Hound Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
Welcome to the second Courageous Hound of the year. Speech Day was a really special day in two very different
but equally enjoyable parts. It was a real honour to welcome Ian Hislop to the academy to speak to the older
pupils and present the awards in the morning session. Before the event I spoke to him about his school days at
the prestigious Ardingly College and how at Bolingbroke we were seeking to ensure that every pupil has access
to the same range of opportunities as pupils at the top private schools. Having spoken to a number of our staff
and pupils while touring the academy and enjoying family dining with Year 7, he was certainly impressed. The
afternoon event was also very successful with the visit of our local MP and the exceptional efforts of our younger
pupils recognised. Congratulations to Smyth for their victory in the House Cup competition. Thank you to all
parents, carers, governors and friends who attended these events.
Thank you also to the parents of our Class of 2022 pupils who attended Wednesday’s Parent Information
Evening. I am sorry we did not quite calculate the time it would take to deliver all the information we wanted to
as well as answering all the excellent questions that parents had, so the event did overrun somewhat! The slides
from the event are on the website and please do not hesitate to get in touch if there are any questions that you
still have, whether about curriculum, ethos, uniform, sports fixtures or enrichment.
Kind Regards,
Mr Speight

ANNUAL SPEECH DAY & PRIZE GIVING 2015
Congratulations to all our pupils who were nominated or won prizes at our Annual Speech Day & Prize Giving on
Friday 18th September 2015. As the school grows in size and stature this year we held two events at St Michael’s
Church to celebrate the success of our pupils (full list of winners & nominees on page 3).
At the morning senior school event we were honoured to welcome Mr Ian Hislop, writer, journalist and
broadcaster as our guest speaker. The event began as any Bolingbroke event does with a rousing recital of the
school mantra and then we were ready for the celebrations to begin. Mr Hislop gave a fantastic speech with the
unifying theme of embracing challenge. We were given anecdotes of Mr Hislop’s own education and how the pupils
at Bolingbroke Academy have the potential and opportunities to go on and achieve even more. After an interesting
question and answer session we were ready for the prize winners to be revealed. A special mention must go out to
Erskine House who won this year’s Quizzitch Cup and Smyth House who won the highly sought after House
Shield.
In the afternoon we were ready for the junior school event. This gave us an
opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2021 during the
academic year 2014-15. Once again we were privileged to have another very
special guest. For the afternoon event we welcomed Jane Ellison, MP for
Battersea. The theme of embracing challenge was also at the centre of this occa-
sion. Our speaker provided us with a motivating speech about how Bolingbroke
and its own history is an inspiring story of challenge. Jane Ellison was also able to
share with us the stories of inspirational men and women she meets through her
role as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health. This year
the Ever Courageous Cup, donated by the Neighbourhood Schools Campaign
Group, was won by a pupil from the Class of 2021 who thoroughly deserved this
accolade.
Thank you to all the Governors, Parents and Carers who were able to attend and
support this very special event.

YEAR 10 GCSE PRODUCT DESIGN TRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSEUM
By Ms Houghton It has been a great start to the academic year by taking our budding year 10 Product Designers to the Science Mu-
seum. Firstly, they explored the Engineer your Future exhibition, an interactive experience for teens thinking about
their futures. Pupils played Rugged Rovers and Futureville; tested their brains’ ability to think about the big picture
and watched a short film. It was really impressive that Jack Jenkin, Nick Whyte and Harry Ward designed the top
Rover of the Day!
After a picnic lunch, our group was booked into Launchpad, the most popular gallery at the museum. It is packed
with over 50 interactive exhibits for them to explore, plus a lucky opportunity to watch the Rocket Show in which
Nick Whyte and Rhiannon Fuller volunteered to take part in a lively demo.
It was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see Design and Technology in action; particularly from an applied maths
and physics perspective. They learnt a lot while having a very enjoyable day.

FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MR MURPHY (SCIENCE TEACH-
ER - ERSKINE HOUSE)
Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Mr Murphy and I am originally from Dublin in the Republic of
Ireland. I went to an all Irish speaking secondary school and graduated
from Dublin City University.
Why teach?
I always wanted to work with young people and I love Science so being a Science teacher is the perfect job
for me. My Mum is a teacher so it must be in the blood!
And Finally…..What's your favourite Film?
Forrest Gump
FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MS AUSTIN
(PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS LEAD TEACHER - ERSKINE HOUSE)
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2009, with a degree in
Theology and Religious Studies. I really enjoyed learning about other peo-
ple and how they make choices, and that led me to working with young
people. I worked for the Prince’s Trust, but decided that I wanted to share
my enthusiasm for Philosophy and Ethics… and here we are!
Why teach?
Because every day, every hour is different. That’s what makes it fun.
What are your hopes for Philosophy and Ethics?
I want to create a department that challenges and engages students in the big ethical and philosophical ques-
tions that affect us every day. Philosophy and Ethics promotes community cohesion by helping pupils to learn
to understand others and value diversity whilst also promoting shared values and an awareness of human
rights
And Finally…..What's your favourite Film?
The Freedom Writers- sums up why I went into teaching!
FIVE MINUTES WITH……MS GANN (FOOD TECHNOLOGY TEACHER - KLEIN HOUSE)
Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Ms Gann and I studied Human Nutrition at the University of
Chester. I am from Gloucestershire which is in the West of England and
have always had an interest on the effect that food has on the body.
Why teach?
Learning how to cook is a skill for life and it can be easy to cook
nutritious meals. I think it is great when pupils start the lesson with the
raw ingredients and end the lesson with a product that they can take
home and be proud of making.
What are your hopes for the Food Science department?
To create a strong department that allows for pupils to show confidence, leadership and teamwork. As well
as the skills needed to cook, the scientific knowledge behind each practical is also essential. I also hope to get
pupils to take part in the local young chef competitions.
And Finally…..What's your favourite Food?
Anything Italian! Pizza and pasta dishes are amongst many of my favourites.

THIS WEEK IN THE LIBRARY
By Ms Jones
This week we have been looking at the topic of Refugees, Migrants and Asylum Seekers. Thinking beyond the
headlines, using fiction, poetry quotes and photographs.
Free bird,
Free bird.
What good luck,
you have.
What good chance,
that it is your right
to fly freely,
with no document,
with no passport,
to pass through
all continents,
beach of Australia to Ivory Coast.
From ‘Free Bird’ - A poem by Amasu Girma
Just some of the books we have in the library around this topic:
Hidden by Miriam Halahmy
The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr
Abela by Berlie Doherty
The Weight of Water by Sarah Crossan
Where I belong by Gillian Cross
Now is the Time for Running by Michael Williams
Close to the Wind by Jon Williams
The Unforgotten Coat by Frank Cottrell-Boyce
Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah
Looking at the Stars by Jo Cotterill
We can all be refugees
Sometimes it only takes a day,
Sometimes it only takes a handshake
Or a paper that is signed.
We all came from refugees
Nobody simply just appeared,
Nobody's here without a struggle,
And why should we live in fear
Of the weather or the troubles?
We all came here from somewhere.
From ‘We Refugees’ – A poem by Benjamin
Zephaniah
Coming soon:
“Goth Girl and the Wuthering Fright”
Chris Riddell’s latest book is jam packed with brilliant drawings and funny
characters. Ada Goth sets off on another adventure with new characters,
new friends and new conundrums to be solved. A ‘Literary Dog Show’
brings all sorts of odd characters, with their equally odd dogs to Ghastly
Hall and madness ensues. Dogs, word play and drawings galore!
I would recommend this book to all pupils who like quirky, crazy and
unpredictable stories – this is definitely for you!

MATHS CORNER
NEWS FROM MATHS THIS FORTNIGHT
The Maths Team have really enjoyed getting stuck into lessons in the first few weeks of term. Years 7 and 8 are
both focussing on number topics, with year 7 getting to grips with place value and Year 8 starting to look at num-
ber properties. Year 9 have had their first introduction to linear graphs, which is a key concept for lots of future
learning at GCSE and beyond. Year 10 have risen to the challenge interpreting indices in their first few weeks of
GCSE
We really appreciate the hard work that goes on at home to support pupils’ learning in Mathematics. Practising
topics away classroom is a key routine to embed learning. ALL pupils will have one written and one online
homework task per week. Some classes will also have daily practice: Times Table Rockstars booklets for years 7
and 8, and GCSE Workbook questions for year 10.
It’s not too late to sign up for the Parent Workshop on Tuesday 29th September, 6-7pm. This will be a
hands-on workshop, looking particularly at some of the websites that we use to support learning in Maths. It will
also be a great opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. Email
[email protected] to book in.
Manga High – star performers
We’re currently 83rd in the UK September competition,
with one week left to go. Year 7 pupils will receive
their log in details next week – can they help give us a
boost?! Congratulations to our star performers…

medal earned is converted into house points for the
house competitions.

Parent Puzzle 2
A really easy challenge this week! All you have to
do is email Miss Donaldson a number.
The lowest positive integer (whole number)
will win.
The catch is… only unique answers count!
If any other parent emails the same num-
ber as you, your number will be wiped out.
What will your strategy be?
E-mail your solutions to this week’s parent puzzle to
r.donaldson@arkbolingbrokeacademy. Each correct
answer goes into the half termly draw to win maths
equipment for your child (and a treat for you!)
Don’t forget your child can log in to www.ttrockstars.com for
extra practice and fun competitions

Year 8 5 times table 3-5 times tables
Parent Puzzle 1: solution?
Thank you for your entries for the first parent puzzle, which asked: how many four digit numbers are there that
contain the number 5? We have enjoyed your suggestions – but at the time of going to print, there were no correct
answers! As we always say to the pupils, we love mistakes and think that wrong answers can teach us as much as right
answers. So, rather than publishing a solution this week, here is a clue:
Imagine the 5 is in the thousands column. How many possible numbers are there?
Now imagine the 5 is in the hundreds column. How many possible numbers are there? How many of those numbers have you
already counted? Keep going for the tens and ones columns…
