New Year.

At Diwali, Hindus remember the story of Rama and Sita. It is taken from the Ramayana which is considered a holy book.
Prince Rama was supposed to become king, but his stepmother drove him away and
forced him to flee to the forest. His beautiful wife, Sita, went with him. Rama was
worried about her safety, but Sita wanted to be with her husband even though it meant
she would need to leave the palace and live a poor, simple life.

Rama and Sita soon settled into a peaceful and happy life in the
forest. But one day Ravana, the demon king, spotted Sita and fell in love with her. He wanted her all for himself so he came up with a
plan to kidnap her.

One day when Rama and Sita were walking in the forest they spotted a beautiful deer. It had
golden fur and shining antlers. It was so beautiful that Sita asked Rama to catch it for
her. Rama agreed and went off to hunt the deer. While he was away, Ravana came to
their house and captured Sita. He flew her off on a flying chariot but Sita thought quickly and dropped some of her jewellery on the
ground for Rama to follow.

Meanwhile, Rama realised he had been tricked when he caught the deer and it
turned into a demon. He raced back to his home and was frantic when he found that
Sita was missing. He searched and searched and then found some of Sita’s jewellery. He
followed the trail she had left. On the trail he met Hanuman, the monkey king, who had seen Sita’s jewellery falling from the sky.
Rama asked for Hanuman’s help.

Hanuman gathered all the monkeys in the world to search for Sita. They searched and searched. Eventually Hanuman found the island where Sita was being held captive. But the island was impossible to get to because there were fierce waves crashing against its shores. Luckily, Hanuman
was the son of a wind god and he took a deep breath and leaped over the waves. He found Sita and she was very happy to see him.

Hanuman then went to find Rama and tell him that he had found Sita. Rama and his army charged back to the island but they still couldn’t get
to her because of the waves. They started to build a bridge. All the animals for miles came to help and soon they had made it across.
Over the bridge, they had to fight all the demons to get to Sita.
They fought bravely and then Rama found Ravana. He used a special bow and arrow from the sky god, said a prayer and shot an arrow into Ravana’s heart. The evil
demon was dead.

With all the demons gone, Rama and Sita were free to return to the palace and take their rightful places as King
and Queen and the whole world rejoiced. On their journey home, the gods
showered garlands of flowers from the sky and every household lit a row of candles in their window to welcome them home. They ruled happily for
many years.
