Preliminary VS Final product

-Clear use of shot-reverse shot, showing clear over the shoulder shots of the conversation between both characters. Editing of these shots were done within the perfect time frame, allowing the conversation to look as if the character were talking to each other at the same time.-Piece portrayed different aspects of of the task set, such as match on action and sports and multi-camera action, in which the camera changes the viewers perspective of our character running up the stairs. By using this filming and editing technique, we were able to portray a live action view for our audience, adding to the fast pace of the opening scene.

Preliminary Investigation

Planning & Research To produce our thriller

we had to do planning and research the genre and our target audience.

It was vital that we did this before we began filming so that, we would know what areas we would have to focus on and how we would go about shooting the opening. After we drafted our idea we got feedback from our target audience to see how we could improve it and what they liked about it. If we did not do this then we would have been at risk of producing an opening that our audience would not be interested in or they would be disappointed. So improving upon our plan with the audience feedback in mind meant that we could figure out ways to add more suspense and give the audience more of a thrill, because originally the antagonist was meant to be shown in the opening and come into contact with the protagonist, but from our research we found that they audience would find the opening more intense if his face was not shown and him and the protagonist had no contact at all, and that is what we did. And by doing this , it made our final product more thrilling and left the audience intrigued.

These different shots are examples of how we were able to extend beyond the preliminary from match on action and shot reverese shot. As well as the use of titles and credits, because they were not used in our preliminary as the y were unnecessary, however for the opening they were vital because they are what makes it look like an opening instead of parts of a movie.

Leaning from the preliminary investigation to create a good final product

Having already completed the preliminary task , I personally think that my editing skills have improved. But in terms of using different shot types , I am to broaden the shots I use compared to being limited to only to for the preliminary task.

After doing the preliminary task I found that during the final product I would have to improve on the handling of camera (shaking etc) ,add titles and credits and using the 180 degree rule effectively to show all aspects of continuity editing. But, when filing the product I found that the camera was bad quality in the preliminary task because of the camera used, so when I filmed the final product my camera skills were much better because I was using better equipment.

The preliminary task focused on Match on action and the 180 degree rule, which I think I established well. So when it came to doing the final product, I could only improve my knowledge and skill to use different shots in my piece. Also , editing was more or less neglected when doing the preliminary so when it came to editing the final product I was taught new things that would most definitely increase my performance during the task and how crucial it was to the opening to make it look attractive and conform to its genre.

Unlike the preliminary task, our opening was allowed to have sound other than dialogue. Sound was used in our opening to intrigue the audience. The sound track is soft but yet sinister at different points and at each point intensifying the atmosphere.

Overall, I think our end product was extremely successful in fulfilling the task because we understood the difference between a horror and a thriller, which allowed us to produce an opening which conformed to the generic convention of the thriller genre. The conventions I think it most conformed to were.. Enigma ,cross-cutitng and music situated to the genre.

The conventions make the opening look successful because of how it reflects other thriller opening such as “The girl with a dragon tatoo”, where they both are full of suspense and the editing entices the audience which is what an opening should do because it is what captures the audience attention to want to carry on watching the film.

I was able to experiment with sound and editing tools and I learnt that it is very important that we used copyright FREE music for the product to be ours. Through the making of “C A P T U R E” I discovered what makes a good thriller opening and what attracts the target audience to want to watch it and view more of the film . To conclude, I have learnt a lot when it comes to conforming to a certain genre when making a product based on that genre specifically and how to create suspense and tension not only within the film but with the audience as well, and I did this through the different shots used in the film and through the music to create and intensify the atmosphere.

In conclusion…
