Should you have the good fortune to be enjoying these words on a sunny day in Copenhagen, you are realising one of the rewards for surviving the winter here. Long, bright days. A city smiling. People

free and walking about with a spirit of festive joy.One can’t however, and nor should you, ever count on the weather - dreari-ness has affected many a Scandinavian summer. Thank goodness then, for one of the other great summertime blessings Copenhagen has to offer: rain or shine the Copenhagen Jazz Festival brings 10 days of non-stop, city-wide jazz, July 2nd to July 11th. In its 32nd year, this major international festival boasts a line-up of superstars and a constellation of concerts for everyone who enjoys music. It is the perfect antidote to grey skies, and a delightful accompaniment to a sunny summer’s day.The festival’s pure range is unbelievable. Around 900 concerts in total at 100 venues. The festival has the good sense to be non-discriminating, and this egalitarian spirit allows each and every cafe with a bass or a trumpet to include itself under the auspices of the festival. That means jazz is present in the city. From the morning concerts for kids, to the brass band street parades, to the late night jam sessions, the city is alive with jazz. Concerts outdoors, concerts beside canals, concerts for children and in parks: many of the concerts are free or for a price of next to nothing. The festival refuses to compromise on its musicality by inviting big name artists from other genres and slapping the title ‘Jazz Festival’ before their names. Sting, Kanye West and Missy Elliot may all be fine artists in their own right, but when the Stockholm Jazz Festival added them to their pro-gramme in recent years, it seemed more like cynical pandering to fill seats rather than developing the music, local artists, or the jazz scene like Copen-hagen is committed to doing. Continuing a tradition that goes back to the Copenhagen days of Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz or Ben Webster, local artists have a place on stage and in the programme alongside the great foreign musicians. ‘A very crucial and special characteristic of the festival is that a vast majority of the concerts are with local musicians,’ says Niels Lan Doky, the great Danish pianist and international recording artist. ‘If you go to any other big festival it’s mainly all international. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival really gives the opportunity for the grassroots level to develop their craft, which is essential.’

Artistic director Kenneth Hansen makes a conscious effort to keep the festi-val popular, but not at a price. The music is pleasing, but challenging – music to make you think, to allow you to develop your own ideas, to awaken your feelings and enliven your dreams. Artists like Jason Moran (July 8th at the Copenhagen JazzHouse) or Vijay Iyer (also at the JazzHouse, July 4th) are expanding the very nature of the music, visiting the roots of the medium and splicing a music that’s a hybrid of the past, the present, and the future. If you are looking for today’s great composers, look no further than these two artists. They are among many great acts holding sway at the JazzHouse. This year, for the first time, the festival has taken over the programming for the JazzHouse (calling the concerts at the venerable jazz venue ‘21st Cen-tury Jazz’), attracting fresher more dynamic acts such as the sax/bass/drums trio Fly (July 5th) or the heralded young singer Gretchen Parlato (July 10th).

The big names at the festival are granted the distinction of ‘Giant Jazz’ - Her-bie Hancock’s concert at the Opera House on July 3rd being the major catch and biggest name of this festival. Other headliners under the Giant Jazz series include the Brazilian singer and guitarist Caetano Veloso at the Royal Theatre on July 5th, a dual concert with former Miles Davis bassist Marcus Miller and 25-year-old sensation bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding on July 6th at the Royal Theatre, saxophonist Joe Lovano with the DR Big Band at the DR Koserthuset on July 4th, and Martha Wainwright singing the music of Edith Piaf on July 9th at the Royal Theatre. Two other items on the programme add to the festival’s vision: ‘The Latin Side of Jazz’, at Pressen at Politkens Hus and ‘...something else’, presented in Charlottenborg at the Art Academy. Pressen at Politkens Hus has become a place for interesting programmes. Last year musicians played tribute ses-sions to artists ranging from Coltrane to the Velvet Underground and jazz discussions/panels were held. This year the scene shifts to a genre of jazz less often seen in Europe: the Latin side. Pianist Eddie Palmieri (July 5th), harpist Edmar Castañeda (July 2nd) and flamenco singer Miguél De Tena (July 6th) are some of the musicians certain to spice up the place. For the third straight year, ...something else is the closest thing the festival makes to a compromise of non-jazz music. The artists are still musically challenging and follow the spirit of jazz, but have a more indie/alternative bent. It has long been Hansen’s ambition to book the rock band Sonic Youth or the indie-group Animal Collective to headline the ...something else bill. ‘We want to expand jazz,’ said Hansen. ‘Jazz for me is not a genre, it is a state of mind, a way to approach music and life as well. I can see and hear jazz in many things. Jazz is experimentation and improvisation. It is a moving thing. It changes. It can be music and art and life in general.’

...SOMEThING ELSE‘Something Else’ ask the question ‘What Is Jazz?’ and is known for giving jazz police deep wrinkles on the forehead. This year it has moved from Skuespilhuset to the amazing outdoor venue Charlottenborg in the very centre of Copenha-gen right next to Nyhavn. You can experience bands such as I Got You On Tape (July 9, 22:00), Efterklang (July 10. 22.00), Kostcirkeln (July 8, 18.00) plus a special meeting between jazz and electronica delivered by Lars Møller Quartet and Berlin based techno wiz-kid Bjørn Svin (July 8, 22:00). LATIN SIDE Of JAZZPressen in Politiken Hus offers ‘The Side Of Lat-in Jazz’ - a special theme focusing on the many colourful sides of South American music and rhythms that have inspired and influenced jazz music for decades. Here one can experience among others the Puerto-Rican-born piano leg-end Eddie Palmieri (July 5, 20.30), the young Colombian harp-equilibrist Edmar Castaneda (July 2, 20.30), tango singer Silvana Deluigi (July 3, 20.30) and a new, exciting acquaintance, the flamenco singer Miguel de Tena (July 6, 20.30). JAZZ By ThE SEA‘Jazz By The Sea’ again takes place this year at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge, and here you can en-joy the sunset and a swim in the harbour bath listening to music by names such as Ulla Hen-ningsen (July 3, 20.00), Benny Andersen & Livs-linerne (July 4, 20.00), Murder (July 5, 20.00), Kira Skov sings Billie Holiday feat. Jakob Dinesen

(July 7, 20.00), and a Danish special tribute to Joni Mitchell featuring leading Danish female vo-calists Sinne Eeg, Mona Larsen and Randi Laubek (July 8, 20.00). MEETINGSThe National Gallery of Denmark is home to five joint concerts with the heading ‘Meetings’, where you can experience high-profile Danish musicians, such as Kresten Osgood and Lotte Anker, in strong international company. Meet amazing US guitarist Scott Dubois (July 4, 15.00), ECM-recording piano player Marilyn Crisspell with the French bass player Joelle Leandre and Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker (July 7, 17:00), and the music of German composer Hans Hertzel performed by Das Kapital (July 10, 17:00). CLASSIC JAZZ TrIBuTEAnother kind of meeting is going on at Carlsberg, where Jesper Thilo, Kristian Jorgensen, Jesper Løvdal and Thomas Clausen celebrate and pay tribute to the four great American musicians Stuff Smith, Kenny Drew, Ben Webster and Dex-ter Gordon respectively, who each have lived in Copenhagen for long periods in the 1960s and hence left their mark on the Copenhagen jazz scene. (Carlsbergs Gårdhave, Visit Carlsberg, July 6, 7, 8 & 9, 18.00) JAZZ fOr KIDSFor the second consecutive year the heart of the ‘Jazz For Kids’ theme is located in Østre Anlæg, the beautiful park just behind the National Gal-lery of Denmark. The programme is greater than ever and presents seven full days of jazz, art, circus and singing for children and adults. Other places that present jazz for kids during the fes-tival include Haveselskabts Have and Christians Kirken, so every day during the festival there are musical activities for the younger generation.

In beautiful themesCopenhagen Jazz Festival July 2-11 2010 presents an impressive array of international and Danish jazz names, dispersed over the entire city at a record number of venues. The programme also in-cludes a series of themes that will hopefully make it a bit easier to get an overview of the more than 1,000 concerts that will be held over ten days.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival Supplement - July 2 - 11, 2010

All great cities have graveyards of nostalgia where natives, residents and return visitors are haunted by memories of places that exist only in their imagination. A place, that you loved, that isn’t any longer. Those evenings embedded into your mind, never to be forgotten, but seemingly lost. Whenever you walk past that place or recall it, memories jetty their way to your heart, to your mind, and you hold in yourself those lovely but fleeting feelings.

From 1959 to 1976 Jazzhus Montmartre at Store Regengade 19A was one of the preeminent addresses in jazz. The legendary club was blessed by frequent appearances of the jazz greats, and Copenhagen residents Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster. The top artists always made their way to the club. Recordings—official and bootlegged—abound from late nights at

the Jazzhus. It was loved and renowned by jazz fans in Denmark and around the world. The internationally celebrated, Danish-born pianist, Niels Lan Doky and his friend, entrepreneur Rune Bech have dreamt up a mad dream: resurrecting the spirit of the lost jazz shrine. Jazzhus Montmartre re-opened May 1st after a 24 year absence, in the exact same spot—same stage, same art on the walls, same ‘energy still lingering in the walls,’ according to Lan Doky. When the previous tenant, a hairdresser, closed its doors, Lan Doky and Bech felt that they could not pass up the opportunity. Their ambition, in their own words: To ‘create a party every night’ based around the ‘essential jazz values of freedom, spontaneity, emotion, positivity, creativity, being cool and feeling good.’Jazzhus Montmartre is returning to the Jazz Festival with a special program. On the opening day of the festival the artist Mogen Gylling will unveil a new edition of his famous plaster masks that once adorned the club’s walls. Highlights include the Kenny Barron quartet featuring David Sanchez (July 4-July 6th) and a series of special concerts celebrating the late great Danish jazz legend Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (July 7-9th). And to really bring back the old days, each and every night of the Jazz Festival will find a late night jam session igniting round about midnight at the Jazzhus Montmartre. You can be sure that visiting artists will venture to the legendary club to experience the history and play with the exciting house rhythm section led by 20 year old Danish drummer Niclas Bardeleben and 18 year old bassist Jonathan Bremer, two young musicians hand-picked by Lan Doky and artists he sees as ‘prominent voices in the jazz of the future.’‘Jazz jams are a platform for musicians to get together under the most spontaneous of circumstances,’ said Lan Doky. ‘It’s pure impromptu, spur of the moment music. This is what is unique for jazz, the improvisation and the creation that takes place in the moment. Jam sessions have always been of vital 4

Rarely, if ever, do those beloved places come back to life.by Johnny Niemann

importance for the evolution of jazz musicians and jazz. The famous jam sessions at Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem in the 1940s is what at the time led to the new form of jazz called Be Bop.’Most business plans don’t include a manifesto stating that their locale should have a ‘warm, welcoming and homely atmosphere attracting good people that follow their hearts in life.’ So what are Lan Doky and Bech thinking? ‘We may be crazy, but we believe in this,’ said Bech. ‘We are a non-profit because our purpose isn’t to make money here—that’s not the spirit. We want an institution that gives back.’Lan Doky, who was knighted by Queen Margrethe the day he lead a tour of the premises, is the musi-cal director. The space is intimate, even tiny, all 70-85 seats nestled right up close to the stage. Lan Doky claims exacting standards and promises to hand-pick a program that he’d actually want to listen to—many of the visiting artists likely to be people he has played with himself. The schedule includes tributes, exciting combinations of artists, and music that challenges but enlivens the listener. The attention to detail even extends to the cafe’s menu: Lan Doky will send a sample of every musician to the Michelin awarded Italian restaurateur Elvio Milleri, director of two of Copenhagen’s best-known restaurants, Era Ora and Acquamarina, who will then create menus and wine pairings that match the music. The café opens for business at noon, Monday through Saturdays, and Sundays if there’s a con-cert. The full menu is available until just before the music starts, thereafter Italian wine and cheese, beers, drinks and snacks are also available.

A Copenhagen native and former bar hand at Montmartre in the late 1960s, who only wanted to go by the name Lars, described the atmosphere: ‘It was an important part of Copenhagen’s cultural life. It had a special status because it was jazz—all the other places closed, but Montmartre went on all night. There were many foreigners there, Americans, black and white, people from different places. It felt like the center of Copenhagen.’

Lars described how he’d return home from the club around 5 in the morning, and need to leave his sweater hanging outside his apartment because it smelled so much like the smoke from the club and french fries they served. One night, according to Lars, he came to the club only to see the jazz legend Thelonious Monk drunk, drinking Rød Aalborg snaps out of a beer glass. Monk was unable to play, so a few other pianists took turns on stage while Monk slept. Around two or three in the morning Monk came to and played brilliantly, for hours, delighting the crowd, and eventually buying the audience rounds of beer. This tale, this spirit, seems like out of a world incomprehensible in Copenhagen today, but part of the lore and legend of an adored spot.‘The legacy and past of the Montmartre is like the ultimate jazz dream to me and everyone else who knows about it,’ Lan Doky said. ‘I didn’t realize actually how many people share that dream—the emotional impact of the idea that the Montmartre is re-opening has opened up this emotionally la-tent bomb for people. So many people are interested. So many want to help. We are not re-creating something of the past, we are not making a museum, we are re-connecting with some essential values of jazz and trying to do it in a new way for a new era. I think of a quote by Albert “Tootie” Heath [the great American jazz drummer who served as the house drummer at Montmartre] who said “those who stand on the shoulders of their ancestors stand taller.” ‘

Just off the main walking street stroget, the easy international atmosphere is perfect for new-comers to Denmark with a love of jazz, particularly those over the age of 40.

As a first time writer for The Copenhagen Post and only 18 years old to boot,

the idea of going alone and, to be honest, completely unprepared to a jazz

club filled me with typical British horror. I imagined a surly crowd of old jazz

veterans, nursing their bottles of beer and in some dingy basement beneath

a shop. I cringed at the idea of opening the door and being met with blank

faces, staring at me in disbelief. However, as I trudged up Skindergade to-

wards Cafe Selina, these premature assumptions were melted away by the

warm sound of New Orleans jazz filtered through large windows on the first

floor.

The interior did even more to release my anxieties. The dark mahogany

wood and blood red walls were the only element that hinted at the deep,

dark jazz club of my fears. The late summer light flooding through the win-

dows, shining on the small but lively group of people gave more of a New

Orleans vibe than I had imagined and I soon found myself a comfortable

nook on a sofa in the corner. Without the live band, you might find it hard to

classify this place. Although the open seating by the window, international

memorabilia and intermingling of English and Danish suggests an interna-

tional pub, the posters of Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz greats firmly remind

you that this is a house of music. There is even a stage on the second floor

for larger performances, also used by Copenhagen harbour and long johns

jazz club. Here, the lights are lower and you can almost see the cloud of

smoke omnipresent before the smoking ban.

During their break, I find myself in easy conversation with the band. Chris,

clarinettist, singer and all round entertainer, is yet another Australian that

has been roped to Denmark by the spell of a beautiful Dane. The guitarist

Henrik, on the other hand, is a true Dane with a vast knowledge of Copen-

hagen jazz history and a 16 year old daughter, who taps her foot along to her

dad’s music. ‘I hope you can write after your second Guinness’, jokes Char-

lie, the Scottish owner, as he brings me a drink. He tells me that although

Tuesday night is all about New Orleans traditional jazz, it is also a haven for

swing enthusiasts, with various live performances on Thursday and Friday.

Just off the main walking street Strøget, the easy international atmosphere

is perfect for new-comers to Denmark with a love of jazz, particularly those

over the age of 40. Even for non-jazz enthusiasts, Cafe Selina is a hyggelig

place to watch the beautiful game and the usual array of Danish and foreign

beers are provided at a relatively inexpensive price. It is also a great place

to warm up for the Copenhagen Jazz festival, with live music from Mon-

day to Friday during this week, including Latin jazz on Monday, a full band

on Wednesday and the band Perona on Thursday. I can guarantee that by

the time you leave, probably a few hours after you planned, you will have

friends, jazz contacts and, of course, rhythm.

At this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Canadian singer Martha Wainwright will perform her critically acclaimed tribute to the beautiful selection of rare and celebrated Edith Piaf songs as can be heard on her stunning 2009 album ‘Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris.’

The Piaf album was recorded during three intimate performances in New York’s Dixon Place Thea-tre in June. Produced by Hal Willner, Wainwright assembled a unique band of musicians includ-ing long-time collaborator Brad Albetta — who produced Wainwright’s first two albums — pianist Thomas Bartlett and electric guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Doug Wieselman to capture the French chanteuse’s venerable catalogue, beautifully coupled with Wainwright’s incredible, evocative and distinctive voice.

“I chose the songs based on what I thought I could sing best,’ Wainwright said. ‘I didn’t want to sing something like ‘Je ne regrette rien’ because I didn’t feel that I was going to be able to do it any justice compared to the original version.”

Martha Wainwright well remembers her first reaction to producer Hal Willner’s proposal that she pay homage to the songs of Edith Piaf.‘I thought it was a terrible idea,’ the singer-songwriter reflects. ‘She’s so famous. And Piaf has had a lot of attention lately, with the film [‘La Vie En Rose’, for which star Marion Cotillard’s won an Oscar] and now a musical. I didn’t want to jump on a bandwagon.’ But Willner eventually convinced her by sending her over 200 songs sung by Piaf, her favourite singer growing up as the child of famous folkies Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. ‘Then I realized it’s more an homage to, not only Piaf, but also the writers and composers of her cat-alogue,’ said Wainwright. ‘So I decided to go ahead, completely confident that Hal and I could enjoy this great experience of performing some of the most interesting songs I had ever come across.’Wainwright has been a fan of the French icon since she was seven or eight years old and her broth-er, the musician and singer Rufus Wainwright played some Piaf records from their mother’s collec-tion for her.

“I think it was the beginning of my love affair with very emotive type singers,’ she said.Piaf’s records filled her with a feeling of ‘complete freedom and abandon, almost reck-less in some ways.’ She and Rufus used to crank the records up loud.

Apart from being a tribute to a singing legend, Martha Wainwright’s Piaf album is also imbued with the voice and influence of another, her mother Kate McGarrigle.McGarrigle, who died in January, provided backup vocals and accordion on the album, and even helped pick the songs.

‘And, you know, I’m just terribly grateful for all of her help that she’s given me ’cause I’ve never done anything without her opinion and without her guidance and so hopefully I’ve learned enough to know what to do next.’
