nyone involved with education in the Los Angeles Archdiocese knows the names

of John and Dorothy Shea. As Father WilliamMuller states, “John and Dorothy Shea’s long-term involvement with and support of VerbumDei have quite literally made the difference inkeeping the school open and in developing the school into the Catholic college prep, Jesuit, and Cristo Rey school it is now.” “My wife and I and our company got involved with the school about twenty years ago,” says John Shea. “We approached thearchdiocese and got involved with the building program. In 1989 we helped build the VerbumDei gym. My wife and I are delighted the wayVerbum Dei is turning out. The Jesuit commu-nity and now Father Muller have really done alot.” John Shea began his illustrious con-struction and real estate career after graduatingfrom USC with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1949. He went to work for his father’s company, the JF Shea Company – a company founded by John Shea’s grandfather. The com-pany got its start in 1881 as a plumbing busi-

about how animals adapt and learn to live in their environment. Most kids especially com-ing from the inner city don’t really know that much about wild animals.” Also new to the Verb this year is Sony Pictures Entertainment, making it the first major entertainment company to partner up with the Verb. After getting a studio tour that included watching the building of a movie set, the students have dived into their work in the HR department. Stephanie Fleming, an HR associ-ate, says, “It’s been a joy working with the Verbum Dei students. They work here in the HR department helping us with various administrative tasks. They’re all very hard working and very polite, very eager to learn and help us achieve our goals.” Stephanie continues, “The biggest surprise about the students was that they were able to do a lot more than we expected they’d be able to do. It’s also a surprise how much everyone in the HR department has taken a real liking to them and enjoys chatting with them, not just in our department but other departments.” We certainly look forward to continuing our work with Sony and opening the doors to other entertainment partners.

Spanish teacher, Ms. Ana de Castro, was recently recognized by Yale

University as a top teacher. Every year, incoming Yale Freshmen have the oppor-tunity to nominate a teacher from their high school. Ulises Ceja, class of 2009 and a Freshmen at Yale, wrote an essay about Ms. de Castro. She was selected as a winner from among 175 nomi-nees. This is both a testament to Ms. de Castro’s teaching and Ulises Cejas touch-ing essay. Ulises learned a lot from Ms. de Castro in the three years that she taught him. She says, “I remember Ulises' first essay. It was a five paragraph essay where he had to write about his daily activities and I remember Ulises not being able to finish the assignment in Spanish. But through his intelligence and effort, at the end of three years, he was able to write essays analyzing literature and score a five on the AP exam.” Ms. de Castro, who has been teaching for seven years at Verbum Dei, is scheduled to complete her Masters in Education from LMU this December. “It has been a real challenge for me because I’m not only a teacher, but I’m also a sin-

gle mom with three kids of my own," she says. "I have so many priorities.” Ms. de Castro has managed to balance all of this and take four classes per semester. In the program “I’ve learned new theories, teaching methods, and strategies that I didn’t know before. I also learned a lot from the other teachers in my class-es.” Ms. de Castro keeps her students intrigued and challenged in her class. “I give them a lot of essay assignments that have to do with the environment, human trafficking, and a lot of social issues that we address in a Jesuit education. They don’t expect that in a Spanish class. It’s not just learning the alphabet and num-bers in Spanish, it’s helping them to ana-lyze.” The all male classes really responds to poetry, although at first they are reluctant to share their emotions. “Many of my students discover that they have a talent for writing. I have them write in Spanish and then translate into English.” The students get to see the strengths and variation of each language. Congratulations to Ms. de Castro.

ness. When Mr. Shea started at the company, he worked in the tunnel busi-ness. "By the time I was 30, I was out developing business and getting jobs for the company," he says. "I like the construction business. It’s very satisfying to see the completion of a big job.” The JF Shea Company has evolved over the years from its humble beginnings in plumbing to becoming the nation’s largest home builder. “In 1958, the company was liquidated, and my two cousins and I reformed the company,” says Mr. Shea. “It was the same organi-zation but just new ownership.” “In 1968 we started our homebuilding company - Shea Homes. Now, we are building homes through all of California; Phoenix, Arizona; Denver, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; and to a smaller extent, Florida.” Although the company has been highly profitable, they have seen their fair share of challenges. The construction business is susceptible to economic downturns. “We saw downturns in the early 70s, in the early 80s, the early 90s, and now we have the worst downturn that we have ever seen,” says Mr. Shea. “But, in the 41 years we’ve been in the business we’ve had some good years and built some beautiful developments that we are very proud of.” Amidst this economic downturn, John Shea and his wife Dorothy have continued their support of Verbum Dei. They also currently employ a CWSP team. Verbum Dei High School is proud to be a partner with John and Dorothy Shea.

A Word From The PresidentDear Friends,

The fall public radio membership drives were slightly annoying, but it was OK to be reminded that there’s no free lunch. I was particularly taken by KUSC’s promo that they are unique in Los Angeles as the only classi-cal radio station on the airwaves. That was a reminder, too, that there aren’t many unique realities.

Well, we are in our own membership drive and we really are unique.

There is certainly no free lunch for the young men who come to Verbum Dei for a Catholic, Jesuit college preparatory education. They have to work very hard to make up for an often deficient elementary and middle school classroom experience. For the last two years, every Verbum Dei student who has made it to graduation is now in college, most to four year colleges and universities. They work very hard at their student internships, most of them earning consistent “good” and “excellent” evaluations. They work very hard at co-curricular

activities and sports using their limited time well.

Our students can only “pay for their lunch” by their hard work and their desire to succeed in high school, in college, and in life. So Verbum Dei needs a “membership drive” to actually pay for the lunch, to cover the cost of educating these terrific young men who just want a chance.

Verbum Dei is the only high school in Southern California whose mission is to serve only those who are underserved by the economy and by education. We are the only school in Southern California with corporate partnerships providing student internships for each and every one of our students.

Our program is unique. Our needs are unique, as well. We have to raise funds for tuition aid for our students (most students receive tuition aid because their families cannot afford the $2,900 tuition) and for scholarship funding (every student is here on scholarship for the $3,000-$4,000 cost of education beyond tuition and the student internships).

Please “renew your membership”! We are a one-of-a-kind school – we need your help!

God bless you,

William Muller, S.J.President
