Curly Teddy Bear Design by Colleen Sullivan DIRECTIONS Beginner SIZE 12 inches sitting MATERIALS • Worsted weight yarn: 10 1 2 oz white, scrap of black • Size G/6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge • 3 black 5 8-inch shank buttons • 1yd1 1 4-inch-wide red plaid ribbon • Fiberfill • Yarn needle GAUGE 4 sc = 1 inch Check gauge to save time. PATTERN NOTES Weave in loose ends as work pro- gresses. Join rnds with a sl st unless other- wise stated. To prevent choking hazards in small children, embroider the facial features instead of using buttons. HEAD Rnd 1: With white, ch 3, 9 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of beg ch-3. (10 hdc) Note: Rnds 2–10, work in back lps only. Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc throughout), hdc in same st as beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each st around, join. (20 hdc) Rnds 3 & 4: Ch 2, hdc around, inc 10 hdc evenly sp around, join. (40 hdc) Rnds 5–7: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join. Rnds 8 & 9: Ch 2, hdc around, dec 10 hdc evenly sp around, join. (20 hdc) Rnd 10: Ch 2, sk next hdc, [dec 1 hdc over next 2 sts] rep around, join, fasten off. DOUBLE-LOOP STITCH Starting in any rem free lp at center of head, attach white with a sl st, ch 1, sc in same st, *[draw up a 3 4–1-inch lp, yo, draw through lp, insert hook under the top 2 strands of yarn (the long lp and the yarn that was drawn through), and complete a sc] twice, sc in next rem free lp, rep from * in each rem free lp of rnd, after all rem free lps of this rnd are completed, ch 1, sc in next rem free lp of next rnd, rep from *, continue to rep in each rem free lp of each rnd until all rnds are completed, fasten off. SNOUT Note: Do not join rnds, use a scrap of CC yarn to mark rnds. Rnd 1: With white, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc) Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc) Rnd 3: Sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in each of next 6 sc. (18 sc) Rnd 4: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times, [hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next sc] 6 times. (27 sts) Rnd 5: Sc in each of next 9 sc, hdc in each of next 18 hdc. Rnd 6: Sc in each st around, sl st in next st, fasten off. Note: Hdc sts are the bottom of snout, sc sts are the top. For nose, sew a button to Rnd 2 at top of snout. With yarn needle and length of black yarn, embroider mouth below nose. Stuff snout with fiberfill and sew to head. Sew button eyes above snout. Stuff head with fiberfill and sew opening closed. EAR Make 2 Row 1: Working with 2 strands of white, ch 3, 5 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, turn. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st as beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each rem hdc across, turn. Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, fasten off. Sew ears to top of head. BODY Rnd 1: With white, ch 3, 9 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, join. (10 hdc) Note: Rnds 2–12, work in back lps only. Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st as beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, join.
