Rationale for the use of Technology

Modern technology has become almost essential in our daily lives. This is especially true for today’s youth as they grow up learning how to use it on a daily basis. We as teachers would not be using all available resources when educating our students if we do not incorporate these technologies somehow. I want to explore the internet and other new forms of technology we can use to stimulate our students.

Using internet content

● The information obtained for this presentation was well researched and the validity of the information is up to date.

● I have provided links on the pages to click and take you directly to the referred material.

● All the material on this presentation is used for the purpose of teaching Biology/DNA and is cited on the resource section or footnotes.

Blog Websites

What a great way to spark a fresh new dialogue about a subject. Blogs are typically subject specific sites that look to share their interests and ideas with others.

Podcasts

If you have never looked into a podcast then you are missing out. They are great informational videos or voice recording that can be used at any time. http://www.dnalc.org/resources/dnatoday/

Youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwibgNGe4aY

Youtube is so much more than just music videos it also contains instructional videos that can be helpful in learning. Check out this great Youtube channel ‘Stated Clearly’ that helps you understand the basics in science subjects including DNA and genes.

Internet Resources 1

National Human Genome Research Institute(click this link to visit website)

- NHGRI was created to help map the human genome and provide advances in biomedical research

- The site has a great kids section to help further their education

Internet Resources 2

Teaching Channel (click this link to visit website)

- The Teaching Channel website is dedicated to providing helpful ways to improve teaching lessons and student participation.

- This link is an instructional video that shows students how to put together DNA & RNA.

Internet Resources 3

Serendip Studio (click this link to visit website)

- “Serendip Studio, a digital ecosystem fueled by serendipity, was founded in 1994, and exists to facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary, boundaryless exploration.”

- This link contains many ways to teach biology with hands on activities for high school students.

Inspiration 9.2Inspiration 9.2 is a great resource for creating visual worksheets for student. You can be creative and bring the material to life! (click link to visit)

Look at this sample used to show the different proteins that build DNA.

Teaching Materials 1

Biology Corner is great website for material to help teach DNA and more.

- Check this DNA coloring worksheet- Your students can also try this crossword

(click the links to visit the site)

Teaching Materials 2

Lesson Plan Inc. has a wide variety of lesson plans. Some of these lesson plans also include activities like:

DNA extracting from your cheek cells. (click this link to visit website)

* This activity should be done in a lab with proper supervision.

Teaching Materials 3Access Excellence has great teaching material for Biology and DNA. (click this link to visit website)- check out this fun hands on activity with candy that

shows you how to build DNA!

Subject Specific Resource

I previously mentioned the podcasts from the DNA Learning Center but this website is dedicated to providing much more.Mission Statement:“The mission of the DNA Learning Center is to prepare students and families to thrive in the gene age. We envision a day when all elementary students are exposed to principles of genetics and disease risk; when all high school students have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments with DNA; and when all families have access to genetic information they need to make informed health care choices.”

As a teacher this website could help with field trips, workshops, partnerships and much more.

Uses of internet

Visit Vocabulary.com for words your students need help spelling or definitions. - They have created sections for science and test prep

key words. example: DNALearn the basics using Tour of Basic Genetics- helps students not only learn about DNA but

hereditary,chromosomes, genes, traits and proteins.

Web 2.0

Edmodo is a great way to share lessons and homework with student. - Teacher and students both create login

information and have access to a specific domain where the class can interact.

App for that!

You have heard the popular phase and its true they even

have an app to help you with DNA. Gene Screen - An app with chapters for different topics in genetics.

App for that!

Now its time for an app that helps you learn but is set up like an interactive game!DNA Damage - Match the correct sequence of letters to help build a strand of DNA.

Slideshare

Did you enjoy this presentation well I have uploaded it to the Slideshare website for your entertainment anytime. Share it with friends

and help them explore DNA too!
