet lunch and a welcome drink!

the commencement of Bluebell

Steam operated services.

tornado is the fi rst engine in

Gardening Tips for MAY

Bulbs✔ in late May, after the soil temperature has warmed, plant summer

fl owering bulbs such as gladioli.

✔ dahlia tubers can also be planted now.

✔ remove dead fl ower heads from daffodils, hyacinths and tulips.

Shrubs✔ early fl owering shrubs such azaleas and rhododendron should

be pruned after blooming and can be fertilised at the same time.

✔ it is still an ideal time to plant shrubs. dull showery weather is most suitable, so long as the soil is not “sticky”. Farmyard manure or soil improver compost can be added to improve the soil. any acid loving plant requires ericaceous compost.

✔ pot grown shrubs are most ideal for planting, as the roots do not get damaged. it is better to plant as soon as possible to enable the new roots to have as much time as possible to establish themselves before the end of the growing season.

✔ after planting, water the shrubs and then mulch with chipped bark or similar. if there is a dry spell after planting is may be necessary to water.

✔ Faded fl owers need removing from rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. the plants may now be cut back as far as the old wood (do not cut into old wood) and then fed with an ericaceous feed.

✔ Forsythia and other spring fl owering shrubs need to be given a hard pruning straight after fl owering. hollies, laurels, Bays, rhododendrons and conifers can be moved or trimmed.

Veg� abl� ✔ Main crop potatoes not yet planted must be put in as soon as

possible. early potatoes may be “earthed up”.

✔ continue to make sowings of lettuce, radish, Beet, carrots and runner and French Beans may be sown, along with spinach, swede and later in the month sweetcorn.

✔ Brussels sprouts, cabbage and celery plants may be planted out when they have been “hardened off”.

in particular the Felbridge

detachment.

On a national level the acF

has over 1700 detachments with

over 4400 members. surrey acF

has 25 detachments across the

county.

a company is made up of

5 detachments; our company

includes: Felbridge, lingfi eld,

reigate, horley and caterham.

every detachment recruits

youngsters between 12 (in school

year 8) and 16, cadets must

leave as a cadet once they are

18yrs and 9 months. We are also

recruiting for adult instructors

(above 18 yrs) previous Military

or cadet experience is not

necessary as full training is given.

all detachments parade on

Monday and thursday evenings

between 1925hrs and

2130hrs. On these

evenings the cadets

are trained by qualifi ed

adult instructors and

senior cadets on the

following; drill, skill at

arms, expedition training,

First aid, Military Knowledge,

shooting, Map and compass,

physical training and

Fieldcraft.

there are also training

weekends, a two week

camp in august and trips away

including germany, egypt,

cyprus, Brunei and australia.

cadets can also take part in

adventurous training including

parachuting, climbing, Kayaking,

Mountaineering, Obstacle

courses and diving.

there are also opportunities for

cadets to gain qualifi cations such

as the duke of edinburgh award

and a Btec diploma.

economy’s monthly economic

signals were so strong in early

april that recovery Watch had

to double check to make sure

theses were not an april Fool

stunt.

the fi rst positive indicator

was that UK output in the fi nal 3

months of last year was revised

up to register growth of 0.4%, the

second upward revision to output

in a row.

the second positive indicator

was that the key housing index

showed a bounce in house prices

in March, reversing most of the

decline seen in February and

reinforcing the suspicion that the

earlier fall was related to cold

weather.

the third indicator was the

manufacturing main index

which showed output growing

at a faster pace in March than

at any time since 1994. in fact,

manufacturing surveys around

the world showed output surging,

pushing stocks and shares to their

highest price in 18 months.

More good news came from

the Bank of england’s quarterly

review of credit showing that

lenders reported a much greater

than expected drop in defaults

of loans to households and

businesses.

ISAs: so what are you to make of

it all as you consider how to use

your new individual investment

account (isa) of £10,200? the

best decision is probably to place

it all in stocks and shares for long-

term growth. however if income is

your priority then corporate bonds

and gilts are probably the answer

as they give tax free income plus

a prospect for growth. But don’t

forget that past performance

of shares, bonds and gilts is no

and that their value can go down

as well as up.

For the faint hearted and

risk averse you can use up to a

Every year for the last 20 years

members of the EG Justice and

Peace Group and a group of

young people have slept out in

the High Street to raise money

for national and local charities

helping the homeless. In that time

over £60,000 has been raised

through sponsorship, street and

pub collections.

saturday 19 June 2010 sees

our 20th event and we want to

make it a really special day by

raising even more money for

crawley Open house, the easter

team, and Worthing churches

homeless project. there will be a

street collection in east grinstead

throughout the day so please

contribute what you can.

all our three charities do

amazing and ground-breaking

work with homeless people,

which remains a real issue in these

diffi cult times. homelessness can

happen to anyone – over the

years we have heard fi rst hand

from people of all ages and

different walks of life. When we

sleep out young people come

and tell us their experiences of

sleeping in cars and on friends’

fl oors when they have left home

because of family break up and

violence. a University lecturer,

ex-service personnel and ordinary

people in debt and despair have

all told us their story too; mental

illness, loneliness, alcoholism

and drug addiction sadly all play

their part.
