The masthead of this contents page is called “the A side”, this is an unconventional way of presenting the contents page to readers. This is because they have used an alternative heading of the page, instead of just ‘contents’.

Main image Stars appeal to the audience because he is a well-known hip-hop artist “Chris Brown”. By using a long shot it allows the reader to see what the artist is wearing. Chris Brown is wearing stereotypical representation of hip-hop; this is shown by having is hood up and wearing a bandana.

Pull Quote- gives a clue to the reader on what the main article is containing and creates an interest towards the reader wanting to read the full article.

Issue and XXL logo, keeping in the house style theme and colours.

Sub lines- these give a brief insight of what pages include what, this ‘informs’ (Katz) the reader of the change in topic for each page.

The masthead of this contents page is called “the B side”, this is an unconventional way of presenting the contents page to readers because XXL have two contents pages, "the A side "and “the B side”

The images help support the sublines, this is used as a visual aid for the reader to make the text come to life.

The page numbers give direction to the reader as as sign post of how to navigate around the magazine.

Contents page I intend to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) some of the ideas from the XXl contents page such as including the logo and keeping to the colour scheme. I will do this because it will keep the magazine looking professional, ensure consistency, and support brand recognition. For my contents page I also followed convention by having the masthead in bold along the top with the two main image over the dead space. I will copy the bold font as it really stands out. XXL contents page is called “the A side”, I will repeat this unconventional way of presenting the contents page to readers because it highlights who are the more important artists, feature of the A side instead of B indicates to the reader who XXL think are more superior.

Questions in bold font- this separates the answers from the questions so that it is clear for the reader to read.

Drop Capital - this is used to draw the readers attention. By the drop capital being red it alerts the readers attention towards the interview.

Lots of photos, no main image.

Page number and web address- helps navigate the reader around the magazine if they are using the contents page to guide them.

Double side spread I will repeat (Steve Neale – 1980) Drop capital because they are used to start a sentence/ paragraph in a dramatic way. They are useful because they direct the readers attention to the article.

Pull quote are used to give an insight on what the article is about and what it features. I will include this because it shows the reader that the article is interesting which will incise them to read it.

Stereotypically Hip-hop artist tend to think that they are more important than others. This is shown by the lack of direct address and eye contact that the star images gives us. I will replicate this as it highlights characteristics of hip hop artists and hoe they portray themselves . By him looking away and having relaxed body language connotes that he is the star and is above the reader.
