A message from our Chief Execuve
In 2010, CSR-in-Action was birthed with
consciousness of the need for sustainable
development, responsible behaviour and good
governance, backed up by a bold spirit and
determination. Today, we have evolved into a
conglomerate of 3 sustainability focused
businesses: CSR-in-Action Consulting, the College
of Sustainable Citizenship and CSR-in-Action
Advocacy, promoting an inclusive approach to
achieving the Nigeria of our dreams.
Inspired by ever evolving demands, we constantly
create solutions that marry the experiences in our
local terrain with international best practices.
This has allowed us to develop increasingly
innovative and sustainable strategies which
engender support from our valued stakeholders
in the public and private sector including,
Accenture, Ernst & Young, PwC, Nigerian
Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative
(NEITI), Ford Foundation, Ministry of Mines and
“At CSR-in-Acon, our core focus is sustainable development, across all sectors.”
Steel Development (MMSD), Nigerian National
Petroleum Commission (NNPC), the Canadian
High Commission, Department of Petroleum
Resources, Securities and Exchange Commission,
and a host of others.
In taking cognisance of the growing acceptance of
sustainability in Africa, we remain committed to
building our capacity to raise the standard of
excellence, surpass stakeholder's expectations
and ensure that the tenets of sustainability are
well-defined and engrained into the DNA of
society, leading to unprecedented economic,
social and environmental benefits in the years to
come.
We ask that you stand with us as we journey to a
future that generations unborn will thank us for.
Sustainably yours,

Case Study: Developing & Implemenng a Winning Sustainability Strategy
The client - aer a successful global merger - idenfied the need to adopt a more sustainable approach to business, and it looked to CSR-in-Acon Consulng as its trusted partner.
What we did
We conducted an inial benchmark exercise to
determine its posion both within its industry, and in
the Nigerian economic landscape. Building on the
foundaon of our findings, we were able to:
· design a sustainability manual with relevant
iniaves in line with its global sustainability plan
and the Nigerian outlook for the future
· script its first sustainability report, ensuring that it
was compliant to the GRI G4 Core framework,
complete with AA1000 Assurance
· design monitoring & evaluaon, as well as impact
assessment frameworks to idenfy needs and

· build capacity within the organisaon for both
stakeholder engagement and sustainability
reporng.
Outcome
The client is now the first in its industry to prepare a
Nigeria-focussed sustainability report in line with the
GRI G4 standard. Furthermore, it now enjoys
increased support from the leadership team on
sustainability as an invaluable strategy for business

Sustainability incubaon hub
...the collective action network 12
CSR-in-Action incubated the idea to create a network of CEOs focused on supporting efforts to achieve sustainable development in Nigeria.
Proposed by an oil & gas industry veteran, this local network of an internaonal NGO is a CEO-led organisaon of forward-thinking companies that galvanises the global business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment.
What we did
CSR-in-Action incubated the organisaon from its concepon to realisaon as a standalone Secretariat. Our support started when we invited a total of 30 CEOs from the most crical sectors of the Nigerian economy to a CEO Business Roundtable on Sustainable Development to garner support for the establishment of the network.
After securing overwhelming support from the business leaders, we helped set up a tightly knit group of Subject Matter Experts (SME) comprised of passionate people from strategically chosen organisations within our network. The SME group was instrumental to providing strategic direction and creating implementation framework which was adopted by a Board of business leaders committed to driving the organisation's mandate.
Outcome
We serve as the Secretariat of the organisation, sett ing the groundwork for pr ivate sector participation in sustainable development in Nigeria. We helped secure the first members, employees, and partners, secured funding, completed its registration as a legal entity, and solidified the partnership with its international counterpart.

In 2016, CSR-in-Acon supported the launch of a new iniave focused on dr iv ing publ ic sector development in Nigeria. A pioneering iniave in Nigeria, the iniave is poised to partner with governments and academic instuons to improve governance and transform public sector performance by providing learning and mentorship opportunies to qualified professionals with a passion for governance in West Africa. What we did
CSR-in-Acon Consulng was brought on to manage stakeholder communicaons for the project, which involved idenfying the most appropr iate communicaon channel for each stakeholder group, and draing key messaging in line with their
expectaons. In addion, because we are the one-stop partner for efficient and viable business soluons, we were further engaged to support with the launch of the iniave with prominent stakeholders in the public and private sectors, as well as academia present. Since then, we have managed the iniave's communicaons using new media tools, as well as offered advisory support to the iniave to help achieve its mandate.
Outcome
The iniave has completed its first round of applicaons for the scholarship in Public Sector Governance at a top-ranking university in the United Kingdom. We have also announced the selecon of the iniave first fellow, who will also serve his tenure at the same university.

Sustainability reporng
Sustainability reports have increasingly become the platform through which companies communicate their performance on social inclusion and environmental issues. The non-financial reporting space is at its infancy in Nigeria and CSR-in-Action has been the fulcrum for the growth and adoption of non-financial reporting practices in Nigeria since we commenced training on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability reporting framework in 2009.
We support companies in writing GRI certified sustainability reports on company performance. Our reporting approach is developed to build our client's capacity to write their own GRI certified reports with time.
As an industry first, we have a dedicated team of trained professionals who have garnered expertise and experience in consulting, drafting and developing report content for a sustainability reports using the GRI G4 framework and have now transited to the GRI standards and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board. Our reporting approach using GRI framework also ensures flexibility for other sustainability frameworks such as ISO standards and the UNGC COP report. CSR-in-Action has written GRI reports for The Nigerian Stock Exchange, Etisalat, Lafarge; and GRI referenced reports for Total and Seven Energy.
Other reports include the premier UNGC Local Network’s report on Anti-Corruption with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), and British America Tobacco Nigeria’s report on poverty alleviation; all obtainable on our web portal.
Since the launch of GRI's fourth generaon reporng framework, G4, Nigerian companies appeared tardy in making the transion from G3.1. A mulnaonal in the telecommunicaons industry, with support from CSR-in-Acon, took on the challenge to put Nigeria on the upgraded sustainability reporng map by adopng the framework in its 2014 sustainability report.
What we did
CSR-in-Acon was at the core of the report
development. Adopng a new reporng framework
required a collaborave approach from both
organisaons. Prior to the report, the organisaon
had reported using some GRI indicators. However,
achieving a standardised report proved to be a more
challenging endeavour. The increased level of
disclosures implied that support from all pares and
key stakeholders within the organisaon was crical.
We engaged all stakeholders, collated feedback, mapped materiality, and ensured adherence to GRI’s core priorisaon.
Outcome
The organisaon has connued its engagement with
us for 2 years running since then. We are pleased to
connue to be a part of the growth of sustainability
reporng in Nigeria.

The benefits of having a local assurance provider has brought about unprecedented benefits to indigenous organisaons. As a progressive financial instuon, the client has over the years posioned itself as a leader in the pracce of the sustainable banking principles. In addion, the organisaon has consistently developed innovave products and services in its quest to achieving sustainability, and has produced GRI sustainability reports since 2009.
What we did
For our client, reporng on a wide number of sustainability iniaves has long resulted in bulky reports. The 2014 sustainability report, using the GRI G4 framework, aempted to solve this challenge by reporng only on what maered most to the bank, thereby significantly reducing report content.
In a bid to retain the integrity of disclosures made in the report, CSR-in-Acon adopted a unique approach to providing assurance by observing key events throughout the course of the reporng year. This was only possible through mutual partnership and availability of local assurance partner.
We also assured stakeholder dialogue sessions that have produced high-level reports on naonal policies affecng the agricultural industry.
Outcome
We have recorded 100% client sasfacon, and connued the engagement with clients in following years.

CSR-in-Action was the first AA1000 certified partner in the West African sub-region of the international organisation, AccountAbility. The AA1000 Assurance Standard was developed and first published in 2003 to assure the credibility and quality of sustainability performance and reporting.
We employ our competence and advancement in the field of sustainability to evaluate the extent of adherence of our client's stakeholder engagements and sustainability reports to the AA1000 Accountability Principles. Our assurance engagements with companies are backed up with advisory services aimed at improving our client's sustainability approach and reporng processes.
Needs and impact assessment
In ensuring a precautionary approach to social and environmental impact of business operations, good companies frequently conduct impact assessments to identify the future consequences of a current or proposed action. Companies also frequently conduct needs analysis to ascertain the basis for social investment projects. At CSR-in-Action, our expertise covers needs and impact assessments - environmental, social and economic impacts baseline studies, and tracer studies.
Child labour remains a crical factor for consideraon under human rights for players in the agricultural industry. Aer embarking on a sensisaon project in its host communies to elucidate the need to eradicate child labour, the client wished to record the impact of this outreach one year aer.
What we did
CSR-in-Acon was engaged to visit 200 farms – spanning 10 locaons in its area of operaon (Oyo North LGA) – to ascertain farmers' compliance with Child Labour regulaons following the inial awareness exercise.
During the exercise, 187 farmers were assessed and 15 locaons covered including: Igboho, Ogboro, Saki, Idiku-Ago, Ilero, Ago-are, Owo, Otuu, Irawo, Baba-Ode, Ilaje, Ofiki, Komu, Igbojaiye, Itasa. In addion to the spot check, one-on-one and group sensisaon was conducted for the farmers. To further reinforce behavioural change, the client and CiA branded Informaon, Educaon and Communicaon (IEC) materials which were hung on key holders and distributed to farmers and their workers.
Outcome
The child labour monitoring approach embarked on
by the organisaon has been largely successful as
there was 98% compliance. However, we idenfied
that non-compliance was largely due to poverty,
borne out of migrant children who were forced to do
the jobs to support themselves and their families.
Furthermore, some of the farmers could not afford
external labour and, therefore, believed they were
le with no choice than to engage their children.

Research & business intelligence
Information is critical for accelerating and improving decision-making; optimising internal business processes; increasing operational efficiency; driving new revenues; and gaining competitive advantage. At CSR-in-Action Consulting, our team of experts engage in in-depth data gathering, analysis and review to equip businesses and their stakeholders with a broad overview of critical business elements and their attendant impacts.
In addition to our sustainability insights which feature benchmark reports, investor reports, and thought leadership articles, we offer bespoke research services covering a wide range of sustainability issues in diverse industries.
The CSIR is the first ever applied research and compilation on the sustainability practices of businesses in Nigeria. With the mandate of the CSIR to foster the adoption of best practices by providing cogent comparative reports on the sustainability approach of organisations in Nigeria (and West Africa), the CSIR is a one-stop shop for summarised information on companies' practices along people, planet and profit lines, and is a tangible resource for quick information and split decisions on companies' investment focus, workplace strategy and attitude to environmental matters.
What we did
In 2012, CSR-in-Action released the country's first collective social investment report an assessment of companies' sustainability performance. The report was launched during the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit on 10-12 November, 2012, and is endorsed by United Nations (UN) entities, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Case Study: The Corporate Sustainability Investor Report (CSIR)
In 2014, CSR-in-Action entered a partnership with Accenture Nigeria and Ernst & Young to review the framework and assure the report respectively, to remain consistent with world class standards.
Outcome
Sponsors, including NBC, Flourmills, PanOcean, GTB, UBA, Forte Oil, and Airline Services and Logistics Limited, have been recipients of even more recognition as a direct result of partnering our report. This is in part possible because of our wide dissemination to a diversity of stakeholders across sectors both locally and internationally, including United Nat ions ent i t ies , embass ies , state governments, other private sector practitioners and lots more. We have had endorsements from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).

Community engagement is the way that firms interact and build bonds with the people within the environment which it operates in and draws resources from, to foster mutual understanding, trust, and support. Communities are systems composed of individual members and sectors that have a variety of distinct characteristics, interests and relationships, and this is a concept that we fully grasp at CSR-in-Action.
Hand in hand with our advocacy arm and our knowledge partners within communities across the region, we gather, dissect, and analyse data, which help us to determine and deploy strategies that work for each sub-group within communities. Our team is diverse with keen interest in the progress of the grassroots and have established key interdependencies that ensure that our interventions yield positive outcomes.

Sustainability in the Extractive Industries (SITEI) Conference
SITEI was launched in 2012 with the Deputy High Commission of Canada, to facilitate the much-needed transparency and accountability within the tradionally opaque extracve sector. In keeping with its mandate, the conference moved from Lagos to Abuja in 2015, to tap into growing government interest in the diversificaon of the economy through the sector.
SITEI 2016 further built on this plaorm backed, by our partnership with Nigerian Extracve Industries Transparency Iniave (NEITI), and the endorsement of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD), and the Nigerian Naonal Petroleum Corporaon (NNPC). The theme for the year focussed on Revitalising the Nigerian Economy Beyond Oil: Prospects for a Thriving Export-Driven Extracve
Sector, and witnessed increased parcipaon from the internaonal community – US Consulate, Heinrich Boell Foundaon, Ford Foundaon – academia, players in the mining sector, and Civil Society Organisaons in addion to the private and public sectors.
A notable highlight of SITEI 2016 was the launch of the Sustainable Extracve and Energy Principles (SEEP): a set of principles designed to guide industry players to priorise inclusivity, earth, economy and reporng, as they conduct their business transparently and responsibly. SEEP, which was designed by the 2015 post-SITEI working group, is open to all organisaons to sign up on our website www.csr-in-acon. org, or by sending an email to SEEP@csr-in-acon .org.

The organisation - through its foundation - had adopted schools in 18 different states in the North, South-South, South-West Nigeria. To further structure their interventions in education, they needed NGOs with expertise in Teacher Training Management, Scholarship Management, Community Engagement and Rehabilitation of school structures.
The foundation had less than 2 weeks to reach out to and engage the selected NGOs. They started off with 2 adverts in the dailies on a Monday, and when by Wednesday, the response was not as expected, CiA was called in.
What we did
We quickly put together an RFP and sent an email blast to our database comprising thousands of NGOs. We sorted through and shortlisted entries based on cr iter ia, intuit ive knowledge and proof of professionalism. After which we sent out to the organisations to send more information which we subjected to pre-determined quantitative metrics. We then co-interviewed (in partnership with the foundation) selected organisations face-to-face and via telephone.
The outcome
CiA surpassed expectation by 400%, garnering over 50 complete applications within 4 days and within agreed timelines. Through proactive pursuit of applicants, we ensured that a good number of applicants provided at least 60% of requirements. Our exercise increased awareness for the foundation, as well as enhanced its brand collateral. The foundation also enjoyed increased trust within recipient circles, as many applicants were convinced about the integrity of the call based on its handling by a trusted partner.

Candidate, Cranfield School of Management, UK
