I couldn’t help but cringe as I read the poorly worded title ‘ Gandhi up for grabs’ in a certain news article. Even as the Indian government clamored for the material possessions of a certain dhoti clad, charkha-spinning Satyagrahi, one certainly wonders what the great man himself would have to say if he were witness to this hullabaloo. Someone very appropriately opined that he would have probably laughed and get back to milking his goat.Personally I feel he would have been extremely perplexed at the astounding million dollar bids for his spectacles because to us he has given a gift that transgresses all material possessions. For it is the legacy of the man, that no one can snatch, buy, beg or bid off us. Interpret it as non-violent Satyagrah or the more modernized form of Gandhigiri the message rings clear. Even 60 years after his death, his philosophy still holds value. It is high time we all take a leaf from his book and truly understand the power that one lone individual can possess. The power to change, to question, to reason, opine and act. It is only when we realize and acknowledge the onus of the magnanimous task that rests on each of us, that we can actually begin shouldering the responsibility.

Lets stop c o w e r i n g behind false p r e t e n c e s and break the strands of complacency. From Sabarmati to Dandi, Gandhiji walked in the wooden slippers that we all were hankering over. He paved his way through all obstacles to bring about a change. So is it now not our responsibility to carry forward this change? I’m not suggesting one attempt a march of similar proportions. In our case, the solution is far easier. For us it is a measly walk from our house to the nearest polling booth. With the scheduling of exams in such a manner that they terminate before the electoral process begins certainly removes whatever hurdle could have been imposed. With the Dandi March, Gandhi lit a small spark. Let us prove that the fire of this revolution shall not be extinguished in our presence. As a nation it is absolutely essential that we realize owning the mahatma’s spectacles amounts to nothing if we lack the ability to share his vision.

Through the eyes of Gandhi...
