Unit 8 Coldplay How many members are there in the band Coldplay? _______________________________________________________________ Coldplay is a very popular English guitar band. There are four members – Jon Buckland who plays the lead guitar, Will Champion who plays the drums, Guy Berryman who is the bass guitarist and Chris Martin who is the lead singer. They are from different parts of Britain but they all met when they were studying in London. Chris is probably more famous than the other three members in the band because his wife is the famous American actress Gwyneth Paltrow. They now have a baby girl called Apple! The group met at University College London in September 1996. They became good friends and all shared a real passion for music. At first, they didn’t want to be famous; they just wanted to play and write music and have a good time. They practised almost every night, wherever they could – in the bedroom, the bathroom, even in the park! They played some concerts in some small bars and pubs before they made their first album. Now that Coldplay are rich and famous, they do a lot of work for charity and play concerts to give money to people in other countries who need food and water. Their first album, ‘Parachutes’ was released in 1998 and it became very successful. Their famous songs are ‘Shiver’, ‘Yellow’, ‘For you’ etc. Many people compare them to the group Radiohead. Unit 5 Interpreting Dreams When do you think dream interpretation began? _______________________________________________________________ People began to interpret dreams in 3000-4000 B.C. In the past, people didn’t know the difference between dreams and reality. The Greeks and the Romans thought that people who interpreted dreams or had significant dreams were very special people. They thought that dreams were messages from the gods. In the early 19th century, people associated dreams with personal problems. Sigmund Freud revolutionized the study of dreams. Some interesting information: • During our life, we will spend six years dreaming! • Everybody dreams. Maybe you don’t remember your dream, but you always
dream something. • Dreams are necessary. People who do not dream don’t have sufficient
proteins. • Blind people dream. • The word dream means ‘joy and music’. • Men usually dream more about men. • Women dream about men and women. • Babies never dream about themselves. • Nightmares or bad dreams begin at about three years old. • We dream one or two hours every night. We often have four to seven
dreams in one night. • Five minutes after the dream we forget 50% of the content. After ten minutes

Unit 7 Tate Modern Where is the Tate Modern? _______________________________________________________________ The Tate Modern is London’s new gallery of twentieth century modern art. It opened in May 2000. It is on the south of the river Thames, opposite St. Paul’s Cathedral and next to The Globe Theatre. Unit 10 Mobile Telephone Technology What is the American word for a mobile telephone? _______________________________________________________________ Today millions of people use mobile phones. The Americans call them cellular phones or cell phones. They are fantastic gadgets because you can talk to anyone anywhere on the planet. The mobile phone is a recent invention. The basic concept of cellular phones began in 1947. Dr Martin Cooper who worked for Motorola is the inventor of the first modern mobile. He used the mobile phone for the first time in April 1973. In the past, mobile phones were very big, like bricks! Now they are smaller and have more functions. With a modern mobile phone you can use the calculator, play games, use the dictionary, send and receive e-mails, use the Internet, receive information about the weather or sport, listen to music or the radio. Unit 11 Britney Spears – An Agony Aunt? What is an Agony Aunt? _______________________________________________________________ An Agony Aunt is somebody who gives advice to young people who have got problems and write letters asking for a solution. Agony Aunts read these letters and respond to the young people’s problems, giving them advice. They usually work for newspapers, magazines and sometimes they even work on the Internet. Some Agony Aunts are famous people. One of these famous people who worked as an Agony Aunt is Gail Porter. Gail Porter is a British children’s television presenter and she became a temporary Agony Aunt on Internet for Valentine’s Day. Millions of young people wrote to her asking for advice and solutions to their problems with health, love and relationships. In September 2004, the famous, American pop star, Britney Spears, will become an Agony Aunt for BBC Online. The singer will give advice to fans on the So... teenagers’ website for two weeks. Britney Spears thinks that it is a fantastic way of demonstrating that pop stars are real people. She believes that most young people have the same experiences and problems and so she will be able to use her experience to give these young people some solutions to their problems.
