The Wellness Institute has signed an agreement to partner with an organization representing 20,000 hospitals to reproduce its model for chronic disease prevention and management in China.

Chinese hospital representatives first became aware of the work at Seven Oaks Hospital while visiting hospitals across the United States and Canada two years ago.

That trip led to an invitation for Seven Oaks President and Chief Operating Officer Carrie Solmundson to visit China in July and again in September to describe the Wellness Institute model and discuss ways to translate that model into the Chinese healthcare system.

“The Chinese have a growing middle class and, with it, many of the same chronic diseases – diabetes, heart and lung and kidney disease – that we

face in Canada. Hospitals are the mainstay of their healthcare system, but they know they need to move care into the community and prevent minor conditions from becoming chronic problems,” Solmundson said.

A training centre will start in the spring with a conference for Chinese hospital administrators. Following the conference, frontline healthcare staff will travel to Canada to learn from Wellness Institute health professionals and take what they learn back to China and its 20,000 hospitals.

All costs, including the two exploratory visits by Solmundson

have been covered by the Chinese hosts.

“It’s exciting for us to have our work recognized internationally, and to have the opportunity to extend what we know how to do beyond our borders,” Solmundson said.

“We were a bit taken aback at first that hospitals with 3000 beds, compared to our 300, are looking for ways to emulate our approach to health promotion and disease prevention.”

The agreement also calls for both parties to cooperate on chronic disease management research.

Wellness has been evaluating its programs and services for over 15 years and has also been a site for several types of research into education and exercise interventions, but has barely scratched the surface of its potential for research, Solmundson said.

Wellness Institute Executive Director, Casie Nishi, said that her team is enthusiastic about working with the Chinese delegates to create a curriculum that will help prevent disease.

She says that the Wellness Institute partners with various organizations locally, and supports programming in other health regions provincially, but this is a first.

“We’ve had visits from other provinces and provided advice to other Canadian hospitals previously, but this is the first time we’ve been asked to articulate a comprehensive

model for a national healthcare organization on the other side of the planet,” she said.

“… hospitals with 3000 beds, compared to our 300, are looking for ways to emulate our approach to health promotion and disease prevention.”

“… they need to move care into the community and prevent minor conditions from becoming chronic problems.”

One Sweet Success! In October, the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation hosted its most successful ‘One Sweet Affair’ ever.

The almost $150,000 raised through the dessert competition and auction event will be used to construct a research centre for identifying, treating and preventing chronic kidney disease.

World class research already underway at Seven Oaks was featured in a presentation by Seven Oaks physician Dr. Claudio Rigatto, who is also Section Head for Nephrology in the University of Manitoba Faculty of Internal Medicine.

Thanks to those who made the evening such a success including Platinum Sponsors: the Platinum Jets and Gold Sponsors: MacDon, Manitoba Blue Cross and Takeda. Special thanks also go out to the competing bakers, SOGH Nephrology team, Foundation Council, Gala Committee and Scotiabank. Scotiabank – a silver sponsor, brought an army of volunteers and matched the $15,000 brought in by the silent auction!

A highlight for many was the annual dessert competition. This year the competing baker’s developed their tasty creations around a Halloween theme and each was a work of art. Ultimately the spooky pastry from Sugar Blooms and Cakes (right) impressed judges and guests and they received both the Grand Prix and People’s Choice Awards.

Diabetes Exercise Support Full Pilot Program Shows Need

People with type 2 diabetes are flocking to a Wellness Institute pilot program that helps them learn to exercise safely and effectively.

The Community Fitness for Diabetes project – funded by the Winnipeg Foundation, with a contribution from pharmaceutical companies Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company – is available at three Winnipeg locations. Wellness Institute has partnered with YMCA-YWCA Winnipeg to offer the program at the West Winnipeg Y, and with Youville Centre in South St. Vital.

The eight-week programs were completely full with waiting lists during November which is Diabetes Month.

To Wellness Institute Medical Advisor, Dr. Kevin Saunders, that means patients agree there is need for this type of program.

“We have diabetes education that helps patients with their diet, and medications we can prescribe, but other than encouraging patients to ‘just go exercise’ there isn’t really anywhere except this program that gives patients advice and support to face the challenges they have with getting active,” Dr. Saunders said.

It is well established that exercise can help control blood sugars, but it’s important that people with diabetes be medically screened before starting an exercise program. Some people have

type 2 diabetes as a consequence of a sedentary lifestyle and after decades of inactivity, won’t feel comfortable or have the confidence to succeed in becoming active. The guidance of a Certified Exercise Physiologist can help get them started and on the path to a permanent lifestyle change.

“The medical literature shows that a lot more will be successful at getting active if we can get them started in a supportive group environment where they can build their confidence level and understand how much and what kind of exercise is safe for their body. After that they can get out on their own doing the same physical activity that anyone else does,” Saunders said.

So far that’s working well for participant Donna McCuskee, age 60, who felt overwhelmed when she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and appreciated the support to learn that

“being busy isn’t the same as exercising.”

David Beaulieu, age 42, valued being in a class with other people that have the same condition and challenges. In the exercise program he learned that “even though I might have problems doing one type of exercise, the instructor was able to find an alternate exercise to do.”

Both are more active after the program, which confirms an early finding of the

project. Overall participants have not only increased their physical activity, they have also improved their knowledge about diabetes and their confidence to manage it on their own.

Wellness Institute Executive Director, Casie Nishi, says the project will establish a portable model for diabetes exercise programming that can be added to the diabetes education programs already funded by healthcare.

“As a medical fitness facility, we can provide the kind of guidance people with diabetes need, and support them to be active in their community. We want to find a way we can provide that 8-week launch pad so that people with diabetes can feel confident to exercise safely in any recreational context whether that’s as a member of a YMCA-YWCA, or exercising at home,” she said.

The pilot wraps up after a winter session that runs from January to March. Nishi says that Wellness Institute will work with its partners on a final report, and look for ways to sustain and expand the program.

The Wellness Institute is going to keep running a diabetes exercise program at its facility in northwest Winnipeg, but project organizers know the need is tremendous and everywhere, including rural and isolated communities.

Reinvesting in Wellness Shows... Change is Beautiful Members and guests can enjoy the benefits of our recent renovations, from a relaxing steam to refreshed spaces and new equipment. But the changes at the Wellness Institute are more than just skin deep …

maintaining a pleasing experience; it is crucial to keep up the moisture barriers that prevent water damage.

Floors in the entryway, upper halls and lower locker desk area were re-tiled with a lighter look. The curves of the space were accented with tile mimicking a riverstone look to tie into the many natural elements in the space. Combined with light features highlighting the renewed donor walls, the result is a brighter upper level to welcome you to the facility.

Upper level washrooms were refreshed and updated to match an earlier locker area renovation. Counter top, tiles and partition walls were replaced.

Added work included adding kit lockers for our members. Cabinetry in our Health Education Room 1 kitchen was also replaced thanks to help from the original sponsor, KitchenCraft.

Annual equipment renewal brought in more NuStep® recumbent cross trainers, popular for their ability to provide a low impact workout for people with a wide range of abilities and limitations. New treadmills, stationary bikes, ellipticals and studio equipment were also added.

Beneath the SurfaceSome investments that you may not

see on your visit are supporting efforts to help people better manage their chronic conditions.

Electronic records were rolled out in our Cardiac Rehabilitation program this year while new, specialized equipment allows our self-management programs to better accommodate the needs of people over 300lbs. Because rising obesity rates go hand in hand

While the 2013 reinvestment is highlighted by the redesigned steam rooms, the improvements are not simply cosmetic. Reinvesting in the facility has always been an important focus at the Wellness Institute, not just to maintain the standard of a premium fitness facility but to adapt to the changing needs of our community and keep abreast with equipment upgrades.

For 2013, renovations brought changes to three key areas: common area walkways, upper level washrooms serving our health education rooms and steam rooms in both men's and women's change rooms.

Guests and members alike can enjoy the new steam rooms after a workout. The steam rooms underwent thorough remodelling to not only provide spa-like serenity, but better function, safety and wheelchair access. Having a renewal plan for these wet areas goes beyond

with increased chronic disease, programs have begun to see greater numbers of people who need these supports in place to safely learn to address their condition.

Continual RenewalOver the years, Wellness has

undergone a number of renovations and upgrades. Though major projects are most noticeable, reinvestment in the facility is continual. Check out the time line below for some highlights.

Both replacement planning and capital improvements keep the facility relevant to the community and attractive and relaxing for our members and guests.
