The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children, may be more an American ideal than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more varied than we had been led to believe, reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among different American groups. The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one- third of all current American families fit the traditional mould and another third consist of married couples who either have no children or have none still living at home. Of the final one -third, about 20 percent of the total number of American households are single people, usually women over sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total, consists of unmarried people who choose to live together; and the rest, about 7 percent are single, usually divorced parents, with at least one child. Today, these varied family types are typical, and therefore, normal.

MY AUNT

My aunt is one of those people who can talk to anyone about anything. If she goes to a party where she doesn't know any of the people, she just walks up to the first person that she sees and introduces herself. And yet she doesn't seem to talk about deeply important things like politics or religion. She always starts off with something very obvious like the other person's job. Very soon she's talking as if she's known the other person for years. I asked her once what her secret was. She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love to talk about themselves, so if you allow them to do so, it's very easy to keep a conversation going. You have to listen very carefully and ask questions. And you have to look interested, too. So don't keep looking at other things in the room while you're talking to someone. Another thing that I've noticed is that she only pays people compliments. She says: “I like your hair. Which hairdresser do you go to?” or “You look very well. Have you been on holiday?” Friendly messages like this seem to provide an easy way into a conversation.1. According to my aunt, the most important thing in a conversation was _____.

a. discussing b. looking c. listening d. speaking2. At parties where she does not know anybody, my aunt normally ______.

a. feels embarrassed and stays away from peopleb. comes over to the first person and introduces herselfc. asks people to introduces themselves to herd. sits alone and avoids talking to other people

3. My aunt thinks that it's very easy to keep a conversation going if you _______. a. let people hear about yourself b. talk about politics or religionc. let people talk about themselves d. ask people about their secrets

4. What should you NOT do when you have a conversation with someone? a. Looking very interested in his or her story b. Listening very carefully and asking questionsc. Paying him or her compliments d. Looking at other things in the room

VIETNAM'S EDUCATION SYSTEMVietnam's education system can be divided into 5 categories: pre-primary, primary, intermediate, secondary,

and higher education. Public kindergartens usually admit children from the age of 18 months to 5 years. Children at 4 or 5 years of

age are sometimes taught the alphabet and basic math. This level of education is only popular in major cities. Children normally start their primary education at the age of six. Education at this level lasts 5 years and it is

compulsory for all children. This compulsory education may be one of the reasons why, despite remaining a less developed country, the literate proportion of the country’s population is very high, over 90% on average.

Middle schools teach students from grade 6 to 9. This educational level is generalized throughout most of the country - except in very remote provinces, which expect to popularize and standardize middle education fully within the next few years. Intermediate is a non-compulsory schooling form in Vietnam.

Secondary education, which consists of grades 10, 11 and 12, is standardized in all major urban regions, but is not in rural provinces. After 3 high school-terms, all students must attend a graduation test. This test often consists of 6 subjects differently selected each year but has to contain the 3 compulsory ones: Foreign Language (mostly English), Mathematics and Literature. The Vietnamese government intends to merge this test with the university entrance test in 2009.

1. In Vietnam children can be taught basic math when they are ____.

a. 18 months old b. 4 months old c. 5 months old d. 4 or 5 years old

2. _____the literate proportion of the country’s population is very high.

4. The graduation test for all high school students often consists of 6 subjects which are ___

a. similar every other year b. the same every year.c. fixed years after years. d. differently selected every year.

BODY LANGUAGE. WHAT DOES IT SAY?

More than half of what we communicate is communicated not through words but through body language. This includes our posture, facial expressions, and gestures. Because body language is so important, you will want to know what yours is saying and how to interpret other people’s too. Here are some examples of body language and its meaning. ( Note: These meanings are for North America. Interpretations may differ a bit in other cultures).

A smile is a sign of friendliness and interest. But people sometimes smile just to be polite. To get another clue from people’s faces, notice their eyes. Friendliness and interest are expressed when a person’s eyes meet yours and then look away and meet yours again. A person who doesn’t look away is expressing a challenge. A person who doesn’t look at you is expressing lack of interest or is shy. Hand gestures can mean a person is interested in the conversation. But repeated movements – like tapping a pencil or tapping a foot - often mean the person is either

RESUMÉ

Without doubt, the most important part of any job application is the resumé. Along with a cover letter, it is the first impression a prospective employee makes on a potential employer. Therefore, it is important that a resumé provide as much relevant information as possible while remaining brief. A resumé should not be more than one full side of a sheet of paper. All too many candidates make the mistake of submitting several pages which, more often than not, don’t even get a second glance.

A resumé must be neatly printed, with at least three-quarter inch margins on all four sides. Use underlining, capital letters and asterisks to highlight important information. A resumé should be single-spaced with an extra line between blocks of information.

Begin a resumé with your name, address, and contact information (eg. telephone or fax numbers, email address). Do not include age, marital status, or other personal facts. Next, many resumé state the position sought or career goal. Then comes perhaps the most important part: a chronological outline of work experience-starting with the most recent job and working backwards- including for each position a brief description of relevant duties and skills used or acquired. Finally, include an outline of your educational background from the most recent backwards. Make sure to list dates of completion, full name and locations (if not common knowledge) of schools, and diplomas or certificates awarded.

1. Which of the following should NOT be on your resumé? a. Your name, telephone and fax numbers.b. The year you received your bachelor’s degree.c. Your nationality and the fact that you are single.d. A description of tasks performed in your last job.

2. What is true about a resumé? a. Resumé should be brief but very informative.b. A resumé should have three-quarter inch margins on both sides.c. Important information should be italicizedd. An outline of educational background should end with the most recent information.

3. Which of the following is NOT included as part of the resumé? a. Some personal information b. Work experience in the order of time.c. Educational background in the order of time. d. A list of dates of completion.

4. Which of the following should be included in educational background? a. Your full names b. Your marital status c.

INVESTMENT TIED TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Recently, the local press has often lamented the environmental damage caused by production plants, especially those which discharge untreated wastewater. In particular, the Ba Bo Canal in Binh Chieu Ward, Thu Duc District, HCM City, is severely polluted, and Vedan in Dong Nai City has killed the Thi Vai River.

Various obstacles are hampering Vietnam’s efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable economic development. For one, protecting the environment remains easier said than done as the authorities have not closely monitored the impacts of business activities on the ecosystem. The sanctions imposed remain too lenient to deter possible offenders and raise public awareness.

With regard to business ethics, the above cases arise because these investment activities are not closely tied to corporate social responsibilities, including environmental protection.

Thanks to its economic achievements in recent years, Vietnam is considered a phenomenon among emerging economics and, as a result, has attracted a large number of equity funds. These equity funds never invest in enterprises whose operations pollute and damage the environment. While all investors are profit-oriented, enhanced public awareness and changing purchasing patterns, which arise from greater social development, mean that sooner or later consumers will wonder whether they should purchase or use products and services offered by enterprises whose operations destroy and pollute the environment.

BIG AGRICULTURAL PROJECTS NEEDED.

In my opinion, to maintain the agricultural land and to get high results in cultivation toward modernization, the Government needs to release policies to promote enterprises investing in agricultural projects. They can lease land from farmers and employ farmers or cooperate with farmers. These investors are good at capital, manufacturing and management, agro-product trading and domestic and foreign markets. They will decide what kind of plants for the land based on research and markets. If this comes true, it will bring good things for Vietnam’s agriculture such as canceling small agricultural businesses and unstable cultivation, creating jobs for farmers and developing agriculture toward big-scale farming, mechanization and modernization.

SPACE ARC.

British teenagers are amongst thousands of young people who have responded to an unusual request from scientists. They were asked to “send a message to the future”. The messages, which will include letters, pictures and music, will be placed in a time capsule called Space Arc. The four kilogram capsule will be on a satellite which is being launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The response to the scientists request has been incredible. “We've had thousands of letters from all over the world,” said one of the organizers. “We've selected some of the messages already and we're going to choose the rest next month.” Space Arc will contain all sorts of information about life on earth today. Messages are going to include information about school, family life and religion as well as drugs and crime. Peter Fox, one of the organizers, said “It is important that the messages reflect the twentieth century accurately. We don't want people of the future to misunderstand what life was like this century”.

The satellite will circle the earth for twelve years. After that time, Space Arc, which was paid for by an American museum, will separate from the main satellite and be sent into orbit a few hundred miles above the earth. It will remain in orbit for millions of years.

One of the organizers explained more about the project. “We created Space Arc in order to communicate with the people of the future. It is impossible to predict exactly what will happen to it. The human race may have disappeared by the time Space Arc is opened again.”

One of the messages is from an 11-year-old schoolboy. Joseph Williamson, who is very worried about the environment, wants to ask this question: “In the 1990s we are trying to clean the earth. Did we succeed ?”

so that its services are, in effect, entirely complementary to the efforts being made by agencies like Oxfam, Christian Aid and Save the Children Fund with whom it often works directly.

VSO tries to respond to requests from overseas which ask for volunteers. Its bias is firmly towards the poorest members of the community and it takes great care to avoid undermining job opportunities for local people.

Both staff and volunteers also pay special attention to women's roles in development projects. This is because women's roles in child-rearing, in education and community cohesion are essential in any healthy process of change.

Over the past 38 years, more than 21,000 volunteers have worked abroad with VSO. There are now over 1,900 volunteers working in 59 of the less developed countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean.

The application of each volunteer is carefully considered in order to select and interview candidates against each job request from the field, to seek the person with the right blend of skills and personality.

VSO, the workVSO volunteers do not go to developing countries as visiting experts with all the answers. It is always a

process of sharing and learning. The aim is that when the volunteer returns home, there exists a community with a stronger sense of independence and self-reliance and a volunteer with a new understanding and appreciation of life and people everywhere. The range of jobs required of VSO is wide-reflecting the needs of any society in the modern world.
