Often celebrated as a children’s holiday, Chanukah also has many adult lessons to teach: perseverance; faith in God; the triumph of good over evil; and more. There is plenty of symbolism to be read into the story of the tiny band of Maccabees defeating the superior forces of a pagan enemy. However, the most basic message of Chanukah comes not from the story and its several miracles, but from the way that we celebrate it—we light candles. The candles, we are told, commemorate the miracle of the tiny cruse of oil that lasted for eight days. It’s a wonderful story, “discovered” by the rabbis living under Roman occupation, several hundred years after the Maccabees, as a way of downplaying the idea of Jews rebelling against their oppressor. But even without that story, the kindling of Chanukah lights remains a powerful symbol, whose meaning transcends the event it is meant to recreate. The candle lighting reminds us that it is precisely at the moment of greatest darkness that a tiny beacon of light does the most good. This is a crucial idea to keep in mind when we look around at the darkness, the evil in the world around us. We could so easily feel overwhelmed. What can I do? Shalom and Happy Chanukah!
The Chanukah blessings, and the 4 questions for Passover, are probably the blessings that our community knows the best. We drum the 4 questions into our children’s heads, or mouths,
so that they are prepared to impress the family at the seder table. The Chanukah blessings are chanted every night for 8 nights which helps us to learn them through repetition and the Chanukah blessings might be the thing that stands between us and gifts, or chocolate, so there is incentive to learn them.
This brings us to the nusach for the Chanukah blessings! Chanukah is a rabbinic tradition added to our lexicon of holidays. By the time Chanukah was added the soundtrack of the Jewish people was developing, becoming more creative, and diverse. That being said the Chanukah minhag (tradition/the way we do it) has become to sing the blessings in a particular way. For many it is the only way that they know to sing blessings over candles. Although there is a different nusach for Shabbat, many light candles for Shabbat using the melody traditionally prescribed for the Chanukah blessings. There is NO wrong way to chant a blessing! I mean it – when praising God, Nike’s expression “just do it” totally applies. Yes, it is true there is a prescribed way to chant our liturgy called nusach but I would much rather you chant a prayer the way that you learned it and from the heart than not participate.
The liturgy surrounding the lighting of the candles includes two blessings (the first for the actually lighting and the second in gratitude for the miracle), Shehecheyanu (but only on the first night), Hannerot Hallalu and Ma’oz Tzur.
Hannerot Hallalu literally meaning “these candles” is sung as a declaration that the candles are holy and that their sole purpose is to commemorate the events of Chanukah. Unlike the Shabbat candles, they may not be used as a source of light.
Ma’oz Tzur is probably familiar to most but not in its entirety. I found this wonderful quote at judaism.about.com:
Maoz Tzur is a liturgical poem called a piyyut. The first letters of the first five stanzas form an acrostic, meaning they spell the poet’s name, Mordecai, in Hebrew (mem, reish, dalet, kaf, yud). The six-stanza poem recounts the many times that God has delivered the Jewish people from their foes. The first stanza, which is the one that is usually sung on Chanukah, thanks God for this protection. The next five stanzas talk about the Israelite Exodus from Egypt as well as the Israelite liberation from Babylonia, Persia, and Syria. The fifth verse retells the story of Chanukah, saying: “The Greeks gathered against me... they broke down the walls of my towers, and defiled all the oils. But from the last remaining flask a miracle was wrought.”

DirectionsPreheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 24 mini-muffin cups.
Mix ½ cup sugar, ¼ cup margarine, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Stir in the milk, then mix in the baking powder and flour until just combined. Fill the prepared mini muffin cups about half full.
Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are lightly golden, 15 to 20 minutes.
While muffins are baking, place ¼ cup of melted margarine in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together ½ cup of sugar with the cinnamon. Remove muffins from their cups, dip each muffin in the melted margarine, and roll in the sugar-cinnamon mixture. Let cool and serve.

David Arfa, a maggid (Jewish storyteller), delighted Temple Beth Abraham’s school children on Sunday, November 6. Kindergarten through 3rd grade heard “The Adventures of Honi Carobseed,” based on the famous Jewish character, Honi the Circlemaker. The 4th through 6th grades listened to the story of “The Life and Times of Herschel of Ostropol: The Greatest Prankster Who Ever Lived.” After school, several students as well as adults attended a special hour-long workshop with David called “How to Tell So Your Parents Will Kvell.” Participants were given tips to help them tap into their own storytelling abilities. The program was provided by a grant to TBA member and teacher Marla Peers from the Fran Friedman Fund for the Enrichment of Children.
