Adam Rossington – who played his club cricket for Eastcote last year – his first in the Middlesex Academy – has been juggling pre- season training with final prepara- tions to sit his A-levels in business studies and IT in June. And this after he spent the winter starring for the England U19s on their tour of Sri Lanka. Yet it seems the 17-year-old wicketkeeper batsman is more than happy to rotate swotting boundaries and books for as long as it takes. He said: “I’ve got quite a bit on my plate at the minute but it is not too bad. School is quite good at allowing me to come and play cricket and giving me time to train. “The main thing is to get the exams out of the way and then pick it up from there. Obviously I still want to play cricket while the exams are going on, but really push on once they have all finished.” Rossington, who made his debut for Middlesex under nines aged just six, has shown more than once his ability to thrive under pressure. He made 161 on his debut for Middlesex seconds last season and made 113 against Sri Lanka’s best young spinners in the first Test match in Galle this winter. He admits the latter was an innings which gave him a massive shot of confidence. He said: “It was a great feeling to score 100 in the sub-continent on a turning pitch. I had done a lot of work before I went away against the turning ball, so it was nice to get in the runs early. “It was a good batting pitch, quite slow, but offered quite a bit for the spinners. As it dried out it did seem to turn a lot more.” There is no doubting the young- ster’s ambition as he stated last year he wanted to be in the Middlesex first team by the end of the 2011 season. And he knows with John Simpson and Ben Scott ahead of him in the wicketkeeper stakes, it is runs like those in Galle which may earn him a call up. He added: “Obviously I would like to challenge the wicket- keeping boys, but Simmo and Scotty are two very good players. “If I can’t get in as a keeper, I’ve got to score enough runs to warrant a place as a batsman.” Rossington made the perfect start to that quest with 111 in the seconds’ one-day win over Hertfordshire on Sunday. Harefield aiming to be the best in Europe HAREFIELD Academy’s basketball team are aiming to make giant strides in the coming years after a promising debut season at national level, writes Will Dubey. The head coach at Harefield, Jack Majewski, has visions of establishing the institute as one of the best basketball academies in Europe after a creditable first campaign. The newly formed London United claimed notable scalps on the way to a fifth-placed finish in the league, beating national champions Westminster Warriors and runners-up Reading Rockets. Perhaps an even better achievement came at senior level, with youngsters from The Harefield Academy helping the senior team finish sixth in men’s division two. However, the real heroics from Harefield were saved for the cup competitions. In the National Cup they beat a number of division one teams on the way to a narrow semi-final defeat to eventual winners Brixton Topcats, while Harefield’s showing in the Patrons’ Cup was perhaps their most inspiring as they lost in nail-biting fashion to Hemel Storm 75-72 in the final. Harefield’s exploits have led to coach Majewski targeting further success. “Our target is to become one of the best basketball academies in Europe, that is why we are extensively recruiting new players from the UK and abroad,” he said. Harefield’s desire to emulate top academies in Europe was evident when they invited a Russian academy team to play a friendly match as part of their European tour. Hawkins not interestedin full-time managementTemporary boss is happy to see out rest of the season

STEVE Hawkins will stay on asHillingdon Borough manageruntil the end of the season, butinsists he is not interested in afull-time job.

Hawkins stepped into the breachwhen Boro were left in the lurch byGary Meakin’s defection to neigh-bours Northwood three weeks ago.

However, although his stay willonly be a temporary one, it will giveBoro some breathing space in whichto find a permanent replacement forMeakin.

Hawkins said: “I can 100 per centdefinitely say I am not interested inthe job full-time.

“I have already been managerhere once, between 2000 and 2002,before moving to North GreenfordUnited, and I don’t want to go back.

“It’s not that I think I’m betterthan the club or think I should bemanaging at a higher level, it’s justthat I’ve been there and done italready.

“I’ve kept in touch with the clubsince I left and come down togames, especially when my son wasplaying and they asked me to helpout, but that was it.”

Hawkins was certainly left with amammoth rebuilding task afterMeakin left, taking his backroom

staff with him, along with sixHillingdon players.

Hawkins said: “It’s certainly beena busy few weeks. Nine players intotal left when Gary did, leaving mewith only seven, and that was fourdays before the transfer deadline!

“In my first four games we hadpretty much four completely differ-ent sides out. We have been calling

in favours from other clubs, whohave helped us out.”

Ironically, two players whoplayed with Meakin at the nowdefunct Bedfont FC last season havebeen brought in on dual registration,Hendon winger Aaron Morgan andWalton Casuals defender LiamHind.

However, not even Hawkins’

reinforcements could prevent Borocrashing out of the MiddlesexSenior Charity Cup in last Tuesday’s3-0 home semi-final with HanworthVilla, who won it thanks to a LeviKing hat-trick.

Impressive Hayes win keeps Haylock happy

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISIONHendon 0Wealdstone 1WES Parker’s second-half goal ended a run ofthree successive defeats for Wealdstone atHendon on Saturday.

The defender struck with a header to settle agame with a distinctly end of season feel to it,lacking the intensity normally associated withskirmishes between neighbours.

Stones began brightly enough with a shot from

Callum Martin stinging the palms of Greens’keeper James Reading after 10 minutes, while 60 seconds later Peter Dean’s effort hit the sidenetting.

Much of the rest of the half was a tale of mishitor misdirected passes by both sides, but visitingkeeper Jonathan North was finally employed on38 minutes when he tipped over a fiercely struckfree kick from Hendon’s top scorer Belal Aite-

Ouakrim. Dean went close on two occasions ashalf-time approached, but it remained goalless atthe break.

On a day of little creativity the deadlock wasbroken on 50 minutes from a set piece.

Dean lifted a corner into the 18-yard box, where Parker rose highest to loop his headerbeyond Reading.

Stones had chances to kill the game off Dean seeing a shot blocked after he wasunselfishly set up by Gavin Massey, while Martin

saw his shot from the edge well saved byReading.

And as Hendon left gaps in search of a leveller,Massey again got the back line to tee up LeeChappell, but the Stones’ skipper fired widewith the goal gaping.

Gordon Bartlett’s men might have paid forthose misses late on when Aite-Ouakrim tookaim from the edge of the area, but North was onhand to palm the shot away and seal a morale-boosting win.

BLUE SQUARE PREMIERHayes and Yeading 4Mansfield Town 0GARRY Haylock was delighted tosee his side put four past Mansfieldwithout reply after fearing a repeatof January’s capitulation againstRushden and Diamonds.

The Hayes and Yeading boss waspleased his men came into thedressing room three goals to thegood at half-time but was mindfulof throwing away the points in asimilar fashion to United’s 3-3 drawwith the Diamonds earlier in theseason.

He said: “We played Rushden and

Diamonds here this season at 3-0 upwith 20 minutes to go and drewthree each – two points lost. What Isaid at half-time was we must keepa clean sheet. I don’t care about any-thing else but I want a clean sheet.

“Earlier in the season we playedsome great football but we couldn’tkeep a clean sheet. Last week wedefended really well, this weekwe’ve defended really well. It’s apleasing performance, I’m not sureit’s our best of the season but it’scertainly pleasing.”

Free-scoring midfielder BradleyPritchard gave Hayes the lead afterjust 11 minutes as he guided aheader into the top right hand cornerof David Grof’s net.

Ten minutes later and it was twowith Elliott Buchanan sweepinghome a perfectly weighted crossfrom on-loan Crawley Town fullback Sam Rents.

Buchanan then sent United intodreamland with a venomous volleywhich cannoned in off the post afterPeter Holmes had beaten the offsidetrap.

Mansfield gave themselves aneven bigger mountain to climbbefore the break when Paul Connorwas dismissed for raising an arm.

And despite Haylock’s fears theStags posed no second-half threat, only finding the net with 10 minutesremaining as Tyrone Thompsonbizarrely put past his own keeper.

GARRY Haylock has hailed theemergence of Elliott Buchananas Hayes and Yeading’s unlikelyrelegation saviour after hissuperb debut season atConference level.

The 21-year-old striker endured aslow start to his Hayes and Yeadingcareer after making a giant leapfrom Southern League football withSlough Town, and struck just twogoals before Christmas.

After starting the season in theshadow of then top marksman BenWright, injury and a loss of formsaw Buchanan playing reserve teamfootball.

He also had to cope with thedeath of his father in January.

However, he is now Hayes andYeading’s main man up front, with14 goals in all competitions.

Hayes and Yeading boss Haylocksaid: “We always felt that it wasgoing to be after Christmas that hecame to the fore. He played atSlough Town last year, so he hascome in from three levels below andhe is playing very well.

“It has taken him a while to getinto the pace of the games but whenwe lost Ben, it meant we had tothrow him in, which wasn’t right forhim. Now he is in form we thoughtwe’d get more out of him, and he’son fire at the moment.”

Buchanan, who made only onebrief appearance as substitute in his

first stint at Conference level withStevenage Borough three years ago, says he is thriving on the responsi-bility of keeping Hayes and Yeadingup after his double blast in the 4-0win over Mansfield.

His resurgence has also meant hehas had to rethink his pre-seasontarget of 10 goals.

“To be top goalscorer wouldmean a lot to me. I’ve said 15 is arealistic target before the end of theseason. I set that number a couple of

months ago. I think I am about oneaway from that now so I might pushit up a bit.

“It has definitely helped me sinceI have been starting. I knew thatonce I got a bit of consistency Iwould score goals. So I am justhappy to be starting and scoring.

“I think we should be safe if wecan grind out one more victory. Themomentum would take us and wecould push on. I am leading the lineup top at the moment and if I can

keep this scoring run going thenhopefully it will help us to stay up.”

Meanwhile, Haylock could face agoalkeeping selection dilemma forthe visit of Darlington on Saturday.

Shane McWeeney came in for the Mansfield game in place of LeeHarrison, whose wife had gone intolabour, but the latter will be back in contention for Saturday, as willDelroy Preddie, who has returned tofull training after a hamstringinjury.
