Hound Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
Welcome to the first edition of the Courageous Hound for the new year. I hope you will enjoy reading it every
two weeks as much as I do. Considering the regularity of this newsletter, I am always bowled over at how much
it contains, testament to the quantity and range of our enrichment activities, sports fixtures, visits and visitors.
I look forward to welcoming as many parents and carers as possible to our Annual Speech Day and Prizegiving at
St Michael’s Church on Friday 18th September. We are very honoured to have two such special guests for this
event, but of course the real stars are the pupils nominated and chosen as winners for our awards. Please ensure
you have emailed Mrs Harris if you are able to attend.
While it is customary for Ms Edis to introduce new members of staff with a detailed profile, with 18 new teachers
and 6 new non-teaching staff joining us this September, this would extend over quite a few pages! We are plan-
ning a more gradual approach over the next few editions. Please see later in this issue where we introduce our
new Head of PE, Dominic Jones, our new Head of Music, Ms Breckon, and our new Drama Teacher,
Mr Kalorkoti.
On behalf of the Bolingbroke community I would like to close by giving our congratulations to Mrs Flanagan
(nee Ms Blacklock – Head of Humanities), Ms Rose (Lead LSA) and Mrs Brookes (Assistant Principal) who got
married over the summer break. We wish them all many years of happiness as they start this exciting new
chapter in their lives.
Yours Sincerely,
Mr R Speight
Volume. 4 Issue. 1
Friday 11th September 2015
It really has been a wonderful start to the year. Following
our Staff Induction Week, we welcomed returning and new
pupils on Monday 7th with an action packed two days of
induction activities. The Class of 2019 Key Stage 4 launch at
the Twickenham Stoop organised by Mr Kerby was a great
success, with England international rugby players, round the
world adventurers and Ms Edis amongst the special guests.
The Class of 2020 enjoyed an inspiring visit to Corpus
Christi college in Cambridge, while the Class of 2021 were
on site so that that they could welcome the Class of 2022
in the customary fashion. Our new Year 7s had an intensive
day, getting to know the school routines, exploring our
Be Bold Values and learning the mantra in preparation for
their Tie Ceremony at the end of the day.

KEY STAGE FOUR IS LAUNCHED
By Mr Kerby
Bolingbroke’s founding pupils made another slice of history this week, as Key Stage 4 officially launched in the shad-
ow of Twickenham national stadium, at the home of Harlequins Rugby Football Club. On an uncharacteristically
balmy September day, the pupils reconvened, reinvigorated and refreshed from a summer at home, to seize what
proved to be a very special day. Pupils were given a rallying call to seize every opportunity from our very own Ms
Edis, who visited to speak to the pupils at the Stoop, encouraging each and every one of the Class of 2019 to take
on challenges, with the examples of her beautiful new daughter and puppy as examples to learn from!
Mr Kerby led the way for the pupils to take a leap of faith as they enter the unchartered waters of GCSE’s. An im-
passioned speech set about identifying the priority for the next two years, and setting the stall out for the future. In
what will prove to be an exciting time for all concerned, there was a sense of optimism for what the future brings,
and the unbridled potential that exists within the year group. As welcoming hosts, the RFU brought a very special
representative to the event- England Captain and World Cup winner La Toya Mason was on hand to impart the
lessons of a decorated international career, and the links to our own BE BOLD values.
Prior to lunch, pupils completed a Dragons Den style activity, in which they were tasked with creating an inventive
way to benefit the community and promote sport. Highlights came from a Rugby Rap, A fantastic Rugby App, and a
Google inspired mini game from a group of our very own entrepreneurs.
Pupils had the opportunity to get behind the Rugby All Schools Campaign under the twitter hashtags
#Carrythemhome #Celebratingrugby and #Weartherose. As lunch was enjoyed by all, pupils were set a unique
challenge- to learn the words to the famous rugby anthem of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. With a 15 minute prepara-
tion of the newly assembled year 10 choir, all staff and pupils assembled in the Stoop stands, and conducted a rous-
ing rendition, filmed for the RFU for potential use at the Rugby World Cup (as well as a lovely advertisement for
our pupils on our website). A proud moment and one that epitomised the attitude of pupils on the day- represent-
ing the Academy and each other with a pride and maturity that was fitting for the occasion.
The keynote speech of the day was delivered by Alastair Humphreys, an intrepid explorer, who inspired all with
the account of his 3 year cycle around the globe, row across the Atlantic with a stranger, and hike on foot around
the M25 commuter belt. Hopefully the lessons, morals and advice provided to pupils will be an asset in the coming
months and years.
An invaluable day for all involved in the event, which showcased the very best of the class of 2019. A special thank
you must go to all the RFU staff who worked alongside the Bolingbroke Academy staff on the day to make it such a
success!

YEAR 9 TRIP TO CAMBRIDGE
By Ms Robinson
After last year’s successful trip to Murray Edwards College at the University of Cambridge the new year 9 pupils
travelled to Cambridge to visit Corpus Christi college. The college very kindly allowed us to use a lecture theatre
where we launched their GCSE foundation year. We listened to an inspirational speech from Mrs Brooks about
overcoming challenges and discovered the content of the curriculum for year 9 maths and English.
A task on the coach journey for pupils was for them to read about life at the University of Cambridge as well as
learning about the history of the university and specifically Corpus Christi College.
After a picnic on the Backs we split into groups for a walking tour of Cambridge where we visited a number of
significant buildings in Cambridge. We were very impressed with the enthusiasm and questions from the pupils and
the day was full of productive conversations about planning for the future.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Mr Jones and I graduated from University of West of England
which is top for Rugby. I am from Somerset originally. At 16 I had to
choose between two sports Rugby or Football and I decided to focus on
Rugby.
Why teach?
Because I love what I do. I tried other professions in sport and the health
industry but always wanted to teach.
What are your hopes for the PE department?
To create a well rounded and strong department. I want to make sure we are very competitive and we have
lots of fixtures coming up so we can showcase our skills. I want Bolingbroke to be number 1 for sport!
And Finally…..What's your favourite Film?
The Goonies!
FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MS BRECKON (HEAD OF MUSIC - VERBIEST HOUSE)
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I have always loved music from a very young age., playing piano, flute and
singing in a choir. I studied Music at Cambridge and tried other jobs in
Arts Management before embarking on my teaching career.
What do you love about teaching?
I love seeing pupils in a different environment than sitting behind a desk.
Its wonderful to see pupils being creative and working as a team.
What are your hopes for the Music department?
I have BIG DREAMS! Alongside the Drama team I plan on putting on a big show and possibly an Arts Festival.
There are going to be lots of opportunities for those pupils interested in music.
And Finally…..What's your favourite Film?
The Beach
FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MR KALORKOTI (DRAMA TEACHER - SMYTH HOUSE)
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I was very lucky as I got to study Acting at the LAMDA drama school, I
then went on to study teaching at UCL. I can't wait to get stuck into life
at Bolingbroke. Its been a great first week getting to meet all the pupils.
What do you love about teaching?
I love being able to share something that I really enjoy. Its great to see
pupils come out of their shell and open a new side. I can't wait to be
part of Bolingbroke's first big school performance.
And Finally…..What's your favourite Film?

On the 24th July, two of our Music Scholars had the incredible opportunity to sing at St Paul’s Cathedral. The
magnificent Baroque church designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1673 dominates the London skyline, and their
world famous Men’s and Boys’ Choirs sing services every day. During the Summer when the St Pauls Choir is
on holiday, choirs from around the world and the UK sing the daily services (if they are of a high enough stand-
ard!). One of Miss Kirby-Ashmore’s choirs – The Dunstable Priory Choir - were invited to sing at the
Cathedral, and she asked Moniece Mullings and Arthur Kergall to join her Choir for this special occasion. They
spent weeks learning the extremely difficult music, and ended up singing to an audience of hundreds!
Miss Kirby-Ashmore is so proud of them, and is looking forward to taking them back again one day.
PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS
Private music lessons will be starting soon. The timetables will be displayed in the music department and
invoices will be handed to the children in their first lesson.
There are spaces available for year 7 pupils who learnt an instrument in primary school and wish to con-
tinue, or they want to start learning the piano. Please contact Mrs Riley in the music department for an
information letter (closing date Wednesday 16th September).

YEAR 7 END OF YEAR PGL TRIP
FRIDAY 17TH – SATURDAY 18TH JULY 2015
By Ms Nobes
At the end of last academic year, pupils from Year 7 celebrated the end of the school year with a residential trip to
PGL in Liddington. It was arranged as an opportunity not just to focus on the successes of the pupils’ first year at
Bolingbroke Academy but also put Duke of Edinburgh skills, such as problem solving and teamwork, into action.
Across the two days, pupils participated in four activities: zip wire, archery, abseiling and survivor. This was along-
side a fantastic disco, where pupils showed off their dancing skills, an excellent array of food and chances for free
time on the field.
Abseiling and zip wire proved the toughest activities, requiring pupils to display great bravery in order to climb and
jump from the centre’s custom built towers. Many pupils found themselves facing a fear of heights yet still partici-
pated in the activity. A special well done to Sonny Lloyd, Eddie Cornwall-Jones and Kamal Farrah, among others,
who perfectly illustrated the Be Bold values of bravery and determination.
Whereas abseiling felt like a controlled descent, the zip wire encapsulated a high speed thrill ride. Only some pupils
had the nerve to try the ‘angel’: a move which requires the participant to jump from the tower backwards and
using no hands. Credit must go to Scarlett McGill who tried this on her first turn!
A favourite activity of the pupils was the chance to channel
Katniss Everdeen during Archery. Pupils were taught how
to shoot arrows safely as well as acting as a retrieval team
between turns. A steady hand, accuracy and control were
vital for success in this activity and all pupils approached
the challenge with impressive resilience.
Finally, Survivor was a test of teamwork, problem solving
and endurance as teams had to work out how to survive
after a plane crash in a race against time. Choosing key
resources, building shelters and starting a fire were some
of the skills pupils were able to put to the test.
All in all, the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by staff and pupils. A big thank you to Mrs Flanagan, Ms Bessa, Mr
Brooks, Mr Rowe, Ms Luetchford, Ms Lahai-Taylor, Mr Sillah, Ms Mayotte, Ms Konneradt and Ms Nobes who ac-
companied the children and even joined in with some of the activities! As for the pupils, every single one was a
credit to Bolingbroke Academy in their attitude and behaviour. They were an absolute pleasure to spend time with
across the two days.
The only complaint: next time, let’s go for longer!

MATHS CORNER
NEWS FROM MATHS THIS FORTNIGHT
The Maths Department are really excited to welcome Miss Davidson and Mr Horley to the team. Both are really
excellent teachers with a passion for mathematics and are already sharing lots of new ideas.
This year sees our year 10 classes embark upon their GCSE courses. They are doing so at a particularly exciting
time as the new GCSE Maths is being launched ready for the first examinations in 2017. We are continuing our
work with Mathematics Mastery at GCSE level and this year will be a Pilot School for their new Key Stage 4 pro-
gramme. For more information about Mathematics Mastery, please see their website: http://
www.mathematicsmastery.org/.
We’re really pleased that two of our year 10 pupils, Jack Jenkin and Theo Rooney, have secured places on the
GCSE Enrichment Programme at Kings Maths School. This is an amazing opportunity to take their mathematical
learning to the next level, and delve deeper into some challenging problems.
We are really appreciative of the work that goes on at home to help pupils make outstanding progress in Maths.
To support you, we will be running a Parents/Carers Maths Workshop on Tuesday 29th September, (6-
7pm.) We will have a go on the websites that we use – such as Manga High and Times Table Rockstars – as well
as looking at what being part of the Maths Mastery programme means to us as a school. All parents are welcome
but parents of year 7 are particularly encouraged to attend. You can sign up to this either at the Class of 2022
Information Evening on Wednesday 24th September or by e-mailing [email protected].

we commence the next stage of our long term plan- an exciting time for sport at Bolingbroke Academy.
I’d like to thank all parents and pupils for their support and enthusiasm in developing Physical Education at the Academy
