Dog project members were treated to a talk and demonstration about law enforcement K9s. Officer David Presley , Cpl. Troy Wal-ter and Officer Leo visited us October 15th at our meeting in Pleasanton River Park. We learned about the superior senses that dogs use to help us in the areas of search and rescue and drug sniffing, how to become a K9 handler and how they select and train dogs. Officer Leo performed a drug sniffing demonstration, finding a hidden cotton ball that had been scented with drugs. Pic-tured from l to r are, in back Tyler McDonald, Mary Jo Paschall, Chloe Jackson, Officer Presley, Rhetta Roberts, Michelle Pfeil, Coy Aldrich, Luke Robertson, Seth Robertson, Austin Stafford, Jayden Ogg, Cpl. Walter and Officer Leo. In front, l to r are Rayven Wil-son, Emily Dominguez, and Mattie Wright.
Dog Project News
Agriculture Fair for 4th Grade
The Agriculture Fair for all Atascosa 4th graders was a great success. They learned how
cotton was ginned, how cows are milked, the things cattle give us beside beef, Travis
Bonner was there as a Livestock Ambassador, Ethan Ayala and Yancey Miller spoke
about the Quail and Duck Brigades, a herpetologist had every snake native to Texas to
show them, they learned about electricity, soil conservation, and water conservation.
We had quite a few 4-Hers and their parents helping the Extension Office Staff keep
everything running smoothly, and the Texas Extension ladies provided us with yum-
mies.
Thanks go out to TEEA and all of those who helped. Special thanks to the following 4-H
members and their parents: Retta, & Rori, Roberts
and their mother, Chloe, Lydia, and
Bennett Jackson, and their mother,
Luke Robertson and his mother,
Jodie Sheerer and Tasha Meyer.
Pictured on the right are Luke Rob-
ertson and Jodie Shearrer messing
with a snake during clean up and on
the left are Ethan Ayala and Yancey
Miller promoting the Brigades. The

Youth Day at S.A.L.E.
Hosted by the School Tours Committee of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Youth Day is an entire day during the San Anto-nio Rodeo dedicated to Youth! During this day, 4-H, FFA, & FCCLA members from across Texas gather together to showcase their organizations, activities, & project work. These members set up exhibits and interactive activity booths for young visitors attend-ing the Stock Show & Rodeo. Children are treated to arts and crafts, games, demonstrations, sweet treats, and educational activ-ities. All the fun of Youth Day is included with your rodeo or grounds ticket.
The School Tours Committee also hosts a photography contest as part of the Youth Day activities. Entries from the contest are on display in the School Tours tent located in Family Fair from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm. The Photography Contest Awards Ceremony will be held in the School Tours tent also.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Extension Office.
The District 12 4-H Food Challenge is unique opportunity for a
team of 4-H members to put their knowledge and skills in
foods, nutrition, safe food handling, teamwork, and public
speaking to work. This relatively new event mimics some of
the “Iron Chef” concepts while soliciting application of those
skills 4-H works to develop in its members. For more infor-
mation (agenda, rules and what’s allowed in the supply box)

Orion Spacecraft Essay Contest
NASA's Summer of Innovation is partnered with the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program and the Texas A&M University Depart-ment of Geology and Geophysics to bring Texas student essay winners to Johnson Space Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8, for 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) 2014.
Thirty Texas students were selected as winners from the Texas 4-H essay contest to visit Johnson. Students answered questions about aerospace exploration, rocketry and NASA's new deep space exploration spacecraft, Orion, which is set to make its first test flight in December. The 4.5-hour uncrewed flight will take Orion 3,600 miles above Earth – farther than any spacecraft built for humans has been in more than 40 years.
During the visit, the students and 4-H representatives had the opportunity to meet with NASA scientists and engineers, take guided tours of the center, as well as build their own "Rockets to the Rescue" rocket with NASA Education Specialists, then launch them with the NASA Houston Rocket Club.
