VACUUM EXCAVATOR
Vacuum excavation is an intrinsically safe method of
avoiding dangerous and expensive utility strikes.
In line with HSG47 industry best practice, the method
eliminates the threat from buried services, whether it be
checking known services or pre‐drilling at borehole
positions.
The Hydro Vac technique uses a high pressure water jet to
break up the ground safely. The water jet is very effective
at penetrating all ground types including cohesive soils,
but is not aggressive enough to damage any services that
may be present. The slurry waste from disintegrated
ground is removed via the high performance vacuum, held
in the on board storage tank, then safely disposed of.
The pneumatic method suits all non‐cohesive ground
types and does not harm services that could possibly be
present. This technique leaves a dry material which can
easily be put back into the ground.
The Vacuum Excavation method is ideally suited to petrol
forecourt and other high risk site operations, where
service avoidance safety is paramount.
On a typical contract, our highly trained operators would
attend site with the vacuum unit and a stand‐alone
concrete core unit.
Once service information has been checked and the
position of known services established, the surface hard‐
standing can be cored to the appropriate diameter at each
position. The vacuum unit can then be used to excavate
pits to the required depth at each location.
Having ensured that the positions are free of services, the
pits are then backfilled with gravel or temporary tubing
with a concrete cap to make them safe. Our Pioneer
drilling rigs can then extend the boreholes to the required
depth.
Our highly skilled crews have undergone all the required
training for a majority of operations including;
CSCS, SPA, National Grid, Street Works
BESC, CAT+, RD4000

RESTRICTED ACCESS PIONEER RIG
To complement our fleet of pioneer rigs we have developed
a specialist, low headroom, narrow tracked machine for
those difficult to access borehole locations.
Still maintaining the Pioneer’s impressive drilling
capabilities, the low headroom machine sits a mere 2.5m
high while in standard drilling position. It can be reduced in
height to as little as 2m, without its winch. The tracks can
be retracted to 0.9m tracking width. It can access spaces
that most rotary rigs would be unable to enter.
The rig is mobilised on a ‘flat‐bed’ truck and a support
vehicle carries all the equipment required for the drilling,
including installation materials.
The Restricted Access Pioneer is capable of:
• Dynamic sampling of soils to 20m deep, to
obtain near‐undisturbed, continuous samples up to
112mm diameter retained in a plastic liner, forming
boreholes of up to 143mm diameter.
• Capable of internal operations using a
dedicated fume extraction system.
• Rotary core drilling to 50m deep to obtain
continuous rock cores of up to 112mm
diameter, using a range of drilling flushes.
• Concrete coring.
• Capable of undertaking SPT tests.
• Undisturbed soil sampling of 100mm and 70mm
diameter.
• Forming boreholes for a variety of ground
remediation techniques.
• Installing standpipes, monitoring wells, biaxial
inclinometer tubing, and various other
instruments.
