Copper prices ended lower on Thursday

Gold hit record highs on Thursday as the resignation of Portugal's prime minister ahead

of a summit of EU leaders on the European economy this week revived jitters over the

euro zone sovereign debt crisis. Copper prices turned lower on Thursday, falling from

almost three-week highs after new orders for U.S. manufactured goods fell

unexpectedly last month, hinting at slowing activity in the world's largest economy.
