From The Mouths of Grandchildren!By Prem [email protected]

“Grandparents don’t have to doany thing but be there when we goto see them. They are fun to be withas they have lots of quarters for uswhen we go shopping with them.” An8 year old boy.

From Judy Chalk: “Last springwhen our five year old grandson,Andrew, was visiting us we went to our condo swimmingpool. We are often the only people there so I told Drew wewould take him to “our private pool. We had the pool toourselves for quite some time and then 3 or 4 others joinedus. Drew looked at them and then said to me in his outsidevoice, “Bam, if this is your private pool, how come all theseother people have come in?”

He answered quiteemphatically, “No, never. Notnow, not later, not ever!”

Scientific Wellness TrendsWhat do you know about antioxidants? As I watch the volumes of commercials, infomercials, etc. on TV, one of the most widelyused (or misused?) words I hear is “antioxidants.” We know they’re good for us, butwhat the heck are they and why should we consume foods or supplements rich in them?

In a nutshell, antioxidants gobble up the bad guys in our bodies that are key in the agingand disease process. Just as the paint on your car will dull and breakdown (oxidize) if leftout in the elements and not protected, that’s what happens to our bodies.

Below is an excerpt from a Houston Chronicle article on a ground breaking study thatwas recently published in Radiation Research. Why is radiation important in an antioxidantconversation? Because radiation causes oxidation in our bodies. There is industrialradiation, radiation emitted from medical and office equipment, the sun and cell phones. It’s a long list of sources. Limiting exposure is great, but can the effects of radiationand oxidation be reversed? New science says the answer is yes! Read on......

HOUSTON, TX: May 25, 2011University of Pittsburgh animal study published in theRadiation Research Journal showed diet of nutritionalsupplement developed for Astronauts strong againsteffects of radiation exposure.

A study commissioned by NASA and the JohnsonSpace Center (JSC) evidencing the benefits of nutritionalsupplementation under the harshest of environmentaloxidative stress factors, radiation, will be published in theJune edition of the Radiation Research Journal. Universityof Pittsburgh labs conducted the study which showed thatthe antioxidative properties of nutritional supplementformulas co-developed by NASA/JSC and Houston-basedAmeriSciences, LP, for the astronaut corps increased thelifespan and lessened the negative health effects inconditionally surviving animal subjects who were givena lethal dose of radiation.

Using a combination of a multivitamin and antioxidantformula (known as the AmeriSciences/NASA PremiumMultivitamin and the AmeriSciences/NASA Fruit andVeggie Antioxidant Formulas), this study was designedto test the long-term survivability and effects in micesubjects given high doses of ionizing radiation (9500mGy). The groups supplemented with a diet of themultivitamin and antioxidant formulas who survived for30 days or longer after exposure had an 80% survival rateat 250 days compared to 30% for the control group aswell as lessened late effects of the radiation exposure.

“The significance of the University of Pittsburghoutcomes cannot be understated,” explains CarlosMontesinos, AmeriSciences Director of Scientific andRegulatory Affairs. “This study proves the effectivenessof a properly formulated antioxidant and multivitaminnutritional supplement in protecting the body fromenvironmental conditions that contribute to negative healthconditions and early aging,” adds Montesinos, “everyonecan benefit from the knowledge of results like this.”

“Every day we are subject to environmental factorssuch as radiation that are considered oxidative stressorsthat can damage our cells,” states Barry Cocheu, President/CEO of AmeriSciences. “This has been linked to suchphysical conditions as cataracts, cancer, cardiovasculardisease and cognitive impairment – accordingly we allneed to consider the possible benefits of adding the rightnutritional supplement to our daily regimen.”

The outcomes of this study are yet another successstory in a line of nutritional technology advancements born

from the research partnership between NASA/JSC andAmeriSciences started six years ago with the signing of aSpace Act Agreement. In 2005, AmeriSciences andNASA/JSC entered into a Space Act Agreement to developnutritional supplements for the astronauts to meet the needsof long-duration spaceflight as well as conditioning hereon Earth. This joint research has now progressed to in-flight and clinical testing to determine the safety andeffectiveness of the resulting formulations. In 2009, theresulting AmeriSciences/NASA formulas were used andtested aboard the Space Shuttle and International SpaceStation (STS-125 and STS-127) with positive results.Human subject clinical testing of the formulas is currentlyin progress and plans are underway for future long-termtesting aboard the International Space Station.

AmeriSciences currently markets civilian formulasbased in part on this research and clinical data. They aremarketed as AS10 Life, AS10 and AS10 Fusion, availableat Good2Go Healthy Take Out in Ft. Myers, FL. For moreinformation go to FaceBook.com/Good2GoHealthy TakeOut. For more information on the radiation study, go to:http://www.radiationstudy.com/common/events/radiationstudy.pdf.

newly created Group Costume category. Ron also “netted”the Best Male Costume award. Plenty of creativity went intothe costumes this year as evidenced by Sue “Annie Oakley”Ribiero in her pink cowgirl get-up complete with six-shooters(Best Woman’s Costume winner), Elaine Kearney whodressed to the theme of “Throwing Caution To The Wind,”

along with Leprechaun MarilynDorcak and “Aye Aye” Pirate RayRhoton. “ Peace, Love and Tennis”was the theme of HP Director ofTennis, Mike Lawver and HeadPro, Carolyn Lawver, who “let thesun shine” throughout our twohours of doubles play. Plenty oforange and black tennis togs couldbe seen in the full field of playerswho stormed the courts for sixrounds of doubles play. ArtRamirez and Norma White earned bragging rights for theirsuccesses on the courts. Over forty players and guests thenadjourned to the Clubhouse for a delicious Sunday brunch. It’s possible we were the only costumed “brunchers” basedon the looks and laughs generated when the HPTA groupwalked into the dining room – we should have thought abouttrick or treating table to table!

continue to explore possibilities. (4) Several commentssuggested purchasing more land for course expansion. Thisland is also at a premium or non-existent and would requirecommunity approval for such a major expenditure whichwe feel would be unlikely to succeed.

******* From the Tennis Committee: Board Liaison Bob Ferry,Chairman Bob Smat

There were several comments as follows: (1) The firstcomment was that the members would like tennis clinicsavailable to members who are not in a league and thecommittee’s response is that tennis clinics have beenavailable for some time. Instructional clinics can be arrangedthrough the Tennis Pro shop and they span all skill levels.(2) One member asked that scheduled events be posted onthe HP website and would like to book courts online. TheTennis committee stated that the schedule of tennis eventsare posted online and at the tennis facility. A Chelsea typereservation system has been discussed by the committee anddetermined not to be of real value to the players. (3) Therewere two comments having to do with tennis players payingfor court time. The committee would like to point out thattennis is an amenity available to all members. No chargesare required for any amenity including aerobics, fitness, pools, golf or tennis at HP. Cost incurred for any amenitycomes from master association assessments. Your TennisCommittee thanks the members who responded and madecomments in the survey.

*******From the House Committee: Board Liaison andChairperson Kathy Haan.

Your House Committee has responsibility for makingrecommendations regarding food and beverage service bothat the Clubhouse and Tiki bar. As you may recall, when thegeneral survey was conducted in December and January, the new enlarged Tiki bar had been in operation only a shorttime so later in the spring of 2011, the House committeeconducted a second survey to assess the member opinionsof this new facility and obtain more detail on food andbeverage issues. The committee has reviewed the results ofthe 14 survey questions and the 58 comments from thegeneral survey and the 46 questions and 41 comments fromthe follow-up survey in the spring. The main concerns forthe Clubhouse were hours of operation, menu selection, andvalue of food. For the Tiki bar, the concerns centered onparking and staffing at the lodge and Tiki bar, addinghealthier menu choices, and unreliable hours of operation atthe Tiki bar as well as the Clubhouse. A number have beenaddressed and others are in various stages of development. While there was strong support for both the Clubhouse andTiki bar operations, there were many suggestions forimprovements and your House committee will continue toanalyze and review member input and will give responsesin future issues of Between The Palms and our website.

Update On All Owners 2011 SurveyGreen, Tennis andHouse CommitteesBy Dick [email protected], Communications Committee

In the February issue of Between The Palms, acomprehensive summary of the All Owners Survey wasoutlined and contained a commitment from the Master Boardof Directors to follow up and review the many commentsyou provided in the survey. These comments ranged fromcomplimentary to suggestions on how to make the Club abetter Club, both in the short term and looking ahead for thenext few years. All Board Committees, Club managementand indeed the Board itself, regarding some policy issues, are currently reviewing these comments. TheCommunications Committee reported their findings in theJune Between The Palms. Three more committees are nowreporting their findings to date.

From the Green Committee: Board Liaison BobFerry, Chairman Dennis Bonnette.

Your Green Committee thanks those members thatresponded to the survey. After reviewing 28 comments, wefind that the overwhelming majority of you like what hasbeen accomplished in the past and encourage us to continueto improve the golf experience in the future. There are a fewitems that could use further explanation. (1) The majority ofcomments relate to the continued improvement of the golfcourses. The next phase of improvement was completed thispast summer with the re-turfing of the Royal front nine. Theresults received find overwhelming approval. Pendingbudget approval, it is our plan to continue with the Royalback nine in 2012. Many other upgrades/improvements wereaccomplished this past summer such as paving the cart pathbetween #1 Royal green and #2 tee, eliminating a dusty ride. The retaining walls at #17 and #18 greens on Royal werereplaced. Seating benches have been added with more tocome. Plantings along Six Mile Cypress and between #7and #8 Royal were completed and are already providing avisual and noise barrier which will get better with maturationof the vegetation. (2) A number of you feel it is important tohave a putting green at the driving range. We have studiedthis upgrade, have proceeded with architectural drawingsand have submitted this project to the Board of Directors. The site would be located at the current small chipping/sandtrap area at the northeast end of the driving range. Withcompeting projects to deal with, the Board allowed thecommittee to choose between the putting green and re-planting the golf course fairways. The latter was chosen andthe first nine holes were completed this past summer. Theputting green is tabled at this time. (3) There is interest inimproving and expanding the practice facilities in general. We look at all the options regularly. Space is the biggestenemy. We have very little room to work with but will

Service Fee vs. GratuityBy Brian [email protected]

Do the servers in the restaurant get to keep all of theirtips? The answer is yes and no. There is an eighteen percent(18%) Service Fee added to each check inside the Clubhouserestaurant. The 18% does not go directly to your individualserver in the traditional sense. The Club collects the servicefee which is then used to supplement the staffs’ hourly wage. Our wait staff receives a higher hourly wage than the waitstaff in your typical neighborhood stand alone restaurant. The reason is our wait staff spends a great deal of time settingup and breaking down the dining room for multiple functions. In addition, a server may spend a great deal of time servicingone or two tables with a low check average while anotherserver is working a more active section of the dining room. Therefore, in equity, the service staff is paid a higher hourlywage to allow for time spent servicing meetings, movingroom furniture, setting up for parties and banquets, etc. Itwould not be fair to pay the typical server minimum wageof $3 - $4 an hour for the time spent performing theseimportant functions. So, the Club collects the service feeand redistributes the funds as an hourly wage. Each server is

then paid an hourly wage based on experience. Anotheradvantage is that our staff now has a set wage when applyingto rent or purchase a home or automobile. This method ofcompensation has proven very beneficial to both the Cluband staff.

If a member writes in an ‘added tip’ on the receipt, does that money go to the server? The answer is yes.Records are kept and each server is given the additionalgratuity amount in his pay check.

If a member leaves an extra cash gratuity with theircheck, does that money go to the server? The answer isyes. Any additional cash gratuity given to an individual server

Jackie & Angie met again at 50th reunion.

It’s A Small World

above the 18% service fee goes directly to that server.Of course, it is in your discretion to add a gratuity for

your server. It is not an expectation, but often times if aserver provides exceptional service, a customer will leavean additional gratuity.

The Lodge and Concession areas now operate exactlythe same as the Club as far as the 18% service fee, any addedgratuity or extra cash left for the server.

Please feel free to contact me anytime about this or anyother questions you may about the food and beveragedepartment. We are here too serve you and do our very bestto meet all of your culinary needs.

We’ve all had “small world” experiences – maybe youwent to a 50th class reunion and found out that a classmatespends winters in HP, just as you do, and you’ve never runinto each other. That’s what happened to HP residents JackieRamirez and Angie Holloway.

The ladies rekindled their friendship at their St. Anne’sSchool of Nursing’s 50th class reunion in Chicago, IL. Theywere sharing student memories and information about theirfamilies, but according to Jackie, “when they realized they

are both HP Snowbirds, it was priceless.”Angie participates in the ladies golf and she and Tom

were influenced to come here by Marilyn Dorcak and Tomand Sharon McGrath, all from the Chicago area. Jackie andArt, are both avid tennis players. Her cousins, Sharon andDennis Lewis introduced the Ramirez to Heritage Palms.

Inside The PalmsGeorge Loves His ViewBy Jeanne [email protected]

George and Shirley Biggs were among the early settlershere in Heritage Palms, and set the tone for those whofollowed. The Biggs bought their condo in April, 1998,before there even was a condo building. But George, whowas standing on the dusty plot of land where Terrace II wouldbe built, overlooking the lake, loved the view. And that sealedthe deal for him. They moved into their condo in January,1999, dodging dump and caterpillar trucks all the while. Theyimmediately became involved in the business of making thisa great place to live.

George became the first President of Terrace II, LakesideGreen Homeowners Association and served on the turnovercommittee. He quickly became the go-to-guy for all thesubsequent Homeowner Association Presidents, and was ona first name basis with the folks in the management company.George cares about HP. To this day he has never missedattending a HP Board Meeting and is still President of TerraceII at Lakeside Green. “From day one, we lived here yearround, so it was very important to us that we were involvedwith the activities and the direction of our community,” saysGeorge. “Rather than wait for someone else to do it, myselfand two other guys, started a golf group called The RoyalDuffers. I ran that for 13 years, now I am happy being oneof 16 guys in a group called Fun and Frolic. I was alsoinvolved with Bob Kelly and Art Carlson on the Golf and

Fitness Committee.”Shirley, along with Helen Nichols, started the Thursday

afternoon Bridge group that is still going at The Lodge.George and Shirley also belong to a couple’s bridge groupthat they started years ago. Shirley golfs with the Divas, andthey rarely miss an event at the Clubhouse and Lodge.

George, an avid Notre Dame fan, and Shirley are fromSouth Bend, Indiana and worked together in a Credit Unionbusiness that he owned, she on the administrative side andhe on the operations end. “We were able to work together

successfully for 18 years because her desk was on one endand mine on the othe,” says George. Shirley, who used to bea Patricia Stevens model, met George and they married onJanuary 18, 1958. They are celebrating their 54th anniversarythis year. Like many other families, they came to this areabecause they had friends or family nearby. While they werevisiting two of their closest friends who retired nearby, arealtor brought them to HP and they were sold. Shirley says,“I’ve never been sorry, the people we have met here are likefamily to us. Not having children, our friends are veryimportant to us. Both of us are cancer survivors and aregrateful for the support of our friends. It’s the people wholive here and the lifestyle that makes HP what it is. We wereone of the originals and are really just a typical couple. Welove the people, we love being involved, and we love thequality of our life here. For us, Heritage Palms was a perfectfit.” And George still loves his view.

The 2011-2012 Season is off toa great start. The Welcome Home/Halloween Party was a greatsuccess with over 260 inattendance. This was followed upby the Laughter Club’s ComedyNight and musical salute to thearmed forces attended by over 400 members. Additionallythe Men’s and Ladies Golf Associations are in full swingand the Men’s and Ladies Member Guests were greatsuccesses with our members proudly showing off their Club.

Next up is what is predicted to be another greatThanksgiving Celebration at the Club. Currently there areover 700 reservations on the books. Thanksgiving will befollowed by several Seasonal Holiday parties including thesecond annual Chanukah Celebration on Thursday December8th. Also, don’t forget to join your friends at the Clubhouseannual tree lighting ceremony at 6pm on December 4th.

On behalf of all of the staff at Heritage Palms, we wisheach and every one of you a joyous and happy holiday season.

Moving onto finances, one of the most important anddifficult to control revenue factors is Club collection ofannual dues. I am extremely happy to report that HeritagePalms delinquency rate is less than 1% in 2011. Currently,1650 members are paid in full with 12 currently past due. Abreakdown of the delinquencies is as follows: 5 units arepast due properties from 2009 to 2011 of which 3 of theseproperties are in foreclosure, 5 units are past due propertiesfrom 2010 and 2 units are past due properties for 2011only.This has led the Audit Committee to recommend loweringthe bad debt projections from $85,000 in 2011 to $50,000 in2012. Currently, the Club has reserved $257,479 for baddebt which adequately covers the Club’s exposure.

Re-sale activity in the community remains strong with atotal of 83 units sold year to date and 9 additional propertiespending re-sales. Re-sales are important to the vitality andvigor of the community and play an important part inmaintaining a vibrant community.

We experienced record rain fall in the month of October. Both courses were closed for three days in the busy secondhalf of the month due to wet conditions. The closuresunfortunately translated into the loss of at least 700 roundsof golf in what was heading to be a very good month ofrevenue.

In October, cart fees were under plan by $6,054.00($19,708.00 over plan YTD). Guest fees were over plan inOctober by $923.00 ($17,618.00 under plan YTD). PublicFees were under plan in October by $3,874.00 ($15,311.00under plan YTD). Reciprocal fees finished $3,347.00 underplan in October ($8,139.00 under plan YTD).

Merchandise sales were over plan in October by$1,659.00 ($38,126.00 over plan YTD). Payroll has remained

under budget YTD.The Sabal course received its final summer aeration and

opened on October 15th. Under normal conditions it takes 5– 6 weeks for greens to recuperate and reach 100%. The Sabalwas opened 4 weeks after aerating. Several days of heavyrain just three days after opening tremendously slowedrecuperative response of the greens. Ten days later more rainfell. All of this set the greens back almost two weeks. Thegreens are currently making progress and are beginning tolevel out and pick up speed. With continued light topdressingand frequent rolling, the greens will fully re-cooperate.

The Royal course remains in great condition without anymajor issues. Comments regarding wet areas in fairways androughs have been addressed. The recent rainfall has resultedin higher than normal water levels where water is holding indrain lines and basins. The water levels have been only 6”to 18” below soil levels for the past several weeks. Softconditions from summer aerations have magnified this issuewith recent rains, especially on the front nine of the Royal.Irrigating has been limited to greens, tees, and “hot spot”areas throughout the courses. Normal pumping totals for thistime of year average around 12 million gallons a week. Wehave been averaging 1 to 3 million gallons a week over thepast several weeks. We will continue to stake off and roll/tamp wet areas where carts have traveled and mark areas asground under repair.

Over seed of the tees will begin November 14th and becomplete by November 23rd barring any weather delays. The driving range was over seeded and top dressed onNovember 4th. Mats will be used until the seed begins togerminate. Palm trees will be trimmed beginning November15th. This process will take approximately two weeks tocomplete. Annual flowers will arrive November 14th andwill be planted by the 15th.

The month of October was busier than September in theFood and Beverage Department but due the number of daysthat were washed out due to rain sales did not meet plan forthe month. In addition to the aforementioned events SundayBrunch was also resumed in October. The revised brunchselections and the reduced price of $11.95 have been verywell received by the membership. A new lunch menu wasintroduced in October and also has been well received.Overall, revenues have been very solid in food and beveragewith approximately $1,200,000 in revenue year to date. TheTiki Bar has far exceeded expectations in use but has beenslightly more costly to operate than originally projected.

The Club remains in a very solid financial positionthrough the month of October. By design, the Club budgetis $0 based meaning planned revenues should equal plannedexpenses at year end. Though nine months of operationsand taking into account planned contingencies, it appears asthough the Club will meet this financial position at the endof the year.

Have a great 2011-2012 Season!

Tribute in the form of amusical video, and singing of military patriotic songs for each branch of the service wasplayed to honor all HP veterans in attendance. Dave Donaldson led the singing, accompaniedby Nancy Coates on the piano. Then it was time for comedian Ted Holum, who gave us alot to laugh about and then some.

There’s a statue at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preservein Cape Coral. It’s a copy of the five Marines and one Navycorpsman, who trudged the ash to the peak of MountSuribachi on Iwo Jima – and created the photograph thatbecame the symbol of WWII. The Capes monument is 1/3the size of the original, however the replica in the Cape hadbeen neglected and was about ready to fall down. After sixmonths of sand blasting, restriking and filling and fixing200 feet of cracks, the monuments repairs were completed.

The recent celebration of the restoration honored thosewho survived and those who paid the ultimate price on IwoJima. Invited Guest of the recent commemoration ceremonywas HP’s Ken Stone, whose generous contribution jump-started the repair work.

Ken, 86, was drafted into the Marines right out of highschool in October 1943. He remembers his service time as“26 months.”

Ken was voted into The Barber Hall of Fame and has acollection of figurines about his business.

Ken displays his purple heart.

He was living with his family in Toledo, Ohio and heleft Cleveland, Ohio on a train to San Diego for boot camp, then on to Camp Pendleton in Los Angeles for camouflagetraining and was then assigned to the Third Marine Division. He was a front line rifleman and headed off with his squadto the invasion of Guam, and then to the Battle of Iwo Jima.He was there on the 5th day of the battle when the flag wasraised. His squad was cutting across one of three air fieldsas they were making their way towards the action when theyspotted the American flag in the air. “We all applauded likemad and turned around and cheered,” he said. The battlecontinued for another 30 days, when the American troopssuccessfully captured the island, but at a heavy cost. TheBattle of Iwo Jima is the only time during WWII thatAmerican casualties actually outnumbered Japanesecasualties. During the 35 day battle there were 26,038

American casualties.Ken was one of the more fortunate casualties. He lived -

but he has few memories of his injuries. “I was sleeping andwoke up with a piercing pain in my leg.” He was evacuatedto a nearby Med Vac ending his time on Iwo Jima. He wasshipped to a hospital in Hawaii and eventually sent back tothe States.

After the war, Ken used his G.I. Bill to attend ToledoUniversity and was graduated with a degree in math

education. However he went into business, eventuallyowning 3 barber schools in Fort Myers.

The small container with sand from Iwo Jima, which hereceived at the ceremony in Cape Coral, sits on his bedroomdresser. It recalls mixed feelings for Ken. “I was proud toserve, but it brings back a lot of bad memories,” he explained. Those of us on the receiving end of his military serviceapplaud him with our hands and our hearts.
