Hello From Your New HCBC President! I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself and say hello. My name is Liz Saunders and at the HCBC Board meeting in early November, I was elected President of Horse Council BC. Before I go any further I must thank Orville Smith, our outgoing President for the amazing job he has done representing Horse Council. He traveled to many equestrian events in BC over the past four years. Thanks Orville, you have provided a great example and I intend to do my best to keep up the good work. As for myself... I have been a Zone 1 (Kootenay & Boundary area) Director for seven years and was VP of Competitions for the past three years. My love of horses goes back as far as I can remember. As a child growing up in England, I spent most of my time at the local riding stables. After immigrating to Canada and buying property I was finally able to have my own horse(s). I was an active and involved Pony Club Mother when my daughter enrolled in the local branch of Pony Club. Over the past 35+ years I have held most executive positions at the local, rural riding club level and organized and run numerous shows for clubs in the Central Interior and the Kootenays. I worked for the Ministry of Forests for many years where my jobs included supervising staff in the mapping department and organizing and minute taking for Land Management Planning. I live on a small acreage in Crescent Valley (between Castlegar and Nelson) where I operate an active boarding facility.

Heuschmann explores what it means tobe a "responsible rider," and askswhether, in today's society, it is indeedpossible for riders in any horse sport toput the good of the horse first andforemost-most pointedly above ambitionand fame. With fabulous art to helpshow the anatomy of the horse and howit is impacted by various ridingtechniques, as well as further proof that-although some steps have been taken toprevent the use of forceful and crueltechniques in the training of top horses-many sport horses still perform in painand discomfort, this book is sure tofollow in its bestselling predecessor'sfootsteps. Dr. Heuschmann's argumentsare based in his experience as aveterinarian and his knowledge of theworking equine's body, and are certainto ring true with every serious rider whoalso claims to be an avid horse lover.
