“You really do get back what you give. I’m energized to be a part of building something with the community that will benefit us all.”

Every day, Sunnybrook is here for patients and their families, when it matters most. Our donors are essential to making sure we will

continue to be here. For your support, we are extremely grateful – thank you.

This Report to Donors for 2005-06 is but a small sampling of the contribution that donors have made in the past year, many of whom have either experienced the care given here or are inspired by it.

We hope that we are able to convey how much a donation – at whatever level – can matter, and how much your support inspires us.

~ Dr. Sherry Cooper

Jeff and susan became parents to a beautiful baby boy named Jackson on March 10, 1994. Jackson got a head start on life and was

delivered 10 weeks premature, weighing a fragile two pounds. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) became Jackson’s home and a place of comfort for his parents during the first two and a half months of his life, providing round-the-clock, comprehensive and lifesaving care to Jackson. According to Susan, “The staff were amazing people and demonstrated an open style of caring. It’s terrifying having a sick child – you need a private space. The nurses helped us have privacy.”

In the summer of 1995, they hosted Jackson’s Rave – The Party for Preemies to demonstrate their gratitude and appreciation for the care Jackson received from the NICU. With the help of volunteers they organized a fundraising event that attracted more than 400 people to their backyard. Since then, Jackson’s Rave has evolved into a much-anticipated annual event, and in 2003 relocated to the Angus Glen Golf Club to accommodate the growing number of attendees.

Since 1995, Jackson’s Rave has raised more than $250,000 for the NICU – no small feat for a couple who initially wanted to show their appreciation by

throwing a small party to buy a rocking chair for nursing mothers. “It feels wonderful and I get a great deal of satisfaction from telling the story and the history of the event. It’s a great way of getting people engaged,” says Susan. Now a healthy and active 12-year-old, Jackson loves sports and video games and has yet to decide whether he wants

to be a paramedic or doctor when he grows up.

Jackson’s birth has led to an enduring and committed relationship with the NICU that has helped care for countless premature babies.Jeff and Susan are excited about the expansion of M-Wing on Bayview to accommodate the Perinatal & Gynaecology Program.“We’re committed to the Program and will continue to help by volunteering, joining a task force or parental

support groups,” says Jeff. “We will do what people ask us to do.” Jeff and Susan support Sunnybrook because it was there for them when they needed it most.

According to Jeff Church and Susan Shaw, the best way to celebrate the birth of your child is to throw a party

Our anonymous donor’s life was much like anyone else’s. Her career within information technology took her to Montreal, Vancouver

and Toronto. She was well-traveled, creating friendships around the world, and well-read. Her friends thought her smart, vivacious, knowledgeable about a host of things and curious about the world, in many ways the hub of her social circle. And when she was in her prime, she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

According to Dr. Linda Rabeneck, Cancer Program Chief at Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre (TSRCC) and expert in colorectal cancer,

“Fewer than 20 per cent of Ontarians 50 years and older are getting screened. If detected early, there is a greater than 90 per cent chance of cure. If caught late, there is a 10 per cent chance of cure.”

As is too often the case with this disease, for our donor there were few warning signs to indicate something was wrong. By the time the cancer was diagnosed, the disease was advanced. Our donor faced the disease squarely, as she had taken on other challenges in her life; she began treatment at TSRCC. She became determined to do whatever she could to prevent what happened to her from happening to her family and friends, some of whom she had known for more than 30 years. One of these friends, part of her “Group of Seven,” credits her with creating a ripple effect: encouraging the group to become educated about the disease and to get screened. In turn they encouraged others in the same way.

But our donor’s work didn’t stop there. When she was deciding what to do with her estate, she included a legacy gift to support colorectal cancer research at Sunnybrook. Now her generosity reaches and helps people she never met in her life. The ripples continue to spread.

“Screening for this disease is where the rubber meets the road. Supporting our colorectal cancer research helps us save lives. It is really that simple!” ~Dr. Linda Rabeneck

Peace of mind, when it matters most

Sunnybrook’s donors, and their reasons for donating, are as diverse as the health

services offered at the Hospital.

The Nanjis were born in Uganda, settling in Canada in 1972. The P. Nanji family will never forget how welcomed they felt by their newly adopted homeland and now they are giving back.

As generous Sunnybrook donors, they have provided funding that has significantly benefited the work done in both the Hospital’s Neurosciences and Trauma & Critical Care Programs.

“We have much to be thankful for, living in a country that provides so much opportunity to those who seek it,” said Pyarali Nanji, a proud member of Toronto’s Ismali community. “Canada was there when our family needed it. And one of the most distinguishing characteristics of this country is the health care that is provided. We wanted to make sure we shared our success with other Canadians.”

Along with helping to fund the expansion of the Emergency and Trauma Centre, the P. Nanji

family’s gifts to the Hospital have supported essential program needs in the Neurosciences department – specifically, dealing with mood disorders – such as important research ventures and Fellowships.

The researchers and clinicians of the Neurosciences Program integrate their studies to better understand both the mind and the brain. At the same time, they are working towards de-stigmatizing brain disorders such as mental and neurological illness.

Similar to the brain itself, the work of the Neurosciences Program at Sunnybrook can be a complex concept to understand. The brain

and nervous system control and interact with virtually every part of the human body. As a result, Neurosciences are an essential element to virtually all areas of the Hospital and the entire health care system.

“My passion is to help youth and adolescents who struggle with serious mood disorders that make every day life a challenge,” says Mr. Nanji. “The work of the Neurosciences Program is very important because it is dedicated to improving diagnosis and treatment of an entire span of disorders of the brain and the mind. We are honoured to be a part of such essential discovery.”

Being prepared, when it matters most

As a gl ob a l econom ic strategist, Executive Vice- President of BMO Financial

Group in Toronto, and the author of several studies looking at the financial impact of a global pandemic, Dr. Sherry Cooper knows the importance of being prepared for the unknown.

In 2005, when visiting Sunnybrook’s Emergency Department, Dr. Cooper witnessed first hand the unknowns that come through the Hospital’s doors on a continuous basis, keeping staff in a constant state of alert.

“It was fascinating to watch just how hard-working the care providers were under extremely difficult circumstances,” said Dr. Cooper. “So many patients were flooding in through the doors, and though you could see resources were stretched to the limit, these amazing professionals went diligently about their work.”

What Dr. Cooper saw was a relatively average night. Sunnybrook is home to one of Canada’s largest Emergency Departments, and the country’s

largest Trauma Centre. The number of admissions has grown steadily over the past 26 years. Now two of every three trauma cases in Ontario are received at Sunnybrook.

“Living in Toronto during the SARS outbreak of 2003, it was eye-opening to see the impact of a relatively small pandemic,”

said Dr. Cooper. “It just goes to show the importance of being prepared, especially for the health care system. If something happens in the future, there’s little doubt Sunnybrook will once again function as the ground zero for the city and even the province for handling cases.”

To keep up with the dramatic

increase in caseloads and make sure Sunnybrook is prepared for a mass trauma or crisis situation, construction has begun on a new Emergency & Trauma Centre that will double our capacity. The new Centre will accommodate our projected growth to more than 54,000 patients and their families in the years to come.

Donors like Dr. Cooper, who is also a valued member of the Sunnybrook Foundation Board, are making it happen, when it matters most.

“I was raised understanding the importance of philanthropy and giving back to the community,” said Dr. Cooper. “I have been blessed with abundance in my life, and saw an essential and rewarding opportunity to give back to Sunnybrook. You really do get back what you give. I’m energized to be a part of building something with the community that will benefit us all.”

Making a difference, when it matters most

In 2003, 20,000 Canadians were waiting for hip or knee replacement surgery. Having witnessed for himself the challenges faced by the health

care system as a result of the tremendous volume of patients – Bill Holland knew he had to act.

Bill and his wife, Susanne, decided to make a $20 million investment to support Sunnybrook’s Musculoskeletal Program – the largest single donation in the Hospital’s history. The Hollands’ visionary gift created the Holland Musculoskeletal Program at Sunnybrook and named the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre.

“Susanne and I believe this gift will have a major impact on wait times for joint replacements in Ontario and a significant and long-term impact on health care in this province and country,” said Mr. Holland. “We have the best orthopaedic physicians at Sunnybrook. Susanne and I want this gift to provide some of the resources necessary to keep our doctors in Toronto and attract and train the next generation of medical leaders.”

With demand for musculoskeletal care greater than ever before, the Holland Centre will take a leadership role in managing, preventing, educating and discovering new ways of delivering the highest quality care.

The funds provided by the Hollands will support several capital projects and educational and research initiatives at the Holland Centre that, when complete, will allow Sunnybrook to triple

the volume of surgical procedures.

“This is a critical juncture in the evolution of orthopaedic and arthritic care at Sunnybrook,” said Mr. Holland. “What happens here will impact the entire province and we want to make sure the Hospital is equipped to face the challenges ahead.” Sunnybrook’s Orthopaedic & Arthritic campus celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005 and the Hollands’ generous gift, along with the support of many donors, will ensure that the

Holland Centre is there for many more years, continuing to restore people’s independence, when it matters most.

Restoring independence, when it matters most

The 50th anniversary of the Orthopaedic & Arthritic Institute (OAI) was marked

by an evening of celebration, innovation and tribute on October 11th, 2005 at Le Meridien King Edward Hotel.

In 1955, Dr. C. Stewart Wright and his colleague Dr. James E. Bateman first established a private, 14-bed hospital, dedicated to the treatment of orthopaedic disease, in downtown Toronto. The facility paved the way for the most innovative clinical and surgical expertise, education and research in musculoskeletal care for patients across Canada.

The golden anniversary celebration honoured the co-founders and highlighted the achievements of the OAI. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the most signif icant and momentous gift in Sunnybrook’s history, Susanne and Bil l Holland’s $20 million gift in support of the OAI. In honour of their generosity, the facility

was renamed the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre.

Other announcements were made that evening and each have positively impacted the medical care of patients at the Centre. Dr. Hans Kreder was honoured as the inaugural holder of the Marvin Tile Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery. The endowment was made possible by the generous contributions of donors who supported the goals of the Hospital and wanted to recognize Dr. Tile, a long-time Sunnybrook physician with a remarkable international reputation.

The Holland Centre’s main lobby was named the Wright Family Atrium, in honour of the many gifts to the capital project made by members of the Wright family.

Today, the Holland Centre at Sunnybrook is a 97-bed facility and home to Canada’s largest team of musculoskeletal experts in orthopaedic surgery, rheumatology,

sports medicine, rehabilitation, nursing and other allied health care professions. The Holland Program serves as Canada’s premier centre in spinal care, for patients suffering from injuries, cancer or degenerative conditions.

Recently designated as a provincial Centre of Excellence for hips and knees, the Holland Centre will be able to serve more patients in the coming years, when it matters most.

We thank you for your support and look forward to many more years of innovative care from the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre

It matters most to a son, when his mom has breast cancer

Like cycling across the country on the Trans-Canada highway, the fight against

breast cancer has its peaks and valleys, days when the winds are at your back and days when the rain seems to never relent, and corners that reveal the good and the bad.

Ryan Richards knows personally what it’s like to face both challenges.

Ryan’s mother, Robbin, has spent more than 13 years fighting a courageous battle against breast cancer. As he watched his mother’s health improve and decline, Ryan decided he had to do something. He and his close friend, Shael, came up with the idea to bike across Canada in honour of his mother’s fight and the struggle of every woman who has suffered from breast cancer.

Two friends, Cyrus and Travis joined the team, and on May 5, 2005, the four of them dipped their wheels in the Pacific Ocean to signify the beginning of their 8,000 kilometre journey across Canada. By the time they dipped their wheels in the Atlantic, they had raised over $77,000.

“We prepared hard for the journey, but we aren’t really trained cyclists,” said Ryan. “We struggled the whole way but it was the least we could do to raise money for breast cancer research at Sunnybrook. Whenever we hit a rough patch I thought about my mom. She’s been fighting breast cancer forover 13 years and she’s still fighting; there was no way I could give up.”

Giving back to the Hospital runs in the family. Ryan’s dad, Dr. Robin Richards, Chief of Surgery at Sunnybrook, also made his own generous contribution to the Breast Cancer Research Centre at Sunnybrook.

“Our family has experienced the devastating impact of this disease that affects so many women and their loved ones, and how modern treatment can prolong survival and preserve quality of life,” said Dr. Richards. “Patients with breast cancer deserve a special facility for their care until a cure is found.”

Dr. Richards is proud of the accomplishments of his son and proud of the accomplishments of Sunnybrook.

“Sunnybrook brings people together – Robbin’s Ride is a good example of many agreeing that the Hospital deserves support. Supporting Sunnybrook is worth the effort. The Richards family has had much good fortune, and it is good to be able to give something back,” said Dr. Richards.

The ride, like the fight against breast cancer, continues...

At the ground-floor entrance to M-Wing at Sunnybrook you will find a sculpture

entitled La Famiglia by Mario Negri. The work, donated in 1997 by Gloria and Edmond Odette, speaks to Sunnybrook’s history of nurturing care but it also symbolizes their family’s support of the work done here. The Odette family’s commitment to Sunnybrook stretches through three generations and over 20 years.

Edmond Odette is known as a community leader and a quiet benefactor to education, the arts and health care. Honoured with the Order of Canada and several buildings that bear his name, Mr. Odette prefers to work behind the scenes. Mr. Odette has been a benefactor to many areas of the Hospital, with recent support to help endow the Marvin Tile Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery and fund the acquisition of our experimental PET-CT scanner, as just two examples of his commitment to improving patient care and research.

Most recently, Mr. Odette made a gift to the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) program in Vascular Surgery and specifically, the work done by Dr. Robert Maggisano on aortic aneurysms and tears. These aneurysms typically affect those over 60, and they are five times more likely to occur in men than women, developing over several

years without warning symptoms. Previously these aneurysms were viewed as inoperable in many high risk cases. Dr. Maggisano’s team at Sunnybrook has used Mr. Odette’s gift to fund the equipment needed to allow minimally invasive procedures.

One of Mr. Odette’s daughters, Anne Odette Kaye, supports the Hospital through her current work as a Director of the Sunnybrook Foundation Board and as Vice- Chair of the Foundation’s Governing Council. As Co-Chair of Sunnybrook’s Women’s Health Golf Classic, for the past two years, she has helped raise over $150,000to fund the construction of a digita l mammography room at the Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre.

The third generation of Odette family involvement is represented by Mr. Odette’s grandson, Andrew Kaye. As part of his volunteer commitment for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Andrew worked as a student helper at the Sunnybrook Crèche, our daycare program.

From father to daughter to grandson, the Odette family represents a tradition of service and support always responding and leading, when it matters most. When a gift of the heart

For power workers, treating electrical injury matters most

Every year, between 600-800 workplace electrical injuries occur in Canada. These injuries can have devastating effects – usually

permanent disability – on those injured, often with long-term toll on the victim’s neurological, musculoskeletal and other internal systems.

The recently funded Hydro One Chair in Electrical Injury will be at Sunnybrook’s Ross Tilley Burn Centre, a national leader in research and treatment of electrical injury. Hydro One, the province’s largest electricity delivery company, has provided a generous start-up contribution to the Chair.

“Safety is our number one priority at Hydro One and we work very hard to avoid these types of injuries,” said Tom Parkinson, President and CEO of Hydro One. “The proper care and treatment for electrical injury patients is important not only to those of us in the electrical industry, but will benefit workers in every sector.”

The Power Workers’ Union of Ontario has provided additional funding for the Chair. “The dedication, research and treatment that take place at Sunnybrook deserve all the support we are able to provide,” said Don MacKinnon, President of the Power Workers’ Union. “Certainly for workers in the electricity sector who had the misfortune to experience electrical injury, this facility provides the medical experience to ensure innovative treatment and quicker neurological and physical recovery.”

The key to treating these injuries is a comprehensive assessment, treatment and/or follow-up that can facilitate an earlier return to work or return of function. Early intervention, from a multi-disciplinary team approach to ensure an accurate assessment and plan of care, will minimize the chance of permanent disability and complications from electrical injury.

“This is the first hospital-based program in Canada that will be dedicated solely to studying the impact and treatment of electrical injury,” said Dr. Joel Fish of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre.

“This Chair represents a tremendous resource that will examine the medical complications of an electrical injury and will serve as an umbrella for burn centres across the country which currently operate in isolation.”

The Chair’s work will support a multidisciplinary team pursuing a comprehensive research, education and outreach program for electrical injury. It will also allow the Hospital to expand by 50 per cent its capacity to support burn patients overall, and specifically electrical burns, meeting an urgent patient care need, when it matters most.

Sunnybrook donors are here, when it matters most

Sunnybrook has always benefited from an exceptional base of donors and volunteers who give generously of their time and money when it

is needed most. Norman Bell is one such individual.

Norman, a retired securities broker, first became a part of the Sunnybrook family in 1966 when he was invited to join the Hospital’s Board of Trustees. He had a special affinity for Sunnybrook. As a soldier with the 48th Highlanders Regiment, who had recently returned from fighting following the end of World War II, Norman understood deeply the importance of having a hospital dedicated to the care of Canada’s veterans.

“From the very beginning, I remember the exceptional care that was offered to my fellow soldiers returning from overseas,” recalls Norman.

“Sunnybrook was, and remains today, a truly unique institution because of the top notch care offered here.”

Norman became Chair of the Board in 1972, and served in that role for a decade. Seeing that the Hospital’s research program needed to keep pace with other hospitals in the city, his first act as Chairman was to get the Board to establish a fund dedicated to Sunnybrook research initiatives.

He remembers every member stepping up to make a contribution of $1,000 or more, a significant gesture, especially at the time. That research fund now bears his name, The Norman Bell Trust for Medical Research, and today is valued at $25,000,000. These funds give Sunnybrook Research Institute the flexibility to invest money in the areas of health care that need it the most, benefiting all of the Hospital’s clinical priorities.

Norman remains an integral part of Sunnybrook as an active and generous donor, and as a recently appointed member of the Foundation’s Governing Council.

“I’m thri l led to be a part of Sunnybrook during this important period of growth, and as we move into the next phase of our evolution,” said Norman.

“It’s an evolution that has been happening since before I became a part of the Hospital in 1966, and its progression has been

made possible by the everlasting generosity of the Hospital’s supporters.”

“The Hospital’s strength is its dedicated people.” ~ Norman Bell

It matters most to train the next generation of health care providers

If you were lying sick in a hospital bed, who would you most want to come into the room? This is the basic criterion for the Golden

Stethoscope Award. Every year, up to five third-year medical students from Sunnybrook’s Peters-Boyd Academy receive the award; twenty-six students have received this award since 2001. “Who would you most want to come into your room?” is meant to describe someone with a special combination of academic excellence and humane and compassionate character, and who contributes to the healing of the patient, the family’s well-being, and the welfare of the hospital and the community.

The idea arose when Robert Burton watched his daughter, Jodie, now a fellow specializing in multiple sclerosis at a Toronto-area hospital, endure the difficulties every student must in applying for a residency. The challenge was emotionally wrenching and drawn out, with exacting forms and criteria and travel for interviews, and then the waiting and the hoping for a good match. This award, purposely presented to third-year students, provides an important credential that can make “the difference.” Jodie reports that the award is highly respected and highly regarded, is motivational for students, and has created a standard of excellence.

Last year Mr. Burton generously extended the Golden Stethoscope Award to the other Toronto teaching hospitals.

Robert Burton believes he is a lucky man. His parents arrived safely in Canada just before the outbreak of World War II and he has had success with career and family. More recently he underwent a serious, lengthy and successful operation for which he is profoundly grateful to everyone at Sunnybrook, from the internist who first assessed his problem to the surgeon and surgical team that operated, and to the staff doctors, nurses and even the patient service partners, who

– together – made it all work, and to all the follow-up care givers who ensured his complete recovery.

For Robert Burton, “passing it on” is an obligation. Every year he asks all the students at the awards reception to do their own “pass it on” as good people caring for friends and family, as good doctors caring for their patients, and as mentors and teachers for those who follow them.

Thanks to a husband’s birthday tribute to his wife, more of

our Veterans and long-term care patients will be able to enjoy the outdoors.

The Norman & Margaret Simpson Garden Pavilion, constructed on the second floor of the George Hees Wing of the Veterans Residence, came about through the generosity of Terrence J. O’Sullivan, Chair of the Board of Directors of Sunnybrook Foundation. The gift was made to celebrate the 50th birthday of his wife, Corey Simpson, and to honour her parents. Her father, Norman Simpson, was a decorated war veteran, while her mother, Margaret Simpson, enjoyed gardening; both were keenly interested in philanthropy. With these thoughts in mind, Mr. O’Sullivan and Ms Simpson were inspired to create something very special, and very meaningful.

Opened in the fall of 2005, the Pavilion has transformed a seasonally limited space into a safe, year-round facility that allows residents to enjoy the benefits of Sunnybrook’s gardening and pet therapy

programs, meeting important therapeutic needs for patients who suffer cognitive impairments from age-related dementia.

The Simpson Garden Pavilion includes a new outdoor space and an enclosed greenhouse, both equipped for gardening. It features raised gardening beds

that are wheelchair-accessible, a sun-sheltered outdoor patio space with benches and planters, year-round access to the greenhouse and garden space, and two doghouses to welcome canine friends visiting the Pavilion. Most importantly, the greenhouse and outdoor garden provide a comfortable, staff-monitored

environment, opening up the benefits and stimulation of our therapy programs to 68 residents who would otherwise be unable to experience them.

In addition to providing initial funding for the Pavilion, Mr. O’Sullivan encouraged friends and family to support the fund in honour of Ms Simpson’s birthday. These, and future, donations will support the upkeep and maintenance of the Pavilion, a fitting tribute to the Simpson family, while providing Sunnybrook’s patients fresh air and the joy of nature, when it matters most.

Events are just one way the Foundation raises funds for the Hospital’s priority programs. Our last year was a year of galas, golf,

and community events, some of which are highlighted on the next few pages. On April 12th, the Centre for Research in Women’s Health was the beneficiary of Sunnybrook’s signature event, An Evening With Al and Tipper Gore, which raised over $1 million in net proceeds. “I’m extremely thrilled about the support we’ve received – this is a fundraising success,” said event co-chair, Ana Lopes. “These funds will support research that will impact patient care now and into the future.”

The evening, co-chaired by Ana Lopes and Maureen Parkinson, drew 1,200 guests from a variety of sectors to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Everyone was treated to an interactive evening of ideas and insights with Vice-President Gore, the 45th vice-president of the United States, who shared his experiences from his involvement in key world events. Tipper shared her perspectives on women’s health, particularly on mental health, a priority program at Sunnybrook. The event brought together many notable guests such as Lieutenant Governor James Bartleman, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and John Tory, Leader of the Ontario Conservative Party, among others. “It was an occasion of bright minds, insight and fundraising to support the great work of our doctors and researchers,” said Ana.

Sunnybrook also hosted two sold-out golf events at the beautiful Angus Glen Golf Club. The Women’s Health Golf Classic took place on May 30th and raised close to $70,000 net to support a planned new digital mammography suite at Sunnybrook’s Breast Cancer Research Centre.

Later in the summer, golf enthusiasts teed off at the 10th annual Sunnybrook Golf Classic. The event brought together Hospital supporters, physicians and administrative staff for an exciting day of golf and entertainment on the scenic course. The golfers showcased their talents on the greens and helped raise over $120,000 for the $300 million Campaign for Sunnybrook supporting our capital expansion and other priority programs.

Sunnybrook Foundation is delighted to have the support of enthusiastic and dedicated sponsors and donors who realize our vision. Your commitment is important to us and many of these events would not be possible without your generous contributions. Thank you for helping Sunnybrook Foundation be here, when it matters most.

“I’m extremely thrilled about the support we’ve received and the fund-raising success of the event. These funds will support research that will impact patient care now and into the future.”~ Ana Lopes

Run for Research

A tremendous outpouring of support for Sunnybrook Foundation was evident in an abundance of stellar events that raised over

$2,370,000 to support the extraordinary programs at our Hospital.

The 24th annual Manulife Run for Research raised $240,000 in support of the Sunnybrook Research Institute. The event’s 1,200 participants included runners, walkers, families, community members, Hospital staff, sponsors, Veterans, Shriners, volunteers and pets.

The success of the 2005 event would not have been possible without the support of the presenting sponsor, Manulife Financial. In their first year as sponsor, Manulife’s employees showed tremendous dedication.

“We jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this event,” said Judy Blasutti, Manager of Community Affairs for Manulife Financial. “We promote a healthy lifestyle to all of our employees and support institutions that promote good health to the community at large. It was just a natural fit for us to support the Sunnybrook Research Institute because of the incredible work they are doing that will help to keep us all healthy.”

Since its inception, the Run has raised over $2.6 million for a variety of essential research initiatives. Over 31,000 people have participated since then, covering more than 205,000 kilometres.

In 2005, forty-five community groups hosted a variety of entertaining events that ranged from golf tournaments and concerts, to elementary school fundraisers and barbecues, and even a board game tournament. Golf is a popular way to fundraise, and there were numerous successful golf events in the last year. The North York Hockey League teed off at the 21st Whistler’s Open Golf Tournament on July 9th, at Bear Creek Golf Club. More than 175 golfers representing eight hockey leagues came together

to raise $18,000 for Sunnybrook’s Critical Care Unit and to honour the memory of Kevin Hill, a senior referee with the league who passed away following his battle with Hodgkin’s disease. “We’re extremely pleased the proceeds of our event are supporting the Critical Care Unit,” said donations co-ordinator Gerry Stephen. “It seems that almost every participant in our event knows someone who has been treated at Sunnybrook.”

On August 31st, 200 enthusiastic golfers raised $45,000 and spent a relaxing spa and golf day at

the Vascular Clinic Invitational Golf Tournament at the Hockley Valley Resort. “Everyone had a wonderful day supporting this cause and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of all the people involved,” said event co-chair Gus Arrigo. “I’m excited to be a part of this fundraiser which will improve our Vascular Clinic and the services we provide to patients at Sunnybrook.”

Bonded by friendship and mah-jong, eight women have gathered each week for the last 10 years to play together. Of the eight friends, two have been stricken with breast cancer. The women, along with six other players, formed Maj for Mammaries to raise money to support breast cancer awareness and research at Sunnybrook.

Their first fundraising event, Shanghai Sisters, was held on October 23rd and attracted more than 250 people who were eager to put their board game skills to the test at mah-jong, social bridge and other games. The event raised $60,000 to help fund cancer research and prevent the illness from affecting women in the prime of their lives. “I’m ecstatic and so proud. We had modest and realistic expectations, but hard work and community support really paid off,” said event chair Rickey Fitzerman.

Sunnybrook Foundation is thankful to have enthusiastic supporters who invest an incredible amount of time, talent and skill into planning outstanding events to raise funds for our Hospital. We thank you for your commitment and support, it really matters.

The Campaign goal for Perinatal & Gynaecology is $53 million, which includes building

a new NICU by 2009, to be located on the Bayview campus

Sunnybrook is here for you when it matters most. With one million patient visits per year, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is focused on providing the very best patient care, conducting leading-edge research, and educating the next generation of health care providers.

Thank you for your contribution to yet another successful year, as we move toward our goal of raising $300 million for capital expansion and other key priorities that will help us achieve our vision of transforming health care. With your support, we will achieve this goal.

It has been an exciting year for us. In August 2005, the Honourable George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, announced a three-point plan for our organization that will improve health care for women, reduce wait times for hip and knee replacements, create a state-of-the-art facility for high-risk pregnancies and critically ill newborns, and improve access to emergency care.

The Minister’s announcement is beginning to become reality. By 2009 we will double the size of our emergency department and regional trauma centre, and add four floors to the top of M-Wing at the Sunnybrook campus to provide a wonderful new home for the Perinatal & Gynaecology program currently located at Women’s College, including a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and labour and delivery suites. M-Wing will also be home to new facilities for leading-edge research in cardiac imaging and intervention and Canada’s most comprehensive Breast Cancer Research Centre.

At the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre, we are creating a Centre of Excellence in hip and knee replacement surgery that will nearly triple the number of surgical procedures performed over the next three years, to become the largest program of its kind in North America.

This unprecedented growth would not be possible without the support of donors like you. We are one-third of the way in our $300 million Campaign for Sunnybrook. Help us keep the momentum, and make our goals a reality.

Thank you for sharing our vision for Sunnybrook, and thank you, for helping to ensure that we are here, when it matters most.

Message from Our Volunteer Leadership 2005 – 2006: Re-Defining SunnybrookFocus. This was the mandate for the past year. Focus on our four strategic objectives, continuing and improving upon our work, as we sought to:

• Generate revenue to support the Hospital through a $300 million campaign; • Become a donor and volunteer destination of choice in Toronto; • Become a donor-centred organization; and, • Become a leader in health care through operational efficiency and effectiveness.

These were our objectives, all in a context of remarkable change, as “Sunnybrook” became re-defined as an institution, drawing upon the best of our past, and setting a vision for the best of what we can become.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre emerged as a newly defined Hospital on the last day of our fiscal year. It is comprised of what you know well – the largest single hospital site in Canada, a national leader in breast, prostate and colorectal cancer, international leadership in cardiac imaging through the Schulich Heart Centre, the city’s largest stroke centre, and the country’s first and largest trauma centre – and two new programs that have become identified as “Sunnybrook” over the past eight years: the Perinatal & Gynaecology Program and the Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre.

This led to one of the most challenging questions posed to us: how do you capture the essence of “Sunnybrook” in a single phrase or concept? “When it matters MOST” is our answer. Sunnybrook is the hospital that you, your family and friends turn to when help is most urgently needed, when other hospitals can’t solve the problem, or when a new solution has to be invented. The Foundation’s volunteers and staff are proud to tell you this story every day, and are grateful that you, our donors, have responded to us by giving your support “When it matters most.”

Our Fundraising SuccessRaised dollars increased again in 2005-06, jumping to $46.3 million, up 78 per cent from the previous year and 141 per cent from two years ago. Sunnybrook Foundation’s success was led by the $20 million gift from Susanne and Bill Holland that launched our campaign to triple the number of hip and knee replacements done at the newly named Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre (see page 13), and built on by the tremendous generosity of tens of thousands of other donors, as exemplified in the stories and listings throughout this Report.

This July, the Foundation passed the $100 million mark in Campaign funds raised. Proceeds to date have supported an array of our priority projects, from the Goldman Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery to the Emergency & Trauma Centre expansion. We are on our way to our goal of $300 million, and, with all of our capital projects now approved by the provincial government, will turn to you over the next year to provide the funding to ensure that we can attract and retain the best possible medical professionals, giving them the space and tools required to do their work.

Operating More EfficientlyWe operated more efficiently this past year than we have in previous years. Our cost per dollar raised dropped to 12 cents on the dollar, less than half of last year’s 25 cents. Last year, we achieved one of the lowest absolute dollar costs of running the Foundation in recent years. This came as we reduced our staff count and re-focused our team to provide better support to our donors and medical professionals, generating more funds for each dollar spent. We are proud to be one of the most efficient fundraising foundations in Canada.

Our receipt turn-around time, reporting to donors on how funds have been spent, and investment management and financial processes have all been improved this year, meeting and respecting the needs of our donors, and showing our gratitude for your support.

The Campaign for SunnybrookGeorge Fierheller is leading an expanding team of volunteers who will tell the story of Sunnybrook and the impact you can have through supporting our vision. In this Report we introduce our Campaign Cabinet (see page 34), and are excited to have the volunteer leadership to carry us to and past our $300 million goal.

From all of us at the Foundation, thank you for helping Sunnybrook, when it matters most.

A gift to Sunnybrook Foundation in your will is a simple and powerful way to leave a legacy that will help others for years to come. For more information on planning your legacy, call Sandra Scian at 416-480-5877, or visit www.sunnybrookfoundation.ca.

Supporters who donate $500 or more within a year are recognized as members of the Fellowship Society of Sunnybrook Foundation. In addition to recognition in our Report to Donors and our Donor Recognition Centre, Fellowship Society members receive regular publications from the Foundation. Members also receive advance notice of opportunities to participate in major Foundation events such as the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting and special “by-invitation-only” Fellowship Society health and research lectures throughout the year, giving members the opportunity to have their questions answered by our medical leaders.

Most importantly, the greatest reward for our Fellowship Society members is knowing that they have made a significant contribution to progressive research and education, and funding for much-needed equipment, leading to ongoing improvements in advanced patient care, when it matters most.
