President’s Message
Welcome to the 2011 Drayton Summer Fair. This year marks our 155th Fair. This year’s theme is ‘FARMING THROUGH THE YEARS’.
We have a full line up of events including livestock shows, midway attractions and displays. Farm play area and agricultural awareness for children of all ages! The truck and tractors pulls and demolition derby are always a favorite. New this year, is an Arm Wrestling Competition.
I would like to thank our endless list of volunteers that help with all the activities. We have numerous advertisers and sponsors in our book, so please support them. The board of Directors and myself welcome you all to the Drayton Fair.
Jim Driscoll, President
Mayor’s Message
On behalf of Mapleton Township Council, I would like to welcome everyone to our community and to the 155th Drayton Fair.
This annual rural tradition, dating back to 1856, has provided the opportunity for local residents to demonstrate their agricultural, culinary and artistic talents in a friendly, competitive atmosphere. It has now grown into a weekend of competi-tion, fun and entertainment for the entire family’s enjoyment.
I would also like to extend Council’s appreciation to all of the community volun-teers who work so diligently with the Drayton Mapleton Agricultural Society to make the Drayton Fair an annual success.
We hope you will join us at the “fair grounds” for this year’s annual event.

Ambassador of the Fair MessageBeing an Ambassador this past year has made for one of the best experiences of my life. This opportunity brings you closer not only to those in your community, but allows youto make friendships that will last a lifetime.
After travelling to the District Seven meetings and the Ontario Association ofAgricultural Societies convention in Toronto I have met so many representativesand ambassadors from societies all over the province I am sure to be close withfor years to come.
I would like to thank the Drayton Mapleton Agricultural Society, SheldaMorphy in particular for being a fabulous ambassador director, for keepingthis competition going and allowing me this wonderful year. With the CNEahead and my stint as ambassador coming to a close, I can only encouragethe youth of this community to participate in future fairs and ambassadorcompetitions.
This is not merely a one time, soon to be forgotten event. The memories will bewith me for undoubtedly years after the sash is passed. Your hometown speaks towho we are, so why not become involved with your community?

SeptemberBy Helen Hunt Jackson
The Goldenrod is yellow; The corn is turning brown; The trees in apple orchards With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes Are curling in the sun; In dusky pods the milkweed Its hidden silk has spun.
The sedges flaunt their harvest In every meadow-nook; And asters by the brookside Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning The grape’s sweet odors rise; At noon the roads a flutter With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer’s best of weather, And autumn’s best of cheer

GRADE 25. PRINT the following on lined paper:
Summer Eveningby Walter De La Mare
The sandy cat by the Farmer’s chair Mews at his knee for dainty fare; Old Rover in his moss-greened house Mumbles a bone, and barks at a mouse. In the dewy fields the cattle lie Chewing the cud ‘neath a fading sky; Dobbin at manger pulls his hay: Gone is another summer’s day. GRADE 36. WRITE, in cursive, the following on lined paper:
from If You’re Not From the Prairieby David Bouchard
If you’re not from the prairie, You’ve not heard the grass, You’ve never heard grass.
In strong summer winds, the grains and grass bend And sway to a dance that seems never to end. It whispers its secrets – they tell of this land And the rhythm of life played by nature’s own hand. If you’re not from the prairie, You’ve never heard grass.
GRADE 47. WRITE the following on lined, 3-ringed binder paper:
The Cow in Apple Timeby Robert Frost
Something inspires the only cow of late To make no more of a wall than an open gate, And think no more of wall-builders than fools. Her face is flecked with pomace and she drools A cider syrup. Having tasted fruit, She scorns a pasture withering to the root. She runs from tree to tree where lie and sweeten The windfalls spiked with stubble and worm-eaten. She leaves them bitten when she has to fly. She bellows on a knoll against the sky. Her udder shrivels and the milk goes dry.
GRADES 5 AND 68. WRITE the following with pen, on lined, 3-ringed binder paper:
All Through the ‘Thirtiesby Roy Daniells
All through the ‘thirties, south of Saskatoon, A farmer farmed a farm without a crop. Dust filled the air, the lamp was lit at noon, And never blade of wheat that formed a top. One New Year’s to the hired man he said, “I have no money. You must take the deeds. And I will be the hired man instead, To shovel snow and fork the tumbleweeds.” So it was done. And when the next year came, “Take back your farm,” the other had to say. And year by year, alternate, just the same Till the War came and took them both away. With such superb resource and self-possession Canada made it through the long depression.
GRADES 7 AND 89. WRITE the following with pen, on lined, 3-ringed binder paper:
from The Old Farm Woman Examines Her Thoughts
by Grace Butcher
What comes through now is the quarrel and twitter of guinea hens, the sudden noise and muttering of the white ducks, the sawing apart of the air by the roosters.
From the warm dark of the barn comes the velvety nicker of the old horse; the cats tease and twist around my legs.
I have become a good herder of chickens. If they do not head for the coop by dusk, I walk behind them quietly and skillfully and move them towards sleep.
Powerfully I climb the vertical ladder to the hayloft, toss the sweet hay easily through the small opening. The cats dash between my footsteps, but my feet go always to the right spot.
