ART LITERACY

Art Literacy Artist

Salvador Dalí

1904 - 1989

Surrealist Painter

April’s featured artist is Salvador Dalí, the famous Spanish surrealist artist. An unruly child,

Dalí showed an early aptitude for art and began painting in oils at the age of 8. At the young

age of 21, he had his first one-man exhibit. Dalí was one of the founders of the Surrealist

movement. Surrealism is a style of art that attempts to combine the conscious world with the

unconscious to form a “super-reality” or the surreal. Dalí liked to say that his paintings “hand-

colored photographs of the subconscious.” He rejected logical thought and would combine odd

and unrelated objects in the same painting.

After students examine the elements of surrealism and the use of line to create space in Dalí’s

work, students will create their own surreal self-portrait.

If you would like to know more about what your student is learning in art lit, a brief summary

of the Dalí lesson is presented at the end of this newsletter. Classroom volunteers are always

welcome to support their child’s art lit class. Please contact your teacher or classroom art lit

volunteer for date and time.

Announcing: Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education

Spring Collection Week Extravaganza! April 27th – May 1st

Let’s end the year strong with a great Box Tops and Labels drive!

We’ll have a collection table at the school entrance from 8:10-8:30 Monday

through Friday mornings the entire week.

We’ll be collecting your Box Tops and Labels, making sure your class gets

credit, and passing out prizes to EVERYONE that turn in Box Tops or Labels

during these mornings.

As always, the class that turns in the most Box Tops and Labels wins a CLASS

PRIZE!

Please Remember These Handy Clipping Tips:

• We can't turn in expired Box Tops. When clipping Box Tops, please don't

clip off the expiration date. If a mistake is made, you can always tape it back

together.

• "Labels For Education" (Campbells Soup, Pepperidge Farm, etc.) is a different program than "Box Tops For Education" and we will be collecting those labels too. They MUST include the UPC code (barcode) to count. • Go online at www.boxtops4education.com/ and www.LabelsForEducation.com/ to find out more ways to earn Box Tops and Labels for Education credit for our school. There are coupons and sweepstakes, plenty of fun ways to earn! It's worth checking out and it really adds up!
