That’s Chanukah BY RABBI LABEL LAM
It was the last day of Chanukah on a Sunday. We got the call early in the morning. The
house was lled with excitement. A young lady we knew very well, who is now a mother of a wonderful Jewish family, was studying for conversion at that time and she had nally gotten the “go ahead”. When she called us that morning she enthusiastically shared with us her beautiful new Jewish name, and invited us to a small Chanukah party. My wife and I made the long trek out to Long Island. She was brimming with joy surrounded by supportive families and friends. The table was lled with brunch goodies and we all sat down to eat -sing and celebrate.
At one moment one of the lead Rabbis there nudged me gently and said,” Nu Reb Label, say something!” I have to admit I was woefully unprepared for the sudden invitation. I asked him if we can sing another song and we did. During the musical interlude a question occurred to me that I am not sure if I heard from a reliable source or if I had thought of it myself. I apologize for not remembering. This is what I shared!
Why is this day, the eighth day of Chanukah titled” Zos Chanukah”? Of all the days of Chanukah, that name” Zos Chanukah”, why should the eighth day after all the candles are extinguished be called” Zos Chanukah”!? Usually the word Zos or Zeh – “this” is reserved for times when there’s something to point to.
When the Jewish people went through the split sea they declared, “This is my G-d…” Rashi tells us that they all witnessed loftiest of visions... When Moshe was introduced to the Mitzvah of the new month he was told,” this month is for you…” Again we are informed by Rashi that Moshe was shown a sliver of the moon. In each case the word “Zeh”–”this” means something was at hand.
Similarly when a Torah scroll is lifted in synagogue congregants gather around and point with their nger while reciting, “This is the Torah that Moshe placed before the children of Israel by G-d through the agency of Moshe” Many are careful to position themselves to see the script
inside the scroll while indicating with a nger. Why? So the declaration should be truthful.
Why is this time without visuals called “Zos Chanukah”? The simple answer is that over the course of the eight days of Chanukah we read in the Torah about the inaugural activities of the
heads of the tribes which concludes on the eighth day of Chanukah when we say,” this is the inauguration of the altar”. It is followed by Aaron’s invitation to
light the menorah of the Tabernacle. It is because of those
words,”Zos Chanukas HaMizbeach” “this is the dedication of the altar”- this day is titled based on the rst two words,” Zos
Chanukas...”. Still there must be something more.
Chanukah is an expression of -Chinuch-education. How do we know
when education has taken place? Sure when we look into the classroom and watch the teachers teaching the students learning we assume that that’s education. However, that might just be the process of education. How can we measure when education has taken place?
One of my Rebbes used to tell us that the nal exam, the symptom that Torah learning has been absorbed into psyche of the student is when one sees how they behave in the dining room and with each other after the classes are complete. Here too, after the lights are out, after eight full days of lighting the Chanukah candles, after all the scholastic activities are concluded a burning question remains. Somebody once came to a great Rabbi and boasted with extra pride, “Rabbi, I
nished the entire Talmud!” The Rabbi, sensing his haughty attitude answered him sharply, “And what did the Talmud teach you?!”
After eight days of lighting the Chanukah candles, eight full days of expressing dedication- honoring the education process, we might wonder,” what have the candles ignited in us?!” When all the lights are out and there is no one there to watch, when all the teacher-types have retreated, then what remains, that’s Chanukah!

KASHRUS HOTLINE FAQQ. What is Vaad policy concerning canned,
frozen or jarred fruits and vegetables – do they need a Kashrus certification?
CANNED or JARRED FRUIT that does not list any coloring, flavoring or grape juice in the ingredients does not require Kashrus certification, provided that the label does not state product of Israel or China.
CANNED or JARRED VEGETABLES require reliable Kashrus certification, even if they do not contain any questionable ingredients, because they are often cooked in the same equipment as non-Kosher products.
Most FROZEN FRUIT that do not list any added ingredients other than sugar do not require Kashrus certification, except for strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries due to possible insect infestation, and except for products of Israel. (The status of products of China is unclear; certification is preferable.)
Most FROZEN VEGETABLES that do not list any added ingredients other than salt do not require Kashrus certification, with the following exceptions:
those which pose insect infestation issues (artichoke hearts, asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and spinach) potato products, which may be partially precooked in oil cooked winter squash, due to an issue of bishul akumproducts of Israel. (The status of products of China is unclear; certification is preferable.)
Q: I see a plain OU on a Worcestershire sauce, but when I looked at the ingredient panel, I noticed that anchovies are listed. Can I use it on my grilled meats?
FOODS CONTAINING FISH: Most Worcestershire sauces, some steak sauces, and some dressings, juices and margarines contain anchovies or omega-3 from fish oil, and list this in the ingredients. If the amount of fish is significant (more than 1/60), the certifying agency will require the word FISH or an F on the label next to the Kashrus symbol to indicate that this product should not be eaten with meat. [For example, Lea & Perrins, ShopRite and Great Value (Wal-Mart) brands of Worcestershire sauce contain significant amounts and are labeled OU FISH.] If the amount is not significant, there are differing Halachic opinions regarding the permissibility of using the product with meat, and the consumer
should consult his Rav. The OU’s policy is to permit this, and therefore OU Worcestershire sauces with insignificant amounts of fish are labeled with a plain OU. [For example, Heinz and French’s brands.] Consumers who wish to be stringent should check the ingredient listings of all such products for the presence of fish.
Some examples of products that contain insignificant amounts of fish derived Omega-3 (Omega-3 EPA/DHA) are Tropicana “Healthy Heart Orange Juice with Omega-3” (labeled OK-F), Ken’s “Light Options” dressings (OU), and Smart Balance Buttery Spreads in the Heart Right, Omega-3 and Extra Virgin Olive Oil varieties (OU).
HELLMAN’S MAYONNAISE states that it is a good source of “Omega-3 ALA”. This is a different type of Omega-3 which is derived from soybean oil, not from fish.
Q: I looked through the ingredient panel of an U D product but I did not notice any dairy ingredients. What is the reason it was marked U D?
DE after a Kashrus symbol is a designation used by many Kashrus certifications to indicate that a product was manufactured on dairy equipment but does not contain dairy ingredients, and may be eaten after meat without a waiting period, but not with meat. The OU does not use the DE symbol, but instead marks both dairy and dairy equipment products as OU-D. Therefore, when an OU-D product does not list any obvious dairy ingredients on the label, we often do not know whether it is marked OU-D due to actual dairy ingredients that are not listed openly (e.g. there may be dairy in the “flavoring”), or if it is only dairy equipment. In such cases, consumers who wish to ascertain the product’s correct status should contact the OU at 212-613-8241 or at [email protected]. Please note that even if the current status is determined to be dairy equipment, this should be periodically reconfirmed, since manufacturers frequently reformulate their products and may add dairy ingredients. Please also forward any such information received to the COR at [email protected].
(Note: Whey, lactose, caseinate [in “non-dairy” creamers] and lactalbumin are dairy ingredients.)
The HALF-MOON K Kashrus symbol is part of OU Kosher supervision, and is acceptable.

Every night of Chanuka we sing the piyut Maoz Tzur, which mentions the principal redemptions throughout the history of the Jewish people. It is clear why we specify Chanuka, for that is the holiday that we are currently experiencing, but why do we mention all of the other periods?
We have a similar situation when one comes to a place where a personal miracle occured. He recites the bracha, “Blessed is He Who made a miracle for me in this place.” If he had a number of miracles transpire, he should add “in this place and this place ...” (Shulchan Aruch 218:4-5). If the main bracha is for the miracle that happened at the place that he is actually looking at, why must one mention all the other miracles that happened to him?
The same question can be asked with regard to Birkas Hamazon. Why isn’t it enough to thank Hashem for the food and sustenance that He has given us, which has occasioned our gratitude at this moment? Why must we also express our
gratitude for Torah and Eretz Yisrael as well? Our Sages understood that when a person
reaches a state of inspiration about one of Hashem’s miracles, he should not let this opportunity slip through his ngers. Rather he should use this valuable moment in order to thank Hashem for all of the kindness that he has done for him (Rav Yoel Shwartz as cited in Mizmor LeSoda, p. 40-41). After thanking Him for the entire gamut of Jewish history, he will see clearly that Hashem’s Hand is the one and only force guiding it, and he will realize that the same is true about his personal life. This will bring tremendous closeness to his Creator.
Through the recitation of the extra te llos and brachos of Chanuka, may we all be inspired to recognize Hashem’s glory and splendor at every moment and be motivated to serve Him with a fresh surge of inspiration during the rest of the year. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org
