The police have opened inquiry intothe death of a five-year-old boy.Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

George Ledwaba said that the childwas found dead on Saturday, 1 March,after he went missing the day before.He said that the child was reported

missing on the night of Friday, 28February and an all-night-long searchwas conducted, which brought theunfortunate success in the morningthe following day. He was found deadin a trench between Phomolong Ward5 and the township’s Ward 1, near abridge to the highway.

police in Potgieter Street betweenMotorland and Autozone.According to Bela Bela Police

Spokesperson Glen Manamela a total oftwenty-four motorists were found in

Police spokespersonWarrant Officer James Findlay saidthat suspects usually break intopeople’s houses during the day andoften steal cell phones, laptops andflat screen TV’s.He added that people should continuepractising neighbourhood watch andinstall more security measures intotheir households. He further said thatcases of domestic violence reportedare serious and that this is adisturbance to the police and thesociety at large.

Teen in trouble with the law againhousebreaking in the past month thelast of which was on Thursday 27February.The teen was sentenced to complete

a diversion program at the BosasaPlace of Safety in Polokwane.He is expected to appear before the

Bela Bela Magistrates court onThursday 13 March.In a brief telephonic conversation,

the teen’s mom was very emotionalwhen she expressed herdisappointment at the situation.She said that she does not

understand why her son has allegedlycommitted the crimes.

The teen who was arrested forallegedly assaulting a 21 year oldman in Lethlabile Park last monthhas found himself in hot water again.The 15 year old was arrested by

Bela-Bela police for allegedhousebreaking.This comes just a few hours after

his second court appearanceregarding the assault where he wassentenced to undergo a two weekdiversion program.He has since made three court

appearances in connection with the

19-year old alleged murderer out on bailshe didn’t have a criminal record.“I’m working on a nearby farm and

only earning a very small amount. I’malso taking care of my mother and Ican only manage R500 bail,” shesaid.According to information received,

the two had been on good terms priorto the incident, during which thewoman is alleged to have set herboyfriend alight with the use of aparaffin stove.Manganye will be attending court

again on 22 April at the Bela BelaMagistrate’s Court.Police are still investigating the

case.

spokesperson, Gerrit Reynders, acouple residing at the resort wereattacked with anaxe by fiveintruders.It was reported

that Manie deBeer (70) andRachelGroenewald (48)were allegedlyrestrained withwire and givenseveral blows to the head with theaxe.Reynders said that Groenewaldt

managed to free herself and rushedout of the house to look for help.“Groenewald managed to free

herself from her restraints and ranabout 150 meters away from wherethe incident occurred”, he said.Groenewald sustained injuries in her

back where she had an operationthree weeks prior to the attack.Both De Beer and Groenewald

The hopes of 260 Bela Bela localsenrolled in the CETA Learnershipprogram were dashed this month whenthe programme was paused untilfurther notice.Students demanded to be told why

their stipends had not been paid.The situation at the Bela Bela show

grounds was tense last Friday,following accusations of fraud againstprogram coordinator Butane Mabunda.A case of fraud has been opened

against him, as he is alleged to haveused fraudulent matric certificates toenroll a number of students.Students became angry when Bela

Bela mayor Freddy Hlungwane tried toaddress them before classes were dueto start. Police were eventually called into calm the students, who werebeginning to threaten violence and burntyres.Hlungwane had to be escorted away

from the scene by police.There were also students at the police

station with their documents. They had

apparently been informed that theyneeded to re-register in order to complywith regulations.With the suspension of the

programme coordinator, theprogramme itself will be put onindefinite hold.One student, who refused to be

named, said that she was disappointedthat the learnerships were stopped.“Some of us were hoping to get

experience and certificates so that wecan build our futures, but because ofsome ambitious people things have

gone wrong,” she said.Some of the students come from as

far as Rapotokwane and Masakhane,while others have left paying work toseek greener pastures.These students are targeted as

workers in the EPWP. The Learnershipprogramme targets those who will havethe best chances of succeeding assmall contractors and construction sitesupervisors.Attempts to reach the Mayor or the

Municipal Spokesperson wereultimately unsuccessful.

Explosion claims four officers

An accident approximately 15kilometres from Mokopanehas claimed the lives of fourpolice officers and left threeinjured. The officers wereattending to an accident, onthe N1 highway betweenPolokwane and Mokopane,involving two trucks at 01:00last week Thursday.The collision between two

trucks — one carryinggroceries while the othercarried explosives — resultedin a massive explosion sometime after impact.According to Limpopo Police

Spokesperson Ronel Otto,the officers at the scene weresecuring the area and tendingto the wounded.Otto said that the driver of

the truck carrying theexplosives ran away from the

scene while beingquestioned.“The driver of one of the

trucks was being questionedby police when he suddenlyfled from the scene. It isbelieved that he knew that thetruck was going to explodeand wanted to be in a safearea,” she said.It was reported that the

explosion has left a craterwhich measured eight metersin width and almost twometers in depth. Otto saidthat the explosives involvedare usually used in miningand construction work.Forensic investigators spent

the entire day at the scenetrying to determine the causeof the accident.It was reported that very little

of both trucks had remainedafter the explosion and thedriver of the truck carrying

groceries was burnt beyond recognition.Otto said that the four deceased

officers, Const. Masethe ReubenMoloto (38), Const. MonwabisiLawrence Setlako (37), Const. MateaneJohn Mahlokoane (35), W/o LesokaJoseph Mafane (48) will be sorelymissed by colleagues, friends andfamily.Otto confirmed that two of the threeinjured officers had been dischargedfrom hospital the following day whilstthe third had to have his leg amputated.Otto said that an investigation is being

conducted to determine the cause ofthe accident.

Branches of the ANC in the MogalakwenaSub-Region requested for a special councilsitting, which was declared successful andunited. Delegates from 21 branches in theANC attended the council, which was thefirst in the year 2014, just a month after thelaunch of the ANC Manifesto.The council received presentation on

items including assessment on the recentvoter registration and reports on theBranch General Meetings (BGM) inpreparation for the recent provincialelective conference among others.On the assessment of the recent voter

registrations, the council, after a thoroughanalysis appreciated the good work doneby members of the ANC from variousbranches.On the subject of BGM’s, the council

raised a serious concern about thedisturbing trend of branches beingestablished on top of other branches bythose who occupies strategic and highoffices in the ANC structures.Discrepancies were identified in that

parallel branches have been launched,BGM’s were not properly convened and

some branch leaderships were not invitedto the congress in December. It was alsonoted that parallel BGM’s were confirmed;some branches failed to go through BGM’sbut were represented in the congress andsome branches which are not in goodstanding are not qualifying to the provincialcongress and no reasons were given bythe leadership.Selokela said that due to the above raised

matters, branches had to distancethemselves from all the outcomes of theconference, which was held in Decemberand reiterate their support for the currentleadership of the sub-region, including onthe elections work.The sub-regional council reaffirmed its

position to support the leadership of thesub-region it has taken to conference. Thecouncil condemned all efforts to underminethe work and existence of the sub-regionalleadership.Based on the observations of the

branches regarding the process towardsthe past regional conference and thedisputes by affected branches, thecouncil resolved not to accept theoutcome of the said regionalconference.

A total of 32 councillors from theMogalakwena Local Municipality haveresolved that all councillors and officialsimplicated in the KPMG report besuspended with immediate effect.This was resolved during a Special

Council held at Lleka Lekalakala CouncilChambers on Tuesday, 25 February.Those implicated include Mayor TlhalefiMashamaite, Chief Whip David Langa,Technical Services Chairperson SamuelMontane, Special Projects ChairpersonMalose Tlhaku and Corporate ServicesChairperson Victor Mashamaite.The council further resolved that the

offenders should be suspended withtheir salaries from February, and that allmunicipal property in their possessionsuch as laptops, cell phones, and themayor’s vehicle should be returned tothe municipality.The council further resolved that all the

money misused should be recoveredfrom them. It was also resolved that theofficials who are also implicated in theKPMG report, Community ServicesManager Merriam Molala and Managerin the Office of the Mayor AsnathMabusela, face a disciplinary hearing.“This follows after the mayor’s

demanded that all these executivemembers, the mayor and the chief whipbe recalled with immediate effect. TheDA is contemplating pursuing legalaction to ensure that the report is beingdiscussed in council as a matter ofurgency.Smalle said that those that are being

pointed out in the report must also beheld accountable and that the DA willfurther open criminal charges againstthem

Oscars week in the US, and a veryimportant film took home BestPicture.The film 12 Years a Slave, directed

by Steve McQueen, was the first filmdirected by a black man to win theprestigious Academy Award for BestPicture. It also starred Kenyanactress Lupita Nyong’o, who becameonly the sixth black woman to takehome the Academy Award forPerformance in a Supporting Role(otherwise known as the Oscar forSupporting Actress). Lupita is thefirst Kenyan to ever win an Oscar,and the fact that she won it for 12Years is…phenomenal.12 Years a Slave is not a

comfortable film. It’s not your typicalHollywood awards fodder. It’s a harshlook at the reality of slavery inAmerica. It doesn’t pull any punchesor sugarcoat a single truth. Nobodythought it would win, even thougheverybody thought it should,because, watching this film, one isreminded that these things stillhappen.The story of Solomon Northup, who

is kidnapped and sold into slavery, isstill happening.Around the world, as you read this

in 2014, an estimated 29, 8 millionpeople are living in slavery. Let thatfigure roll around in your mind for abit. That’s nearly three times thepopulation of Gauteng in 2011. It’smore than half the total population ofSouth Africa.According to Wikipedia, that’s more

than the total number of slaves aliveat any one time in any country duringthe time when slavery was legal.29, 8 million people, in the year

2014, living in bondage.Isn’t that sickening?But what, I hear you say, am I

meant to do about it?Edward Burke once said, “All that is

necessary for the triumph of evil isthat good men do nothing.”There’s always something to do.

International human rights groups likeAmnesty International are alwayslooking for volunteers. You don’t evenhave to donate money — donate yourtime to helping raise awareness ofthis issue.Every person living in slavery in the

21st century is a mark of shame onus, the citizens of the world.WE allow these predators to exist.

We buy products produced by slavelabour in countries like China andIndia.We are guilty of perpetuating the

system, and it needs to stop.

Sadly many people fail to seetheir own uniqueness and gifting inlife and live their life through othersand by pleasing others. You areperfect, gifted and part of God’sspecial plan on earth; do not sellyourself short by comparing yourselfto others. You are just too special.Be encouraged today to stop

A career councillor from the Departmentof Labour in Waterberg, EdwardLedwaba, addressed a group ofparolees from various correctionalcentres in the district during a careercounselling session held in Mokopaneon Tuesday, 4 March.In attendance during the session were

stakeholders from the LimpopoEconomic Development Agency (LEDA),the Department ofAgriculture, theSmall EnterpriseDevelopmentAgency (SEDA)and the LimpopoEconomicDevelopment,Environment andTourism (LEDET).Stakeholders

presented theirschooling, careerand business opportunities to theparolees as part of their programs.In his address, Ledwaba told the

parolees that the greatest recipe forsuccess in life is commitment, educationand dedication. He also urged them tolisten attentively and take in as muchinformation as possible, as it will equipthem in their lives after their sentences.A representative of LEDA, Sylvester

Kgaripana, applauded the commitmentgiven by the parolees, saying that theonly way that they can get back on theirfeet is to approach agencies such asLEDA and seek help.“I invite you to visit our offices as we

help people like you to start businesses,either big or small. Our help entailsregistering of a business and gettingfunding. We also help with cooperatives,where a group of people come withvarious expertise to start one business,”she said.One parolee, who identified himself as

“Agencies such as LEDA and theLEDET will help in guiding us to pursuebusiness ventures and be self-employed, especially because it is quitedifficult to find formal employment with acriminal record,” Mashilu said.Another parolee, who identified himself

as Monama agreed with thedeclarations, saying “this goes to showthat we are not the forgotten elements inour society and this must be appreciatedin deed”.

“Some of us havealready startedsmall business andwith the help ofthese agencies wewill grow morewings and alsopass employmentto the localcommunitymembers in need,”Monama said.Kwena Maleka, a

representative from the Department ofAgriculture, said that there are a lot ofopportunities to leverage on in theagricultural sector. He said thatprograms such as “fetsa tlala” (eradicatehunger) can be helpful to the parolees,as it is an opportunity for them toreceive manure and seed to plant,provided they can prove that they haveland.Maleka said that there are other

initiatives such as Nguni, where thedepartment loans business people cowsfor a certain period of time, after whichthe cows are returned, leaving thebeneficiaries in possession of calveswith which to start their own businesses.Daniel Mabote from Correctional

Services said these initiatives will go along way in giving the parolees a reasonenough to never offend again.In conclusion, Ledwaba said that their

department has lined up more of thesesessions this year and thus far theyhave seen the impact, as some of theseparolees are employed while othershave started small businesses.

Municipality assists in firehydrant problem

“It often happens that a faultyunderground pipe will be worked on andspillage from a hydrant a few blocksaway will occur”, said Moloto.In Haultshauzen’s case, Moloto said

that residents must make sure that theyreport faulty hydrants to the correctmunicipal department.Moloto then requested that The BEAT

contact one of their maintenanceworkers to assist in Haultshauzen’ssituation.The BEAT’s journalist told the

maintenance crew about the faultyhydrant in the area. He questionedwhether or not repairing the hydrantwould be done immediately or within acouple of days.They said that they were attending to a

situation at a sewage plant, but would bethere shortly.True to their word, the maintenance

crew responded within minutes to thescene and repaired the hydrant.The crew reported that a stubborn

valve had caused the leakage but it hasnow been repaired.They had also been working on a burst

pipe in the area since the early hours ofthe previous day.Moloto said that all queries and

complaints should be lodged to themunicipality via their customer servicenumber where all queries andcomplaints can be assisted with.The Bela Bela Municipal call centre

A Bela Bela resident recently contactedThe BEAT regarding the condition of thefire hydrant outside his home inKretchmar Street.Johan Haultshauzen said he is very

upset about the fact that the leaking firehydrant outside his home had not beenrepaired.Haultshauzen said that he reported the

faulty hydrant to a municipal worker inNovember last year and had not yetreceived any response.The caretaker of the area, George

Chabalala, said that he had beenunable to cut the grass surrounding thehydrant due to the water leakage.“The last time I tried to cut the grass in

the area the weed-eater broke. I think itwas due to a power surge caused bythe water,” said Chabalala.Chabalala said that he sees this

leaking hydrant as water waste from themunicipality’s side and hoped that therecan be some sort of intervention.“It doesn’t help that the municipality

tells us to use water sparingly, but theyin turn waste water,” he said.A reader of The BEAT’s sister

publication, The Post, sent a photo of afire hydrant in Van der Merwe Street,also spilling massive amounts of water.The manager for Technical Services in

Bela Bela, Jimmy Moloto, said thatoverflowing hydrants are usually causedby maintenance on underground pipes.

The care and safety of children is oneof the priorities of the Isibindi organi-zation. This non-profit has partneredwith Bosele Drop-In Centre in thebattle to get a safe park where chil-dren can play in peace.The project’s aims are to create

places of safety where children canplay under adult supervision.According to co-ordinator Sydney

Mbokani, the key ingredient forsuccess in this project is the nurturingassistance of youth care workers.“Children like to play where adults

are,” he said. “They like to play withadults and get involved in structuredactivities and games.”

The CANSA shaveathon at Pick n Pay this weekend was reckoned asuccess, with people coming away with colourful or shaved heads. Isibindi looking for a safeplace for kids

The Safe Park Project offers thepossibility of wholesome fun in a safecontext. The organization is currentlyhosting activities at Bela Bela’s SunfaStadium from 10:00 to 14:00 everySaturday at Bela Bela’s SunfaStadium.Some of the activities include sports

clubs and other games which channelthe children’s energy into constructivegroup activities.The group also practices traditional

games, cultural dances and songs,storytelling by elders, toys, libraries andhomework supervision. There is alsotuition available for individuals andgroups, as well as group and individualdiscussions on teenage pregnancy,substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.
