The New Revenue Standard - Ready, Set, Go

On May 28, 2014 the FASB and IASB issued their long-awaited converged standard on revenue recognition. Almost all companies will be affected to some extent by this sweeping standard and increase in required disclosures. But the changes extend beyond disclosures, and the effect on companies will vary depending on industry and current accounting practices. Companies will need to consider changes that might be necessary to information technology systems, processes, and internal controls to capture new data and address changes in financial reporting. Are you ready?

Panel Session: Moving From Core Accounting to Business Control

Financial Controllers are expected to do more than provide discipline in payments, accounting and audit. They are now tasked with using their knowledge and understanding of the business to aid governance, risk management, anti-corruption and strategic planning. This interactive session will prepare controllers for an expanded role, and the transition from 'financial controller' to 'business controller'.

The Changing Role of Today’s Controller

Over the past ten years, the role of the Controller has been evolving.   No longer are the days where the Controller just produces the financial reports and oversees the day-to-day activities of the financial functions of an organization.   Today, added value skills such as being more forward thinking, providing strategic analysis of reports, driving improvements in productivity through automation of operations, and streamlining processes are needed in this role to support the continued growth of an organization in a globally competitive world.

Delivering Productivity, Financial Controls, and Automation for Accountants through Technology

Accountants have invested a lot of time, energy, and resources into obtaining their accounting degrees Yet many are using their degrees to work in spreadsheets, to create binders of paper, and to try to manage the entire close process using manual processes. Technology has been introduced into the accounting world with regard to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and large-scale general ledger systems and has been widely accepted to help manage the voluminous amounts of transactional data. Why not take advantage of technology to provide enhanced financial controls and automation?   Join a BlackLine Systems representative as he talks about Software as a Service (SaaS) technology and how it can provide visibility, automation, standardization, and enhanced controls over the entire accounting close process. By leveraging technology, accountants can get back to what they’re trained to do best: analyze and provide strong financial information to help their company make strong business decisions.

Developing High Performance Teams

We will share how we have been able to maintain a high performance team despite being the virtual farm system for the corporation, overcoming an annual turnover rate of over 20%.   Why and how we continuously recruit.   How we have accomplished this at very little cost.   Why we have a “no recruiters” rule.   Once we hire a high performer how do we keep them that way?   How we determine a team member should be asked to leave and when do we do it.   How we plan to take our success to other departments and Pratt facilities.  How we will we know when we are there.

Brian Miller is currently responsible for three Pratt locations where one of his strengths has been developing and maintaining a high performance accounting team.  This has been accomplished while running a virtual farm system for the Corporation.  In the last several years 11 team members have moved on to take positions at other Pratt facilities.  These colleagues were promoted to various functions including Internal Audit, Corporate Accounting, IT, Logistics, Shared Services and Division.  They took positions including Plant Controllers, Assistant Corporate Controller and Assistant Division Controller.

Distilling Data into Insights: EPM Enables Remarkable Performance at Pratt Industries

We will share how we delivered value across the organization by enabling consistent reporting against a common business model.   You will also see how they significantly reduced time in preparing forecast and consolidation numbers while gaining business adoption by leveraging SAP BPC functionality.

Stephen Filreis is the Director of SAP Program Management Office for Pratt Industries, Inc. He is responsible for the overall running of the US applications in SAP as well as its enhancements and growth in usage and refinements in process.   Since his arrival at Pratt nearly 4 years ago, overall Accounts Payable process time, start to finish, has been reduced by 80%, with a 60% reduction in staff effort.   A CPA by training and background, he has worked extensively in the financial consulting arena.  Steve has been involved in several Enterprise system projects from Blueprint to Rollout.
