DreamSpark for Institutions FAQ for Customers
Overview and Customer Benefits
1. What is DreamSpark? Microsoft DreamSpark provides no-cost access to Microsoft designer and development tools for verified students and
educators around the world, to support and advance their learning and skills through technical design, technology, math,
science and engineering activities. Academic subscription volume licensing customers receive an online subscription to
DreamSpark Standard at no additional cost for instructional use by their teachers and students organization-wide in their
classrooms and labs. In addition, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) departments in higher education
institutions may qualify for one online DreamSpark Premium subscription per institution at no additional cost as a benefit
of their Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) or Open Value Subscription – Education Solutions (OVS-ES). For a listing
of the type of coursework that qualifies as Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, please see the table later in this
document.
2. What are the benefits of the DreamSpark program? Much more than a software subscription, membership includes:
DreamSpark software subscription that includes Microsoft platform, server and developer tools software as well
as betas, new releases and tech support.
Special license rights allowing an organization or department to install DreamSpark software on any number of
departmental lab machines for instructional and research purposes.
The ability for students taking at least one credit course offered by the member organization or department to
install the software on their personal machines for use in coursework and personal development projects.
Instant online access to all DreamSpark content.
No-charge access to Electronic License Management System (ELMS) for automated distribution of software and
product keys to eligible users via the Web.
The ability for students or faculty to make one backup copy of the software on their own device solely for use as
a backup.
3. Where is Microsoft DreamSpark currently available? Microsoft DreamSpark is available worldwide. If it’s not available in your country, please visit DreamSpark.com for more
information about how to get your school set up.
4. Why is DreamSpark being offered to Academic VL Subscription customers? Microsoft believes in the power of technology to transform education, foster local innovation and enable jobs and
economic growth for everyone. Microsoft DreamSpark is just another way of helping this next generation of young leaders
seize the opportunity to harness the transformative magic of software. By offering DreamSpark with a VL subscription
agreement, we provide customers with a cost-effective way to get all of Microsoft’s productivity, collaboration, and
developer tools under a single agreement.
5. How does this benefit my students? With the DreamSpark Membership, your students get the professional-level developer and designer tools they would use
to build real sites, apps, and games for Xbox Live®/360®, Kinect™, Microsoft Windows® Phone, and more. Students get a
head start on a career, or do better in class. Tomorrow’s tech superstars can be found in dorm rooms and in Microsoft
tech clubs on campuses around the world. They will create thousands of next-gen apps, tools, and games. That’s why
we’re giving students and institutions the top development and design tools, including Visual Studio Professional, to be
used for instructional use at no charge.
6. My institution has an academic VL agreement. How do I take advantage of the online subscription of DreamSpark Standard?
New customers signing any of our academic VL subscription agreements will receive information about how to activate
their online subscription of DreamSpark Standard in their volume licensing program welcome letter. They can enroll in the
DreamSpark Standard using the DreamSpark Standard promo code provided in the welcome letter, together with their VL
agreement number, by going to http://www.DreamSpark.com/Institution/Subscription.aspx and following the instructions
on “Step 3. Enroll”. The promo code will re-set the price of the subscription to $0. The customer will then receive a
DreamSpark welcome email with information about how to activate their DreamSpark benefits through the MSDN
Subscription Portal, including the Electronic License Management System (ELMS) benefit. Existing subscription customers
have received notification about DreamSpark and information about how to transition from their current MSDNAA
membership to a new DreamSpark membership at their next renewal. There is no impact to their existing membership. For
any questions about your existing subscription or this transition, please contact:
http://www.DreamSpark.com/Institution/Support.aspx.
7. How do my STEM departments take advantage of an online subscription of DreamSpark Premium?
One STEM department of the academic institution covered with an academic VL subscription agreement is eligible to
receive a subscription to DreamSpark Premium at no additional cost. If you believe your department is eligible, you can
use the DreamSpark Premium promo code included in the volume licensing program welcome letter. If your academic VL
subscription agreement covers multiple institutions, each institution can enroll 1 eligible STEM department in DreamSpark
Premium. The STEM department can use the DreamSpark Premium promo code together with the volume licensing
agreement number, and enroll by going to http://www.DreamSpark.com/Institution/Subscription.aspx and following the
instructions on “Step 3. Enroll”. It is important that the person that will manage software access for DreamSpark enrolls in
the DreamSpark subscription. This person does not have to be an IT administrator, it can be a professor, an assistant
professor or anybody willing to take on the role of providing software access to students, faculty and labs. The promo
code will re-set the price of the subscription to $0. The customer will then receive a DreamSpark welcome email with
information about how to activate their DreamSpark benefits through the MSDN Subscription Portal, including the
Electronic License Management System (ELMS) benefit.
8. What happened to Developer AA? Developer AA isn’t gone—it’s simply been renamed to DreamSpark Premium. All of the titles that were previously available
through Developer AA are still available. If you currently have a Developer AA subscription through MSDNAA, you can
continue to access software titles as you did before.
9. What happened to Designer AA? Helping students who want to be designers is critical, but we wanted to find a way to make this easier for institutions, so
we have changed up the program. Instead of Designer AA membership, institutions can get a new DreamSpark Standard
membership that gives them access to all of Microsoft’s development and designer tools. If your institution currently has a
Designer AA membership, you can continue to enjoy those benefits until your membership expires. When it’s time for you
to renew, you will be transitioned to a new DreamSpark Standard membership.
10. What happened to High School AA? If your school currently has a High School AA membership, you can continue to enjoy those benefits until your
membership expires. When it’s time for you to renew, you will be transitioned to a new DreamSpark Standard
membership.

Use Rights
13. What are the allowed uses of DreamSpark subscription software? Software acquired through the DreamSpark subscription may be used by your institution’s students, faculty, or staff:
to develop, support, conduct, or take courses, labs, or programs offered by the institution
in non-commercial research on behalf of the institution
or to design, develop, test, and demonstrate software programs for the above purposes
14. What are the restrictions on use of the software? DreamSpark software may not be used for commercial purposes or to develop or maintain the institution’s own
administrative or IT systems.
15. What are the restrictions around the use of the Windows client operating system license available through DreamSpark Premium?
The subscription’s administrator of the member department may install Windows Client only on computers within the
Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) lab(s) of the STEM department that is the licensee under this
program even if these computers do not already have a Windows client operating system installed on it, only if (i) the
computers are owned by or leased to the STEM department, (ii) the computers will at all times remain physically located in
the STEM lab(s) of the STEM department that is the licensee under the DreamSpark license agreement, (iii) the products
are used to support STEM learning, teaching and research relating to Microsoft technologies, and (iv) are not used for
general purpose activities as web browsing or email access or non-STEM activities. If the use of the Windows operating
system products included with the DreamSpark Premium Subscription will be used in any other way, a valid Certificate of
Authenticity (COA) for a Windows operating system must first be affixed to the computer(s) on which the products are
installed. Individual students and faculty of the member Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
department may not install Windows client software on their personal computer if this computer is not already licensed to
run a full version of a Windows client operating system on it, as evidenced by a valid Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for a
Windows operating system affixed to the computer.
16. Can students continue using the software upon graduation? The institution must stop providing DreamSpark subscription benefits to students, faculty, or staff when they cease being
eligible, per the use rights. However, students who have received software under the DreamSpark subscription may
continue to use the software when they are no longer students (either upon graduation or leaving the school) provided
they do so in accordance with the use rights, i.e. for non-commercial purposes.
17. Where can I obtain the complete use rights? For complete terms and conditions, please visit http://www.DreamSpark.com/Institution/Subscription.aspx to access the
DreamSpark Standard EULA or the DreamSpark Premium EULA. You can also refer to the DreamSpark Standard Usage
Guidelines or the DreamSpark Premium Usage Guidelines.
18. How can academic institutions deploy software to their students and faculty and outfit their labs once they enroll in a DreamSpark subscription?
For detailed information about the different options to deploy software to students, faculty and labs, refer to the Software
Deployment Guide.
