Worldwide Education Download Trends

COVID-19 caused a surge in Education app downloads as consumers looked to alternative education options while schools were closed. After a 6 percent Y/Y decrease in Q4 2019, installs bounced back with 30 percent Y/Y growth, the highest growth the category has seen since 2017.

The lift from COVID-19 was particularly pronounced on the App Store. App Store downloads outpaced Google Play for the first quarter since 2017 off of 46 percent Y/Y growth. By comparison, Google Play saw 17 percent Y/Y growth in 1Q20.

Impact of COVID-19

Education app downloads generally spiked in the first few weeks following the country’s 200th confirmed case. China’s Education downloads grew by more than 250 percent vs. the pre-COVID-19 baseline.

COVID-19’s spread varied by country, as did measures taken to control the spread. Impacts on Education app installs were also quite different, with Italy and Spain seeing higher growth than the U.S. and South Korea.

Week 0 marks the country’s 200th confirmed case of COVID-19. Growth is compared to each country’s average downloads during the five weeks prior to the country’s 200th confirmed case. China data only includes the App Store.

Quarterly U.S. downloads of top School Communication apps

Downloads for Top School Communication Apps

School Communication apps received the bulk of their downloads during the third quarter around the start of the school year in the U.S. Remind, ClassDojo, and Google Classroom were the top apps in Q3 each of the past three years.

In Q1 2020, the coronavirus created a shift towards remote education. Google Classroom was the primary beneficiary of this as it became the top overall Education app by U.S. installs in the quarter. Flipgrid, an app with a social focus, also experienced a boost in 1Q20.

Proportion of U.S. gross revenue by Language apps among top 100 Education apps

Top App Revenue Market Share

Duolingo had more than half of the U.S. revenue among top language apps in Q1 2020. This was up from 27 percent in 2018, when Rosetta Stone and Babbel were close behind at 22 percent each.

While Memrise’s U.S. revenue has remained steady at around $700K per quarter, other language apps like Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, and Pimsleur saw huge growth. As a result, Memrise's market share fell from 12 percent in 2017 to 3 percent in Q1 2020.
