AN AWESOME RESPONSIBILITYEvery year we are blessed with this feast of the Holy Family. After the onslaught of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday and the incessant mar-keting madness from around the world, many folks are left harried and exhausted. Lofty emotional expectations fueled by advertisements and social media often fall flat in the reality of impatience, sibling dis-cord and plain old bickering and whining.

Family life is often very messy and dis-appointing. Our hopes and our longings are not always fulfilled. Try as we might, things don’t always turn out as we hoped. So here are a few thoughts as this year draws to a close that may be helpful as you look toward 2020.

Parents: Pray for your children to be saints. Tell them that you are praying for them to be holy, to be different, to be exceptional in ways that our present world seemingly cannot comprehend. Here is a reflection from Pope Francis that may be helpful.

“Sanctity is something God gives us. Indeed, it is precisely in living with love and offering one’s own Christian witness in everyday affairs that we are called to become saints in the conditions and the state of life in which we find ourselves.

“Be a saint by living out your life with joy. Are you married? Be a saint by loving and taking care of your husband or your wife, as Christ did for the church. Are you an unmar-ried baptized person? Be a saint by carrying out your work with honesty and competence and by offering time in the service of your sisters and brothers.

“God gives you the grace to become holy. God communicates himself to you. Always, in every place, one can become a saint, that is, one can open oneself up to this grace, which works inside us and leads us to holiness.

“Be a saint by passionately teaching your children or grandchildren to know and to follow Jesus. Be a saint by becoming a visible sign of God’s love and of God’s presence alongside one another.

“Every state of life leads to holiness, always! In your home, on the street, at work, at

school, at church, in that moment and in your state of life, the path to sainthood has been opened.

“Don’t be discouraged to pursue this path. It is God alone who gives us the grace. The Lord asks only this: that we be in commu-nion with him and at the service of our sisters and brothers.”One final thought before we look ahead to the coming weeks. Have “tech-free times and places” in your home. No phones at the dinner table: no exceptions unless you happen to be a doctor or a priest on call! Simply be present to one another for the half hour or hour that is really meant to be a “holy hour” for your family. Go deep with your family. Don’t simply stay on the surface. Your family is too valuable and the world needs holy Catholic families to transform it.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:January 1, the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. This is a Holy Day of Ob-ligation so we have a Vigil Mass December 31 at 5:30pm and 10am January 1 downtown. Make this a family affair.

January 3, 7:30pm come experience the moving power of our organ in our newly renovated downtown church. Austrian organist Lukas Hasler will perform this extraordinary concert. Don’t miss this incredible event. Go to our parish website to get your tickets.

January 4, 6pm is our annual small group chili feed potluck. This is always such a wonderful event. Bring your favorite recipe to share with others and your finest cornbread. Contact Michaela Moreau at the parish office.

January 12, 9:30am Mass downtown; Arch-bishop Etienne will be principal celebrant and homilist. This will be his first visit to Saint Michael Parish. We are very much looking forward to hosting.

January 14 is our next Financial Peace University class. Start your new year off well. Begin the journey of family financial wellness. Strengthen your current bud-geting with proven strategies for success. Consider giving the gift of this class to a loved one as a Christmas gift -- a gift that

will reap the benefits for years to come.

Most importantly—M. A. S. S.—Make All Sundays Sacred. Make this a nonnegotia-ble for your family and for yourself. Don’t let the world and its shallowness delude you with superficiality. Go deep!

In Christ, through the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio, I love you.

Thank you to all who helped prepare us for Christmas with a beautiful space and excellent music. Many served the Body of Christ as liturgical ministers on the feast of Christmas and will serve throughout the season preparing and proclaiming the Word, distributing communion, serving at the altar, turning the heat on and setting out the sacred vessels, passing out worship aids, bulletins and books as well as greeting and receiving the collection. You are so very important to a well-prayed liturgy and appreciated year-round for your commitment.

Ministry at Mass does not belong to a few but is for us all to consider as members of the Body of Christ. If you are feeling the nudge of the Holy Spirit to serve the community in this way please give us a call or ask parishioners who are already serving how to get started. They will tell you how serving brings more life and joy to them.

It is important to the life of the parish that we consistently grow our pool of servants. Invite someone you know to take a look at liturgical ministry at Mass. Invitation doesn't have to come once a year from the pulpit but is often felt more deeply when someone in the pew encourages participation. Let us help each other to belong by sharing in the holy work of Mass.

Small GroupsMaking a big parish seem smallWelcome! Are you new to church, new to Saint Michael Parish or coming home after a short or long absence? Or are you already a parishioner but not very connected, maybe even a little lonely?

One way to connect with others is to join a small group, a faith deepening and sharing group of 6–12 people who meet weekly for six sessions during Advent and Lent (some meet year-round.) Most groups meet at someone's home, but a few meet at our downtown church. The format is briefly sharing how you have witnessed God present in your life or in those around you, reading the upcoming Sunday Gospel in a process called Lectio Divina, watching a short video reflection by our pastor, parochial vicar or staff member, discussing questions provided each week, planning how each of you can more fully live the Gospel in the upcoming week, and asking for specific prayers for your loved ones' needs.

Do not be afraid to try a small group. You don't have to share if you are shy or hesitant—the other group members will love you just as you are, and they willingly will pray for you (and you can pray for them silently). Reading and hearing the Gospel proclaimed is a great way to prepare for Mass on Sunday.

providing support for a way of life that today is frequently questioned, rejected, or censured.

Age range is high school and up, with a focus on young adults, but open to the entire parish. Childcare provided—please RSVP with names and ages of children to Hannah Hach at [email protected].

Living Your StrengthsWhy focus on developing strengths, not weaknesses?

READING COMPREHENSION CASE STUDY Years ago in Omaha, the Board of Education administered a reading comprehen-sion test to their incoming freshmen. One group of freshmen showed they read at a rate of 90 words per minute with good comprehension. The other group had a reading comprehension rate of 350 words per minute. That is nearly four times better than the group who scored 90 words per minute.

The Board of Education did not know what to do with the information, so they brought it to the University of Nebraska, which unleashed a firestorm of opin-ions. After much debate, they decided to put some of the students who scored the 90 with some of the students who scored the 350 and provided them with additional reading skills using the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading course. After 6 weeks, the students who scored 90 words per minute improved their score to 150 words per minute—a most respectable 67% improvement! What do you think happened to the students who originally scored 350? They increased their score to 2,900 words per minute! The only thing that slowed them down was turning the page! This clearly shows that those who scored 350 had a nat-ural talent and with the additional knowledge and skills they were able to turn that talent into Strength!

How do we develop these natural talents? How do we turn them into Strengths? Let’s talk about that! Join us for STRENGTHS CONVERSATIONS on the fourth Monday of each month starting in January. Stay tuned for details!

Why does the priest kiss the altar? We kiss things that we love. In American culture, we tend to kiss people less than in many other European cultures, but still a kiss is a sign of love and it’s not strictly romantic (think of a mother to her child). As Catholics, we understand that the ordained ministers (bishops, priests, and deacons) have a special role to play in the life of the Church, during liturgy they act in a special way in the person of Christ. This is why the priest doesn’t say “this is Jesus’ body,” but “this is my body,” or “Jesus absolves you from your sins,” but “I absolve you from your sins.” This is why the Church will speak of those in holy orders acting in persona Chris-ti, ‘in the person of Christ.” This does not mean that those in Holy Orders are Jesus -- but that that they have been given a unique and particular identification with Jesus for his Holy People. As I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, the altar also represents Christ. As Catholics, we consecrate altars that represent the “the rock who is Christ” in our churches (see 1 Cor 10:4). Many of you may re-member the consecration of our altar at Saint Michael Parish by Archbishop Sartain. We place relics in altars because saints have

a particular connection to Christ: they have united themselves to Him in a unique way and now live with Him forever. Altars are more than just tables! This action of kissing the altar is a unique way to show both the importance of the altar and also to show that those in Holy Orders are configured to Christ, especially during the Mass in a particular way.

EXODUS 90 STARTS JANUARY 13 (ENDS EASTER SUNDAY)

MEN: Are you looking for more in life? Do you often find yourself bored, uninterested in life, consumed by technology, distracted? Exodus is an intense 90-day period of prayer, fraternity, and aestheti-cism. You and a group of like-minded brothers journey together through the book of Exodus, following Moses and the Israelites as they break their chains of slavery. Developed as a seminarian formation tool, Exodus 90 has gained reputation globally as a focused way to regain freedom in the lives of thousands of men. So far this year, 35 men at SMP have journeyed through Exodus 90, afterward sharing quotes like:

"I knew I needed something to break me out of feeling trapped in everyday life stress...I had no idea that this 90 days would so radically transform my life. My marriage re-awakened, my faith re-ignited, and I feel like I finally have such clarity on what God's been dreaming up for my life..."New fraternities are forming now, and an informational meeting is happening on Saturday, January 11 at 3pm in the Frassati Room.
