Your Auction Dollars at Work

Our gym has a new look! Due to the wonderful support from last year’s Spring

Auction, the PTO was able to fund enhancements to the gym, which included

fresh paint and new murals. In order to continue to provide this type of

improvement and support, it is crucial that we have two Auction Chairs in

place by the end of February. Please contact Christy Bartlett at

[email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.

ART LITERACY

Art Literacy Artist

KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI

1760 - 1849

Japanese Printmaker

This month in Art Literacy, students will learn about the artist, Katsushika Hokusai. He is

often hailed as the greatest of all Japanese printmakers. He lived most of his life in the city

now known as Tokyo. Even as a child he showed talent as an artist, and was apprenticed to

learn the art of printmaking.

He is famous for his prints that broke with tradition, featuring landscapes of real places and

genre (everyday) scenes showing people doing ordinary activities. Traditionally, Japanese art

featured idealized and imagined images that followed very strict rules. He is best known for

his series of landscape prints called The Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji (1823 – 1831).

The older Hokusai got, the harder he worked. Sitting on his heels, hour after hour, he

completed over 30,000 pieces of art – an average of one per day during the course of his life.

The inscription on gravestone shows his final name, Gwakio Rojin, meaning “Old Man Mad

About Drawing.”

After examining Hokusai’s work and learning to identify the different types and qualities of

line that he used in his prints, students produced their own Hokusai inspired landscape print.
