However, it can be difficult if you do not know what breed to look for.There are many small dog breeds, but they all have different height and weight averages.An important aspect to consider is the breeder. There are a lot of breeders out there that are dishonest, only caring for money.They may claim the dog is a pure breed, meanwhile it is not. This can affect the dogs weight and height.Always do your research when dealing with a breeder.

The Bolognese is an excellent companion that craves the attention of its owner. Separation anxiety is a strong possibility with this breed if not trained to be alone.This is an intelligent breed so training should not be too difficult.They do not have a strong personality therefore hard-headedness should not be a problem.

The Chinese Crested comes in two coat variations: hairless and powderpuff. The hairless coat is pictured above. Hair is still present on the extremities of the body.This is a breed that loves the indoor life. They do like to explore different areas on walks, however they prefer to stay indoors most of the time.They need to be socialized at a young age to ensure they get along well with other dog breeds.

Chinese Imperial

The Chinese Imperial is not a well known breed but they make excellent companions. They love to please their owners. This makes training rather easy. They love to be around children and love nothing more than to curl up on a lap. But because they are so small, it is important to avoid accidental injury.They are prone to separation anxiety so it is important to train them to be on their own without any problems occurring.

English Toy Terrier

The English Toy Terrier is a loveable breed that is loyal to its family. They are known to be aggressive so socialization with other dogs is important for them to get along with other breeds.They are an intelligent breed so training is rather easy. They do have a stubborn side from time to time.They are hunters and have a high prey drive. Historically speaking, they are not to be trusted off-leash.

The Japanese Chin is an outgoing breed that likes to meet new people.They have a straightforward personality so training should be rather easy. They can be aggressive towards other dogs and snappish if they feel they are being mishandled.

Miniature Pinscher

The MiniPin, as they are known as, is a high energy dog that needs its daily exercise. They love to chase balls and dig. They can become very assertive and aggressive with other dogs if not socialized well. They can be stubborn but they are an intelligent breed. Training should not present too many challenges however their assertive nature may come out.

Papillon

The Papillon is known as the butterfly dog, because of its raised ears. The Papillon and the Phalene are related however the Papillon’s popularity is much higher.They are a very affectionate breed and make excellent companions. They need plenty of attention and are often used as therapy dogs.If early socialization is not present, they can develop a dominant personality so it is important to establish who the pack leader is.

Phalene

The Phalene is not popular at all compared to the Papillon, however it displays many of the same characteristics. A notable difference being the Phalene doesn’t have raised ears. The Phalene is actually considered a variety of the Papillon, and not a separate breed.The Phalene makes an excellent companion and is very loyal.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian needs plenty of attention and loves the family life. They are loyal to their owners and will do anything to protect them. This means that they may bark and show aggression so it is important to train them early on. They can be quite stubborn and are notorious for being difficult to house break. Remaining consistent and firm in training is very important with this breed.

Toy Poodle

The Toy Poodle is the only weight class that qualifies for Poodles. The Miniature Poodle averages 12 to 18 lbs in weight.The Poodle is known for being extremely smart and easy to train. This breed has been used in the US military since the 17th century.They need their daily exercise and be mentally stimulated to be happy. They make great companions and good watchdogs.

They are a sensitive breed so they don’t respond well to aggressive training.
