MOVING OFF DISTRESSED COUNTIES LIST

During todays UCDD Executive Committee meeting MarkFarley Executive Director of UCDD and UCHRA recognizedtwo Upper Cumberland counties as coming off of the distressedcounties list Fentress and Jackson counties were two of the threedistressed counties from the 14-county Upper Cumberlandregion to appear on the list falling off within the last fiscal year

The Appalachian Regional Commissionprepares a county economic status indexfor all counties in the region annually Byanalyzing three-year averageunemployment rates per capita marketincome and poverty rates each one ofAppalachiarsquos 420 counties is thenclassified within one of five economicstatus designationsmdashdistressed at-risktransitional competitive or attainment byARC

The designations are also used todetermine the match requirements forARC grants as well as research topics andinvestment strategies targeting resourcesto the Regionrsquos most distressed areas
