drawn from his research. He sees mixed couples whobring more than one reli-gion into the house. “Theygo on Saturday to syna-gogue and on Sunday to theEpiscopal church or thePresbyterian church” Arielsays. “If you think there’sno such thing as being amember of both a Jewishcommunity and a non-Jewish community thinkagain”.

It might be assumedthat Reform congregationswould be the only stream ofJudaism accommodatingnon-Jews. But for the pastfew years Conservative rab-bis have also wrestled withthe issue of non-Jewishspouses in synagogue life. And while practices varyfrom synagogue to syna-gogue there is a generalagreement that changesmust be made. “My col-

that holidays such as Eidal-Adha were nowhere to beseen, the Board voted toremove all religious desig-nations.

The decision hassparked outrage from manyon the right of the politicalspectrum. “School DumpsChristmas to AppeaseMuslims”, blared TodStarnes of Fox News Radio. It’s “bad news for you Jewsand Gentiles out there”.

Interestingly, the 7-1 board vote displeasedsome Muslims as well. Oneactivist Muslim, ZainabChaudry, told theWashington Post that theschool board was willing to“go so far as to paint them-selves as the Grinch whostole Christmas” to avoidgiving equal treatment toMuslims. “They wouldremove the Christian holi-days and they wouldremove the Jewish holidaysfrom the calendar beforethey would consider addingthe Muslim holiday to thecalendar.”

Republican Victory

Not All Positive

It is the prevailingopinion that the Republicanvictory in the NovemberCongressional elections is“good for the Jews”. Andwhile it is true that theincreased Republican repre-sentation in Congress willbe good for Israel, someJewish organizations aremuch less enthusiasticabout what will happenafter the January 2015swearing in.

Jewish activists, hoping for reforms in immi-gration laws, improved vot-ing legislation, increasedfunding for social programs,

leagues are being chal-lenged to rethink positionsthat in the past we acceptedalmost as dogma,” saysRabbi Charles Simon, exec-utive director of theConservative movement’sFederation of Jewish Men’sClubs.

Non-Jews A Part

Of Synagogue Life

Yaakov Ariel, a pro-fessor of religious studiesat the University of NorthCarolina, has devoted con-siderable research to themake-up of synagogues inthe American south. Hehas concluded that “some-times as many as half thepeople in a synagogue areeither non-Jews or marriedto non-Jews.” No longer, says Ariel, is the syna-gogue a place where the“tribe” can tell Jewishjokes about non-Jews.“You can’t even use Yiddishterms like gut yontif

because half the peoplethere for Rosh Hashanahmight not know what itmeans.

Intermarriage is amajor contributor to thepresence of non-Jews atsynagogue services. But“spiritual seekers” can alsobe found, drawn toJudaism’s “openness” onspiritual and culturalissues. Even Blacks,Asians and Latinos findcomfort in the shul. Thisphenomenon, Ariel con-cludes, is the result ofJewish couples adoptingBlack, Asian and Latinobabies.

Non Jewish syna-gogue members are notmerely sitting in the backrows. They have becomeactive members of the syn-agogue. They are presi-dents of synagogue boardsand serve on any numberof committees. Some non-Jewish spouses become soenthused about Judaismthrough their synagoguethat they actually end upconverting.

And there’s onemore conclusion Ariel has

Reflections on

ChanukahThe story of Chanukah is, with that of

Queen Esther of Purim fame, among the best-known legends of Jewish history. JudasMaccabee, his father Mattathias and theother stalwarts of the Maccabean line, havebeen celebrated in song and story for cen-turies and there are few Jewish children whohave not been thrilled by the heroism of theirancestors.

Undoubtedly, a considerable share of theimportance which has been attached toChanukah is its chronological proximity toChristmas and the necessity of offering aJewish counterpart to the influence which thisChristian festival exerts upon Jewish children.Be that as it may, it is no more than fitting thatwe celebrate joyously this spiritual victory,ever-present testimony to the validity of a greatreligion and ethical system.

The MontgomeryCounty Board of Educationfor the suburbanWashington D.C. school dis-trict has always closed forJewish and Christian holi-days. And that apparentlyis not about to change. Butthe school calendar will nolonger mention Christmasor provide the dates forEaster, Yom Kippur andRosh Hashanah. Aftercomplaints from the grow-ing local Muslim population

A Joyous Chanukah Celebration

Amidst the contro-versy over the MetropolitanOpera's performance of"The Death of Klinghoffer,"little has been said aboutthe Palestinian leader whomasterminded the attack inwhich Leon Klinghoffer wasmurdered.

The decision tohijack the cruise shipAchille Lauro, in 1985, wasmade by MuhammadZaidan, also known asMuhammad Abbas or AbuAbbas, leader of thePalestine Liberation Front.(Not to be confused with hisc o m r a d e - i n - a r m sMahmoud Abbas, currentlypresident of the Palestinian

What about Abbas, the man who was ultimatelyresponsible for the hijack-ing and murder? ThePalestinian leadership ral-lied around him. HisPalestine Liberation Frontremained part and parcel

of Yasir Arafat's PalestineLiberation Organization.Arafat's foreign minister,Farouk Kaddoumi, accusedMrs. Marilyn Klinghoffer ofmurdering her husband forinsurance money. Abbashimself offered an alterna-tive explanation, at a pressconference in Algeria in1988: "Maybe he was tryingto swim for it."

With Arafat'sendorsement, Abbas andthe PLF continued carryingout terrorist attacks. In fact,it was Arafat's refusal tocondemn a PLF attack in1990 that promptedPresident George H.W. Bush

A MATTER OF TIME

The ObamaAdministration rejectedIsraeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu’s com-parison of ISIS and Hamas,a view that is both ignorantand dangerous, but consis-tent with the internationaltendency to treat thePalestinians as a uniqueclass that deserves specialtreatment, including look-ing the other way when itcomes to their ideology.

Hamas, however, does not conceal its inten-tions, publishing itscovenant in 1988 with anexplicit call for Israel’sdestruction. Notice also thatHamas does not distinguishbetween Jews and Israel:Here are a few excerpts:

Our struggle against

the Jews is very great andvery serious...It strives toraise the banner of Allahover every inch ofPalestine...It is one of thelinks in the chain of thestruggle against the Zionistinvaders...

The Prophet, Allahbless him and grant himsalvation, has said: "TheDay of Judgment will notcome about until Muslimsfight the Jews (killing theJews), when the Jew willhide behind stones andtrees. The stones and treeswill say, ‘O Muslims, OAbdulla, there is a Jewbehind me, come and killhim’”....There is no solution

for the Palestine questionexcept through Jihad.Initiatives, proposals andinternational conferencesare all a waste of time andvain endeavors. Palestine isan Islamic land.

The principles of thecovenant, which Hamasofficials and clerics publiclyrepeat without hesitation, are blatantly anti-Semitic,containing classic conspira-cy theories straight out ofthe Protocols of the Eldersof Zion. Jews are accused of“undermining societies, destroying values, corrupt-ing consciences, deteriorat-ing character and annihilat-ing Islam.” Jews are also

“behind the drug trade andalcoholism...to facilitate itscontrol and expansion.”

According to Hamas,Muslims must combat thethreat posed by the Jewsthrough jihad. And this isnot just a Palestinian oblig-ation; Hamas expects theentire Islamic world to jointhis holy war. The bottomline for Hamas – and all theIslamists – is that “no part

to rescind his earlier recog-nition of the PLO. After the1990 attack, Abbas disap-peared from public view. The U.S. government issueda warrant for his arrest andoffered a $250,000 rewardfor his capture. The huntwas on.

But then Bill Clintonwas elected president in1992, and the hunt wascalled off. The Oslo Accordsbetween Israel and the PLObecame the centerpiece ofthe Clinton administration'sMideast policy. Arafat, chairman of the newPalestinian Authority, wasproclaimed to be a "moder-ate" and the leaders of vari-ous PLO factions, such asAbbas, tagged along. Inearly 1996, Abbas surfacedin PA-controlled Gaza - yetthe Clinton administrationdid not ask the PA to extra-dite him to stand trial forthe murder of Klinghoffer.

The U.S. Senateresponded by voting, 99-0,for a resolution askingPresident Clinton to requestAbbas's extradition. Theadministration declaredthat it was too late - thestatute of limitations onextraditing him hadexpired. But theCongressional ResearchService examined the lawand concluded that, in fact, the statute had been sus-pended because Abbas was

a fugitive from justice.The law didn't mat-

ter. President Clinton dug inhis heels, refused to takeaction against Abbas, andhoped nobody would notice. And he was right.Journalists stopped askingabout Abbas. Jewish lead-ers moved on to otherissues. The senators whovoted for the resolutionwere not prepared to takestronger action, such ascutting off U.S. aid to thePalestinian Authority.

Abbas lived freely inGaza, while traveling oftento Baghdad, a longtime cen-ter of his terror activities. Then, in 2003, Abbas wascaptured by U.S. troopsthat were stationed in Iraqin the aftermath of the warthere. The "moderate"Palestinian Authority wasfurious and demanded hisrelease; PA spokesmanSaeb Erakat said that theOslo accords prohibited theprosecution of anyoneinvolved in terrorism before1993. (In fact, the U.S. isnot a signatory on the Osloaccords and the accords saynothing about the U.S.prosecuting anybody.)

But Abbas managedto cheat justice yet again--eleven months after his cap-ture, Abbas died of naturalcauses while still inAmerican custody in Iraq.

Mr. Clinton neverseemed to realize that peacenegotiations have no mean-ing if the Palestinian sidestill regards terrorists asheroes and is angry if theyare prosecuted. ThePalestinian leadershipalways regardedKlinghoffer's killers - andAlisa's killers - as heroes. They never sincerelyrenounced terrorism andthey never viewed terroristsas bad guys. And that's whythe peace process - whetherBill Clinton's peace process,George W. Bush's peaceprocess, or Barack Obama'speace process - has neverresulted in peace.

On many occasionsin recent years, Mr. Clintonhas expressed regret that herefused to act against thegenocide in Rwanda. Onewonders how long it willtake him to express someregret that he refused to actagainst Palestinian terror-ists whose own genocidalcampaign has claimed somany innocent victims.

Contrary to adminis-tration claims that Hamasdoes not share the ISIS goalof world conquest, thegroup believes that, afterliberating Palestine, it cancreate a model Islamicstate, which will “becomethe vanguard of a largerIslamist movement that willembrace all Muslims, whowill eventually shed theirrespective nationalist con-victions and restore the uni-versal Islamic polity and theglories of the past.”

What makes negoti-ations with Hamas or anyother Islamist group impos-sible is that they believethey are acting according tothe immutable word of god.Israel cannot do anything tosatisfy them, as Egyptiancleric Muhammad HusseinYa’qub, said in a televisedsermon in 2009. “If theJews left Palestine to us,would we start loving them?Of course not,” heexplained. “The Jews areinfidels not because I say sobut because Allah does…They aren’t our enemiesbecause they occupyPalestine; they would be ourenemies even if they had notoccupied anything.” This isone example of why StateDepartment Arabists aredelusional to believe thatsolving the conflict with thePalestinians will bringpeace and tranquility to theMiddle East.

The radical Islamicfocus on Israel is partly amatter of convenience; itserves as an easy rallyingpoint for the masses. Moreover, these Muslimshave little doubt that Israelcan be destroyed becausetime is on their side. Giventhe perspective of centuries, the current situation inwhich the U.S. is the globalsuperpower and Israel isconsidered the region’sdominant power is deemeda temporary phenomenon. Many Muslims believe thatthe Palestinians will out-number the Jews in thearea between theMediterranean and JordanRiver (not to mention the300 million Muslims in sur-rounding countries) and willthen overwhelm the Jews bythe sheer force of theirnumbers. They also believethat it is just a matter oftime before they acquirenuclear weapons, regard-less of the outcome of theeffort to halt Iran’s nuclearprogram. At that point theywill also have the militarymeans to destroy Israel.

An Arab adage says,“A man who gains hisrevenge after 40 years isacting in haste.” Muslimsrecognize it took 200 yearsto expel the Crusaders, butthey did it and, though itmay take 200 years to expel
