Friday 17th March
Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
Ahead of our new Sixth Form welcoming students in September this year, I am delighted to announce
that Ms Orchin and Ms Oliver have both been promoted to Deputy Directors of the Sixth form along-
side their respective English and History teaching roles. Also promoted is Mr Conlon, Head of Science
who becomes the Assistant Principal for Key Stage 4: Curriculum & Assessment.
We also bid a fond farewell to Ms Harris; PA to the
Principal, who has been with us for many years, and
wish her and her family all the very best for their
move to the West Country. Replacing Ms Harris, we
welcome Mr Dunscombe who commences after the
Easter break. Lastly, we welcome Ms Gbolade, Ms
Proctor and Ms Choudhury to our Administrative
team, led by Mrs Robinson who joined us last week.
March 14th saw us celebrate Pi Day with the Pupil Council
Assembly Committee leading the assembly with a Pi com-
petition to see who could remember the most digits as
Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorise. A
number of fun and educational maths activities were held
throughout the day including teachers being ‘Pied’ in the
playground after school!
The new Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) cycle commenced this
week with a full complement of pupils. We whole hearted-
ly support the D of E scheme, which is an internationally
recognised foundation that enriches the pupils social and cultural capital and provides them an oppor-
tunity to express themselves outside the Academy. The first Silver expedition will start on 23rd March
on the North Downs, led by Mr Brooks and Ms Davidson.

BBC SCHOOL REPORT 2017
Thursday was BBC School Report Day 2017. Pupils
produced two videos specials; Trump State Visit and
Teenagers and Technology interviewing teachers, pu-
pils and even café patrons along Northcote Road. Well
done to Megan Barbour, Hawrah Lule, Poppy
Ward, Harmony Ramos and Chloe Shepherd for
boldly stepping in front of the camera as part of this
great initiative.
The videos can be found on the Bolingbroke Website:

Make sure you take a look!
WORLD BOOK DAY 2017 Bolingbroke Academy embraced World Book Day 2017 with
gusto and this year the teaching body pulled out all the stops with
their costumes!
Each Department chose a theme and dressed up as the different
characters from books within that theme. It is then up to the
pupils to guess which character each teacher is portraying and the
name of the book.
The Science department chose Farm Animals which the pupils
correctly identified teachers as characters from George Orwell’s
Animal Farm. The English department elected to have a Shake-
spearean theme with Ms Tuckett as Shakespeare himself, and Ms
Brown was quickly identified as Lady Macbeth. The Maths de-
partment created a Yellow Brick Road in the corridor providing
much amusement and a very quick guess from pupils that Ms
Garne was Dorothy and Mr Ali the Wizard of Oz!
Humanities took on an epic adventure as characters from Lord
of the Rings. And the Music department looked ready to solve a
supernatural mystery as Scooby-Doo and his friends.
Civitas doors were available to be decorated by the pupils and
Shakir Walker-Dehaney led the intense efforts to recreate Dr
Who’s tardis – a brilliant and very bold result!
World Book Day is a lot of fun however, it also provides pupils
with the opportunity to learn about new books; as Halle Lauryn-
Frimpong said “I have seen so many new books that I will add to
my reading list; it was such a fun day but also really interesting.”

JUST GIVING PAGES P.E. AND MUSIC
P.E.
Many pupils enjoy table tennis whether it's in core/GCSE PE lessons, so-
cially at lunch/break times, or during enrichment. With the growing num-
ber of pupils at the Academy our current equipment needs replacing/
upgrading to sustain this offering.
We had 11 tables, we currently only have 5 working tables and our aim is
to raise funds to provide for 12 tables. Please help us support the pupils
and PE Department with providing much needed table tennis tables."

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK
8Kingston Reading group were reading The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman. Inspired by the story and our local sur-
rounds Ms Dobbs took her reading group on an artistic jour-
ney. The results were wonderful and Ms Dobbs decided to
let the author know what an impact his stories had had on
the group.
A letter to Neil Gaiman, from Miss Dobbs reading group
Year 8:
Dear Neil,
I love my reading group. Fin, Hana, Marwan, Ben, Ruth, Tom, Muhis, Asal and Louis. We
are a mixed bag, with strong personalities and opinions. We’ve got the deep thinker, the
speed reader, the reluctant reader (but keen listener), and Asal, who is a gem (though I
think she loses her book or planner five times each day). At the end of last term I read your
short story, ‘How To Talk To Girls At Parties’, the faces around the table said it all. The girls
were enthralled, the boys realised it doesn't get any easier. Brilliant.
So naturally, this term it was time to get out The Graveyard Book. We read as a group eve-
ry day I’m in and we do occasionally get really in to character. My personal favourite is Liza
Hempstock.
We started to drift a little a few weeks ago, so I took them out to our little local graveyard
on Bolingbroke Grove. It is a hidden world of ivy and angels. I know that a few of our gang
had never been in a graveyard, let alone be encouraged to play and
chat and touch gravestones! Laid to rest are some wonderful South
London Victorian souls with names that make me hope they
achieved their dreams. It was fun, we got some great wax rubbings
which are now on our wall on the second floor. Oh, and we ate
warm croissants. I am reminded of that often.
I had been promising to do some charcoal art with them and we
managed to squeeze a 40 minute session in yesterday. Those who
could, unfortunately a few missed it, came down to art and we
rubbed and drew and smudged with charcoal. We talked about the
book as we sketched, the atmosphere was special and warm and Muhis made something
beautiful. His is the dreamy spectre with the moon and the two gravestones. I also loved
that everyone wanted to use the charcoal to get the image of Bod fading. I find Ruth’s Man
Jack leaning on the lamp post perfectly menacing.
They are proud of their work. And I am proud of them.
Miss Dobbs
Neil Gaiman sent a reply and commented, “Such a wonderful email to get: I love the
atmosphere in all of the art. The smudgy charcoal effects are beautiful, and they have
such strong senses of design and atmosphere. Every picture feels like The Graveyard
Book. What a talented bunch of people.”
JACK PETCHEY REGIONAL FINALS
Ms Orchin
On Wednesday 7th March, Megan Rowland did Bolingbroke proud
when she courageously competed in the regional finals of the Jack
Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Along with 15 other competitors
from across the region, she took to the stage in front of hundreds
to deliver a passionate speech in protest of normality named,
“NOrmal”.
She spoke with strength, composure and skill - WELL DONE MEGAN! A superb achievement.

MUSIC AND DRAMA
YEAR 10 WICKED TRIP By Jada Orlebar-Earle, Orlagh Roberts and Jasmine Haqq
On Wednesday 1st march 10Zimmer were given the Great opportunity to watch the musical 'Wicked'
at the Apollo Victoria Theatre as it is one of our set works
this year.
'Wicked' is a musical based on the story of the Wizard of Oz.
It follows the lives of two teenage girls who have contrasting
personalities. However their relationship grows and they soon
become best friends; until love, a wizard and lies get in be-
tween them.
The musical was jam-packed: there were wicked songs, fan-
tabulous dancing and many plot twisters.
The atmosphere was immensely cheerful witch added to the
experience.
Overall, we found the musical magical and wonderful, and one
that will not be forgotten.
We hope you got the puns!
YEAR 8 TRIP TO GLOBE THEATRE
On Wednesday 8th March a group of 30 Year 8 Bolingbroke Academy students attended Shake-
speare’s Globe to watch a performance of The Taming of the Shrew. With tickets marked
‘groundling’ the students were both intrigued and excited at the prospect of standing up in the the-
atre. Before the show began the students were given the opportunity to speak to the actors as
they wandered around The Yard. They were keen to ask questions about the show, the Globe
Theatre and life as an actor. Michael Fenner, who plays Baptista in the show gave the students lots
of tips on how to become an actor.
The show stayed true to its original storyline whilst adding in modern day humour, singing and
dancing. The students particularly enjoyed the prospect of interacting with the characters on stage;
cheering, booing and singing along! The character of Gremio riding around the stage on his mobili-
ty scooter whilst dancing to Jessie J was a highlight for lots of the pupils.
One pupil who came on the trip said, "I re-
ally enjoyed watching The Taming of the
Shrew because it was interesting and the
acting was amazing. The director managed
to include modern songs into the play and it
was really funny. The actors were really
friendly to us before the show too. I am
really happy that I was able to go."
Everyone who attended the trip had a fan-
tastic time and many were given the oppor-
tunity to visit Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
for the first time, making it a very exciting
and enjoyable day for all!

PARENT COUNCIL
Looking at re-branding the Parent Council. Possibly re-name The Friends of
Bolingbroke. This has a more inclusive feel – parents & carers, community,
prospective parents….. Deborah Goodman (doing one day a week mktg for the school) is working on
the school website to make it easier to navigate.
PC recruitment: Looking for new people to join the PC!
Current members have already served over the two—year term. Looking to broaden the group; as a new school there still is lots to do! Exciting
opportunity to get more parents involved.
Stan Faure has come on board as Vice-Chair. Stan has been a BBA parent since the school started; his daughter is in year 11
and about to take the school’s first set of GCSEs! He has a child in year 8 and
one still at primary school. PC want to open-up the committee for new people to join and have a real im-
pact on the school.
Stan is keen to secure corporate sponsorship for the school.
All. Please send any suggestions
through to PC @ parentcoun-
All. Please get in touch if you are inter-
ested as job specs are available.
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION EVENING (KS3)
The general consensus was that the meeting was beneficial. Many parents had been alarmed by the number of REDs received in their chil-
dren’s end-of-term assessment report with no clear communication from the
school in advance of receipt to explain the new changes. The school had posted
something in the Courageous Hound but it was buried within the newsletter
which was received/read after the reports arrived home. It has been requested that reports are received in advance of the holiday and
not on last day of term. Slides of the presentation by Daisy have been requested and will be sent
through to all via civitas reps on receipt.
CT Core Team recognise they need to
review current system and move away
from the gap on doing great and still
getting a red.
School to advise.
Stan to request KS3 assessment slides

The school are undertaking a review with parents, staff and pupils to provide a

LOCKERS
Parents raised their concerns over standards and availability of lockers, particu-
larly for year 7 pupils. Also there is no-where to hang up coats? Justine con-
firmed she would raise at next LGB meeting.
School to advise whether some of the
faulty lockers can be replaced and if
space could be found for additional
lockers.
LOST PROPERTY
Plan is for the LP team to meet and sort all lost property termly. All. Please help by naming all uniform
