They bring together experts from diverse fields including building and infrastructure, engineering and design, transport, energy, water and waste management, social science and urban governance, urban ecology and environment, digital technologies and human health. The purpose is to test and evaluate urban innovations in ‘real world’ contexts, study how they interact with people and other parts of the urban system, and showcase and implement the learnings at both a national and global scale. CREATING SMART CITIES OF THE FUTURE

FUTURE CITIES. SMART CITIES. A GLOBAL CHALLENGE Cities and their inhabitants generate a significant proportion of the world’s economic activity, providing employment, housing, social and lifestyle opportunities. They also account for most of the global drain on natural resources, energy and materials, and generate a majority of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Rethinking and creating cities of the future that are smart and sustainable is imperative for solving the pressing global challenges that are now facing humanity.

CSIRO URBAN LIVING LABS – MANY LOCATIONS, ONE BIG IDEACSIRO’s Urban Living Labs are real urban developments that draw on collaborations of researchers, industry, community and governments to innovate, develop and road-test the cities of the future.

CSIRO is working with international partners to extend and apply the learnings from Urban Living Labs to drive the smart and sustainable cities of the future.

CSIRO URBAN LIVING LABS AND COLLABORATORS

Smart cities of the future are being innovated, designed and built from the ground up through the new Urban Living Lab ventures led by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and industry collaborators.

Ginninderra, Canberra, ACT is a 701-hectare greenfield site on the northern fringe of Australia’s capital, Canberra. Through a joint venture partnership and collaborations with industry, government and the community, CSIRO is preparing to transform its farming research field station into a unique urban development that sets an international benchmark for smart and sustainable cities of the future. The aim is to use the latest scientific thinking and expertise to showcase urban innovations and technological solutions for the cities of the future. The Ginninderra venture will target new jobs, industry, and social and environmental benefits for Australia, and is set to become a game-changing initiative for delivering world’s best practice.

Sydney Science Park is a 280-hectare mixed-use greenfield development in Western Sydney that is set to become one of the largest centres of research and development in the country. Working in partnership with Celestino, the Sydney Science Park is the venue for the first CSIRO Urban Living Lab. It will host Australian and international innovators as they create ideas and inventions and test them in Sydney Science Park’s unique urban development. Some of the ideas being explored include the development and application of different types of smart energy and water systems that can respond to climate and population changes.

“Canberra is a place for urban prototyping…what we are doing here to respond to and shape economic, demographic and environmental forces that are confronting all cities – in Australia and globally – is of international interest and significance.”ACT Government Statement of Ambition

“We could see people creating new ways to harness solar energy in the workplace and developing novel ideas to store heat and keep homes cool. New sustainable transport solutions will also be encouraged as well as inventions that conserve water and energy and drive down utility bills. The possibilities are endless.” John Vassallo, CEO Celestino

WHY CSIRO?CSIRO is a world leader in integrated sustainable cities research. We maintain testing facilities to support industry and government with building product conformity and certification and have developed the Australian benchmark in building energy rating software. Our capability in materials sciences provides input into new building products, and we continue to deliver research across multiple sectors and domains relevant to urban development including land, water, atmosphere, climate, energy, liveability, digital innovation, and food, health and biosecurity. We use ‘futures thinking’ and system-based approaches to overcome blind-spots and help make the case for change.
