HCUC - A MERGER BETWEEN UXBRIDGE COLLEGE AND HARROW COLLEGE On 1 August 2017 Uxbridge College and Harrow College merged to become HCUC.The colleges are part of the same organisation and work together to provide the bestopportunities for our students. Although we are part of the same organisation, the colleges keep their individual names. We are still known as Uxbridge College and our students will study on one of our two campuses in Uxbridge and Hayes.

From the first day I arrived at Uxbridge College, I knew I wanted to become more involved. From volunteering for open evenings to helping organise charity events, I spend my time to help make the College an even better place than it is already. I aim to lead the Student Union to become brighter in the future, focusing on being the bridge between the College and my fellow students and stand up for the student voice.

As Student President my aim for this year is to ensure that the College will continue to develop and every student is pleased with their education. Working together with the Student Council and Student Support we will organise more events and activities to allow students to have fun while studying and reach their full potential.

Being given the honourable position of Student President I hope that I can give every student a voice. I am truly proud to be part of such a well-respected college and I will promote a positive and welcoming learning environment for all. I will spread positivity and friendliness across the College and ensure students are aware of the support available at the College.

Uxbridge College represents so much more than a place of education. It allows students to be the best version of themselves by providing challenging teaching techniques for their future. Working alongside the Student Council it will be my aim to enable every student to express their suggestions to make a progressive change for the College. As Student President, I will be spreading a message of unity amongst the students to create a brighter future for us all.

Some entry requirements may differ from those indicated below. These will be specified in the entry requirements section of each course.

A GUIDE TO ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Uxbridge College accepts and welcomes qualifications from overseas. We use UK NARIC to assess the equivalency of overseas qualifications and to assess whether the qualification is accredited in the country from which you obtained it. We require overseas qualifications to be submitted in their original form. Where a translation of an overseas qualification or award certificate is submitted, we will not take it as a direct translation of the academic level of that award. Applicants may need to sit an entry test for the purposes of academic assessment. Please note that English Language qualifications from overseas may be taught as a second or foreign language. We will always use UK NARIC or, where appropriate, CEFR benchmarks to assess the equivalency of overseas English Language qualifications. For students who are applying via the Tier 4 visa route we will require them to sit UKVI approved SELT, e.g. IELTS (Academic).

STUDENTS WITH MORE COMPLEX SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SKILLS FOR INDEPENDENCE & SUPPORTED LEARNING)

At Uxbridge College we aim to give all our students a great start for their future. We want our students to achieve their full potential and provide opportunities for them to succeed.

We offer specialist courses for students who have more complex special educational needs and provide a welcoming and safe environment for learning. These students will be on a study programme that suits their personal requirements and prepares them for adult life with topics including jobs, health, independent living and accessing the community. This study programme can help lead to other courses within the College or into employment or further training.

We support our students to achieve the best possible educational and other outcomes, raise their aspirations and help them to focus on employability, positive wellbeing, family and friends.

For more information about our provision for students with more complex special educational needs, please see page 126 or call 01895 853422.

My role involves working in the classroom, together with the tutors, to help support students who have additional needs, to ensure they achieve their full potential. This could be helping students with their understanding of set tasks, providing guidance to help students plan and carry out their studies or enabling them to use effective researching techniques. Where required, I also support students with their literacy and numeracy skills to give them the confidence to produce work at a level that is expected for their chosen course.

Achieved grade 3 or grade D at GCSE? You will be enrolled onto a GCSE course and work towards gaining a grade 4 or above.

Achieved grade 3 or grade D, or below? You will be enrolled to study either Functional Skills or GCSEs in English and maths at an appropriate level. shanon I came to Uxbridge College to look for an apprenticeship and successfully completed a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship. The lecturers were informative; our class was only a small group, which meant that the lecturer was able to give us all individual attention and feedback. The facilities are great, the canteen is definitely better than other colleges I have visited.

The company that I completed my apprenticeship with offered me a permanent position once I completed my apprenticeship. I would definitely recommend Uxbridge College - they have helped me progress my education and matched me with a company that suits my personality and skill set.

APPRENTICESHIP LEVELS 2-5

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - COURSE DETAILS -

• 16 years or over

• Entry requirements are decided by employers or

sector bodies, but usually five GCSEs are required

• Initial assessments in literacy and numeracy and

interviews at college and with the employer or

you will be required to achieve Level 2 English

and maths (Functional Skills).

We offer ‘Apprenticeship Frameworks’ and ‘Apprenticeship Standards’ depending on the subject.

Apprenticeship Frameworks, developed by sector bodies, are used to assess apprenticeships. Each framework contains pathways, which set out different roles. Frameworks are primarily qualification-focused. The main aim at the end of a framework is to have achieved a competency based qualification, such as an NVQ, and a technical qualification, such as a BTEC.

Apprenticeship Standards are designed by industry expert employers to develop the practical skills and behaviours specific to job roles and provide a pathway to a career within the sector. The standards focus on the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of the apprentice to ensure they:

• meet professional registration requirements in sectors where this exists (such as, engineering, dental nursing and accountancy) and

• demonstrate mastery of an occupation to operate confidently within a sector by the time they have completed their apprenticeship.

Assessment:You will be continually assessed in knowledge, skills and behaviour areas at work plus you will attend college (usually once a week) to learn theory and underpinning knowledge. Towards the end of the apprenticeship, employers and providers will ‘sign-off’ the apprentice called the ‘gateway’ - indicating the employer and providers believe the student is ready for end-point assessment (EPA). An EPA is a collection of assessments that offers confirmation of knowledge, skills and behaviours for a particular role. The EPA must be achieved before your apprenticeship is awarded and a certificate can be issued.

Subjects Available:Accounting, Beauty Therapy, Building / Property Maintenance, Building Services, Business Administration, Childcare, Creative Media, Customer Service, Dental Nursing, Electrical Installation, Engineering, Gas & Heating, Hairdressing, Health & Social Care, Hospitality, Human Resources, Information Technology, Lab Technician, Management, Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, Professional Cookery, Teaching Assistant and Team Leading.

PROGRESSION -

Further Study: On successful completion of an apprenticeship, you may progress to a higher level of apprenticeship, a university level course or a similar framework or standard. Some employers might even sponsor you to study at university.

Career Opportunities: Many apprentices are taken on full-time at their workplace. Some may also receive recognition from professional bodies. Others have boosted their CVs with job specific experience to fast-track their career in various companies.

Duration:12-48 months (depending on the subject).
