Inspired Action is a social enterprise venture competition for university students to raise awareness of citizenship by developing and implementing relevant, accessible and afford-able solutions to social challenges. The Foundation for Amazing Potentials has supported the competition in partnership with the China Youth Development Foundation for the past five years.

Each year, more than 3,000 students from 30 plus universities throughout the mainland China and Hong Kong participate in the Competition. Teams of students identified a socio-economic challenge and proposed a solution. Several hundred proposals were submitted, from which approximately 100 were selected for mentoring and training. Grants of up to CNY 10,000 were awarded to each of the 50 pilot proposals. Eventually, approximately 20 teams were chosen as final-ists and the finalist team members travelled to Hong Kong for a 5-day leadership development tour during which they will interact with leaders from government, academia, corporates, social enterprises and NGOs.

Three themes guided the Com-petition. The first was direct action. Inspired Actions provided students with first-hand experience in social entrepreneurship through experiments and hands-on problem solving. Second was diversity. Students were engaged in a broad range of subjects from arts and cultural preservation, to educational equality, social services, environmental protection, digital inclusion and healthcare reform. The third was perspective. Through their own projects, students were exposed to global issues and challenges across different societies, cultures and languages.

Professionals with background in management consulting, banking, accounting, market-ing, and IT participated in the Competition. They played critical roles as proposal screen-ers, examiners and mentors.

Prior to the start of the Competition, volunteer screeners read the proposals and listened to presentations by the students, then provided one-on-one feedback to the student teams. In the middle and final stages of the competition, volunteer examiners helped review progress reports and results, and provided feedback to the student teams and scores to the Compe-tition Committee. Their input was crucial in determining which teams would advance to the next stage. Throughout the Competition, mentor volunteers paired with student teams and provided insight, advice, professional and educational wisdom, and valuable time while contributing to the spirit of collaboration that made each student team a unique entrepre-neurial community.

We are very excited and proud to present to you the 18 finalists of the 2012 Inspired Action Case Competition as follows:
