Do you have special events coming up at your church? Send aflyer or email to [email protected] so we can share the “GoodNews” of the church!
This was my first year attending the UCC State Youth Event at Watson Homestead in Painted
Post, NY. I must say that it was both an eye opening and rewarding experience. Being from
New York City, it was definitely a drastic change in scenery. Waking up everyday to snow
covered mountains and trees rather than busy streets and skyscrapers was something that
was different yet relaxing.
Being surrounded by the calm and quiet, I was able to take to heart the theme of the
weekend. “Connect The Dots” was all about joining with others to strengthen your love for
yourself, the community and for God.
By participating in the worship service, my friends from the Metro Association and I were
able to share with the rest of the people our way of praising our Lord. Also, watching the
other associations conduct services helped me expand my horizons and learn about new
ways to give thanks and show my love for Jesus.
My favorite part of the State Youth Event would have to be the workshops. One of the
workshops that I attended that had an impact on me was ‘Sweet Dreams’ with Rev. Glenda
Prins. I found this workshop to be educational and entertaining. Family is something that we
all take for granted until we realize that there are others out there who do not have what we
have. I love the fact that the pillowcases that we made in the workshop were being donated to
foster children. It was a rewarding experience knowing that something I made was going to
help someone, somewhere.
Overall, I believe the weekend was a success. We are all distracted by many things in our life.
A weekend away from it all helps to connect the dots expand our views and strengthens our
relationships with each other, the community, and with God.
Emily PandianChristhava Tamil Koil
Hi my name is Rachel Daniel. I’m a sophomore attending Lincoln High School in Yonkers, New York. Every
Sunday I attend Christhava Tamil Koil, my mother church . Being part of a UCC congregation I haven’t
attended a state youth event before. This was my first time.
I went along with my 4 close friends and my mother Vinutha D. who is the advisor from church on this
spiritual journey. Honestly the only reason I liked this event was because I got to miss school on Friday. But
once I reached Watson homestead I realized how each individual were so welcoming and kind. Other youth
showed us around as well and we became friends.
I got to meet new youth from across New York from places I never thought existed. We were shy at first but
we adjusted and everything went well.
After few hours from arriving we had worship and metropolitan association held the service. Since our group
was from New York. Me, Emily, Junia and Pearlin were the 4 young ladies who represented Christhava Tamil
Koil and performed the Liturgical Dance. Performing was usual for us but it lifted up our souls.
The theme for this past weekend was “connect the dots”. every individual was created by god in his image and
we are destined to be in this place for a purpose he had set for us. Every one of us are dots, each person serves
a purpose in this world whether we believe it or not. When we all come together we connect the dots and we
make this image that brings us all together as a community but most of all people of god.
To me this experience was phenomenal, I met people who were so kind and welcoming but most of all I made
a connection with god. I realized each one of us in this world was born for a reason, and that gave me self-
confidence to do whatever I may put my mind to.
I thank every single person for allowing this event to take place.
