RESIDENCES

There are numerous residences that accommodate students. Most of them are private, and in some cases they belong to an institution. They have private or shared rooms, and they can offer various services such as meals, laundering of clothes, room cleaning , etc.

RENTING OF ROOMS

Many families rent rooms in their homes, some offer the possibility of full-board (meals included). The prices of such rentals can range from 500 to 600 Euros.

The Centre for University Information and Documentation (CIDU), found in every University, has files of information dealing with such services.

SHARING FLATS

On the bulletin boards of the different Schools of the University there are many announcements of people looking for room-mates. This can prove to be an inexpensive and easy way to find accommodation.

The Colegios Mayores are University Centers that, integrated in the University, they provide residence to the students and they promote the cultural and scientific formation of the residents, projecting their activity to the service of the university community “(L.O.U. : Organic Law for Universities)

They are not just halls of residence, but also offer their resident students a comprehensive and extensive range of cultural and leisure activities and in many cases a complementary academic life. Social life is very intense in the Colegios Mayores.



History:History:

The Colegios Mayores are institutions which have a long tradition behind them in Spanish university life. Their origins go back to the thirteenth century (XIII), when it became necessary to find accommodation for those students who, coming from all over the country, came to certain Spanish towns to try to find out what it would be like living together in groups. As time went on, those residences acquired a much greater importance; in some cases, they became the basis of the University. In other cases, they became cultural entities which were more important than the university itself.
