Invitation to Worship: Music Ministry at

Corpus Christi

Perhaps you’ve heard it said that we must invite those at Mass to “full, active and conscious”

participation in the liturgy. And yet, so often, as regular Mass-goers, it can be easy to find ourselves slipping into routine and going through the motions in prayer.

Here at Corpus Christi, our Music Ministry serves to invite people to worship in a way that involves their minds, the bodies and their hearts in song.

“We are not there to perform — we are there to invite the community to sing with us,” says parishioner Linda Hunter, who coordinates the choir at the Corpus Christi site, along with musician Conner Mowery. “Music enhances the liturgy.”

“As a choir, our job is to lead the congregation and inspire them,” Conner says. “It is very rewarding and a great way to serve the Church.”

Judy Martin has been leading the Choir at Corpus Christi-Holy Family site for many decades and enhances the liturgy with diligent planning and harmonious singing; offering hymns of praise and thanksgiving every weekend.

Monica Bentzinger serves as the organist and Music Coordinator at Our Lady of Carter Lake and has been involved in music ministry at the parish for nearly three decades.

“Music is such an important part of the liturgy,” she says. “I truly enjoy it and I love to send my church family out the door singing the Lord’s praises.”

Quizás haya escuchado decir que debemos

Stewardship: Living Life to the

Fullest When we declare Christ as

our King and Savior, we also promise to exist as His earthly body. The universal Church depends upon its individual earthly members for evangelization and support. As stewards, we must respond to this call with living faith and heartfelt stewardship. We must employ our lives in Christ’s service, allowing Him to vocationally use us to our fullest potential. God designed us with specific talents in mind — by closely communicating with Jesus, His Son, we can put our talents to proper use. As stated in John’s Gospel, when we give our lives to Christ, He promises to ignite them accordingly: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10).

When we embark upon a lifelong path of stewardship, giving our time, talent and treasure in the service of God and His Church, we are effectively allowing Jesus to guide us along life’s slippery slopes with the steady hand of a practiced master. Christ explains this concept in the ninth chapter of Luke’s Gospel: “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it” (Lk 9:23-24).

As Catholics, we are urged to promote all stages of life, and to stand up in its defense. Considering the attention death has garnered within our society, an understanding and respect for life must be reinstated into our culture and lives. But we must first harbor a true, personal love for life within our very souls, and live our own lives to the fullest, through Christ, in the service and promotion of His Church. We must become stewards of faith, in order to truly live as Christ planned.

Cuando declaramos a Cristo como nuestro Rey y Salvador, también

prometemos existir como Su cuerpo terrenal. La Iglesia universal depende de sus miembros terrenales individua-les para la evangelización y el apoyo. Como mayordomos, debemos respon-der a este llamado con una fe viva y una corresponsabilidad sincera. Debemos emplear nuestras vidas en el servicio de Cristo, permitiéndole que nos use vocacionalmente a nuestro máximo potencial. Dios nos diseñó con talentos específicos en mente: al comunicarnos estrechamente con Jesús, su Hijo, po-

demos poner nuestros talentos en uso apropiado. Como se afirma en el Evangelio de Juan, cuando en-tregamos nuestras vidas a Cristo, Él promete encen-derlas de acuerdo con esto: “Vine para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia” (Jn 10:10).

Cuando nos embarcamos en un camino de corresponsabilidad de toda la vida, dando nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro al servicio de Dios y su Iglesia, estamos permitiendo que Jesús nos guíe a lo largo de las pendientes resbaladizas de la vida con la mano firme de un maestro practicado. Cristo explica este concepto en el noveno capítulo del Evangelio de Lucas: “Si alguien quiere venir a por mí, debe negarse a sí mismo, tomar su cruz todos los días y seguirme. Porque quien quiera salvar su vida, la perderá, pero quien pierda su vida por mí, la salvará” (Lc 9, 23-24).

Como católicos, se nos insta a promover todas las etapas de la vida y a defendernos en su defensa. Considerando la atención que la muerte ha atraído dentro de nuestra sociedad, el entendimiento y el respeto por la vida deben restablecerse en nuestra cultura y nuestras vidas. Pero primero debemos albergar un verdadero amor personal por la vida dentro de nuestras almas, y vivir nuestras propias vidas al máximo, a través de Cristo, en el servicio y promoción de su Iglesia. Debemos convertirnos en mayordomos de la fe, para vivir verdaderamente como Cristo planeó.

We Are Faithful in the Face of a Crisis

We are now a few weeks into the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I know many

of you are doing your best to practice the faith during these challenging times. You are praying — perhaps more now than you have for years, and that is a blessing. You are finding unique ways to serve others, even if social distancing means you can only serve your immediate family members at this time. That, too, is a blessing. And, many of you are making financial decisions that bless others.

We will celebrate the Holy Mass at the altar daily in private at noon. In addition, 4 p.m. on Saturday (English) followed by Mass in Spanish. Visit our website to live stream daily and weekend Masses — www.corpuschristiparishiowa.org. Also, check out our website for additional spiritual resources.

Over the past week or so, members of our parish community have asked how they can continue to support our parish financially since they are unable to attend Mass and make their gift to the offertory. I am truly grateful that so many of you want to continue to give a portion of your treasure back to God and our parish.

Here are a few options you can utilize while you are away from Mass:

• Electronic Giving: You can simply go to www.corpuschristiparishiowa.org, where you will find easy-to-follow instructions on how to enter your personal and payment information, and make your weekly gift there.

• Mail: Our mailing address is 3304 4th Ave. Council Bluffs, IA 51501. I suggest you place your check in your regular offertory envelope and then enclose it in a regular envelope addressed to our parish. (As a reminder, you should never mail cash.)

I have been overwhelmed by the level of support so many of you have shown me and our parish during these trying times. Together, with God’s mercy, we will see this challenge through. We will come out on the other side of this crisis a much stronger and more faithful community than ever.

Please know that I hold each and every one of you up in prayer. And, I know you will continue to do the same for me and our faith community.

Somos Fieles Ante Una Crisis

Estamos a unas pocas semanas de la crisis de la pandemia de COVID-19, y sé que muchos de ustedes

están haciendo todo lo posible para practicar la fe durante estos tiempos difíciles. Están orando, tal vez más ahora de lo que han oraado durante años, y eso es una bendición. Está encontrando formas únicas de servir a los demás, incluso si el distanciamiento social significa que solo puede servir a los miembros de su familia inmediata en este momento. Eso también es una bendición. Y, muchos de ustedes están tomando decisiones financieras que bendicen a los demás.

Building Relationships with Our Brothers and Sisters through the

Colombia Parish Mission

As members of a universal Church, we are blessed to have brothers and sisters all over

the world. And though we may be geographically separated, we remain one through our common membership in the Body of Christ.

Those involved in our Sister Parish Covenant have experienced this directly through our community’s blossoming relationship with the people of Maicao, Colombia. Working with the Missionary Sisters of the Divine Spirit, parishioner Peg McClellan says it’s enabled our community to help those in need across the world. It’s also created a greater awareness among parishioners of the global needs of the Church.

“Pope Francis has really encouraged us to become a more global Church, looking beyond

ourselves and small communities,” Peg says. “Our Sister Parish Covenant is all about getting to know one another and fostering a deep prayer support for one another.”

Peg and her fellow missionaries will be able to physically do this during their approaching trip to Colombia on April 14-21. With no set agenda as of yet, Peg says the goal of the trip is simply to go and serve wherever the Sisters send them, as well as to continue fostering that overall spirit of relationship. It is a spirit which they hope to bring back with them and continue developing here at the parish in the upcoming months.

Construyendo Relaciones con Nuestros Hermanos y Hermanas a Través

de la Misión Parroquial de Colombia

Como miembros de una Iglesia universal, tenemos la bendición de tener hermanos y hermanas en todo

el mundo. Y aunque podamos estar geográficamente separados, seguimos siendo uno a través de nuestra membresía común en el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Las personas involucradas en nuestro Pacto de la Parroquia Hermana han experimentado esto directamente a través de la floreciente relación de nuestra comunidad con la gente de Maicao, Colombia. Trabajando con las Hermanas Misioneras del Espíritu Divino, la feligresa Peg McClellan dice que ha permitido a nuestra comunidad ayudar a los necesitados en todo el mundo. También ha creado una mayor conciencia entre los feligreses de las necesidades globales de la Iglesia.

“El Papa Francisco realmente nos ha animado a convertirnos en una Iglesia más global, mirando

más allá de nosotros mismos y de las pequeñas comunidades,” dice Peg. “Nuestro Pacto de la Hermana Parroquial se trata de conocernos y fomentar un profundo apoyo de oración el uno para el otro.”

Peg y sus compañeros misioneros podrán hacer esto físicamente durante su próximo viaje a Colombia del 14 al 21 de abril. Sin una agenda establecida hasta el momento, Peg dice que el objetivo del viaje es simplemente ir y servir a donde las envíen las Hermanas, así como continuar fomentando ese espíritu general de relación. Es un espíritu que esperan traer de vuelta con ellos y continuar desarrollando aquí en la parroquia en los próximos meses.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Prayer Event Open to All

We have the opportunity to receive God’s infinite mercy during the Divine Mercy

Sunday prayer event on April 19, set for 2-4 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Beth Wilson, a Corpus Christi Parish mem-ber and parish secretary at St. Patrick, invites us to take part in the event that has grown out of St. John Paul II’s call to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet revealed to Sr. Faustina Kowal-ska, a young Polish nun. Divine Mercy is a de-votion given during Jesus’s appearance to her. St. John Paul canonized her and established Divine Mercy Sunday on the second Sunday af-ter Easter.

The Divine Mercy Group has its origins in 2010, when Beth asked Fr. Dave Fleming at St. Patrick if she could schedule a Divine Mercy prayer hour when the Divine Mercy Chaplet was prayed. The event was so well-received that it was scheduled again the next year, but with the Rosary added to the prayers.

Since then, the Divine Mercy prayer event has grown and is now held on alternate years at St. Patrick and Corpus Christi Parishes. The Sacrament of Reconciliation has been added to enable worshipers to gain plenary indulgences. The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed at 3 p.m., the hour Jesus died.

“When Jesus appeared to St. Faustina, He told her His mercy is overflowing, and when we pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, graces will be poured upon us,” Beth says.

Catholic singer/songwriter Anna Nuzzo will provide music for the event, and light refresh-ments will follow.

Evento de Oración del Domingo de la

Divina Misericordia Abierto a Todos

Tenemos la oportunidad de recibir la infinita misericordia de Dios durante el evento de oración del Domingo de

la Divina Misericordia el 19 de abril, programado de 2 a 4 p.m. en la iglesia católica de San Patricio.

Beth Wilson, miembro de la parroquia de Corpus Christi y secretaria de la parroquia en St. Patrick, nos invita a participar en el evento que surgió del llamado de San Juan Pablo II a rezar la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia revelada a Sor Faustina Kowalska, una joven Monja polaca. La Divina Misericordia es una devoción dada durante la aparición de Jesús a ella. San Juan Pablo la canonizó y estableció el segundo domingo después de Pascua como el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia.

El Grupo de la Divina Misericordia tiene sus orígenes en 2010, cuando Beth le preguntó al p. Dave Fleming en St. Patrick si pudiera programar una hora de oración de la Divina Misericordia cuando se rezara la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia. El evento fue tan bien recibido que se programó nuevamente para el año próximo, pero con el Rosario agregado a las oraciones.

Linda and Monica encourage those with musical talent — whether vocalists or musicians — to consider serving God and the parish with their gifts.

“Singing, as they say, is praying twice and it’s a way to give back to God,” Linda says.

“I encourage others to share talents they have been given,” Monica says. “It feels wonderful to share in the gift of music.”
