HEAD LICE Head Lice have been detected in a number of classes. Would you please check your child’s hair and treat with the appropriate treatment if you detect lice or eggs. Students should not return to school unless this treatment has been administered. We recommend that students with long hair keep it tied back.

CANTEEN NEWS Word Up, Word Up, Word Up, The Apple slinky machines are still a big hit and with help from Andy and Eric at Fullers Fresh. We have been able to lower the price of the apples in the canteen from $1.50 to 50 cents. So, parents keep those apples coming in your children’s lunch boxes and even if you forget your apple we have got you covered at a reasonable price, the looks of amazement on the kids’ faces as they get their apple slinkied are priceless. Another positive we have also been in discussion with Daniella and Rick at The Swiss Patisserie with whom we are working with to supply us Pies, Sausage rolls and Bread daily come term 3. The pies will be our own “Bellingen Public School Pies” which will be made especially for the school, Wow! I’m sure you all would agree that it’s amazing that local businesses within our community are willing to go to these measures to enhance the wellbeing of our School Community members. A big thank you to everyone willing to join us on this exiting journey. We are still offering a healthy “Recess Pack” which contains Natural yoghurt cup with berries, A Protein Ball and Cheese and G.F. crackers or Vegetable sticks and Hummus Dip for $3.20 available daily and to all this. Our weekly special available from Tuesday through Friday is Spaghetti and Meatballs made with premium lean mince from Valley Quality Meats, rosemary and perennial basil form the garden, fresh tomato sauce made in the canteen and parmesan cheese for $4.50. 10-4 everyone. Matt Knight, Canteen Supervisor

HAND, FOOD & MOUTH DISEASE A student from Bellingen Public School was recently diagnosed with Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD). Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is a mild illness caused by the coxsackievirus. It is not a serious illness and has nothing to do with the animal disease foot and mouth. Symptoms Generally a mild illness caused by a virus, perhaps with a fever, blisters around the mouth, on the hands and feet, and perhaps the nappy area in babies. School or home? Keep home from school until all blisters have dried. How can I help prevent spread? Careful hand washing, especially after wiping the nose and using the toilet, and respiratory etiquette (covering a cough or sneeze and disposing of tissues in a rubbish bin). If you see any of the above symptoms please consult your doctor and advise the school accordingly:- We appreciate your co-operation with this matter.

REQUESTS FOR DONATIONS FOR THE LIBRARY COSY ROOM Things are progressing with the library refurbishment. We are turning the Fiction area into a much cosier space for the children to be in and we need your help to create this space.

We are looking for GOOD QUALITY donations of the following: Cushions (up to 15) which have covers that can be

removed and washed A container to put the cushions in at the end of the

day (for easy vacuuming) Large mozzie net to hang from the ceiling to create

a cubby/tee pee type of feel Bean bags (between 4-6) where the covers can be

removed and washed A large round, colourful, clean carpet/rug Low, round coffee type of tables (2) – may be made

to order or someone able to use recycled materials.

Skilled people we need are: Crafty people to assist with ideas and creations. We

want to create a softer, cosy feeling in that space and need to cover parts of brick walls and hang fun and colourful things from the ceilings. We need some decorating ideas from those crafty people in our school community, or even if you know someone in the wider community who would be able to assist.

A cabinet maker or crafts person to build a fabulous new borrowing desk. We are working on obtaining some funds to pay for the materials of this, but the amount will be determined on costs and donations of time available.

We will also be asking students about their ideas and some could create and make things for the library if they are interested. If you know anyone in the wider community who may be able to assist with any of these aspects, please call Louise Hensby on 0402 564 206 or Carole McFaul in the School Library. THINKING SKILLS Each day, think about and even record three things that you feel grateful for - things that make you happy. They could be happy events that happened that day like fun game at school, or special people in your life, something you did that you are proud of, a pet, whatever brings you a feeling of gratitude. You might even consider starting your own gratitude journal and add to it each day. Note to parents about gratitude practice. Children can benefit from being encouraged to take a moment to pause and reflect on what went well that day and some things that make them happy. This practice is a way to nourish well-being, contentment and inner peace (Hanson, 2009).

Denise Head (RFF Thinking Skills) LIBRARY DECORATION Thank you to those who have donated items so far. We now have enough mosquito nets but are in need of cushions and bean bags please. Also any other items that would help us decorate the library space. Carole McFaul, Librarian

ETHICS TRAINING Dear Parents and Carers, We are seeking volunteers so that ethics classes are available for all families who have requested them. Could you be an ethics teacher for Bellingen Public School? Ethics classes take place at Bellingen Public School from 12:10 – 12:40 pm on Friday each week. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence. Children discuss topics such as:

- imagining how others feel - how do we treat living things? - fairness - what is laziness? - how do we disagree in a respectful way?
