Regina Coeli, K. 276by W.A. Mozart

o Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia; For He whom thou was made worthy to bear, alleluia;Hath risen again, as He said, alleluia;Pray for us to God, alleluia.o Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

Regina Coeli, composed around 1779, is an example of Mozart's late Salzburgtyle. Using the text but not the chant of this Marian anthem, the work wouldlave been performed at Vespers or at a Marian festival between Easter and

Pentecost. Unlike his earlier setting of the same text (K. 127), here Mozartavoided virtuosic solos, choosing instead a concerto style where the solos providethe contrasting episodes and the chorus adds the punctuation of Handelian"alleluias."

Ave Verum, K. 618by W.A. Mozart

[esu, Word of God Incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born; On the Cross Thysacred Body for us with nails was torn. Cleanse us by the Blood and Waterstreaming from thy pierced side. Feed us with Thy Body broken, now and indeath's agony.

Ave Verum was written in friendship for Anton Stoll in Baden (near Vienna).Composed in July 1791 while Mozart and his wife were trying to recuperate fromillness by taking the Baden spa waters, the piece was probably intended for thecelebration of Corpus Christi at the local church where Stoll served as choirdirector. Accordingly, the music is restrained and unostentatious in style. But itsdaring harmonies, unexpected melodic leaps, and dramatic use of overlappinglines at the conclusion reveal a highly personal, even Romantic, response to thetext. The Ave Verum remains one of Mozart's most enduring sacred works.

Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11by Gabriel Faure

Word equal to the Godhead, our unique hope, eternal day of the heavens andearth, we break the silence of the peaceful night. Divine Saviour, cast your eyesupon us! Send down on us the fire at the sound of your voice. Free a sufferingsoul from the sleep that leads it to forget your laws. Oh, Christ, be favorable tothis faithful people now gathered to bless you. Receive the hymns that they offerto your immortal glory, and may they return filled with your gifts.

Although he was highly regarded among other composers of his day, GabrielFaure did not reach his greatest popularity until after World War II. He is nowconsidered to be among the most important of the French Romantic composers, with frequent performances-of his Requiem and his many haunting, beautifulart songs.

The Roseby John Paynter

Of a rose singe weMisterium mirabile.

This rose is red of colour bright, thro' whom our joye gan alightUpon this Christmasse night,Claro David germine.

Of this rose was Christ ybore,To save mankind that was forlore, and us aile from sinnes sore.

Prophetarum carmine.Mira Plenitudine.Claro David Germine.Misterium mirabile.

This rose of floweres she is flower; She ne will fade for no shower; To sinful men she sent succor.

This rose is so fair of hue;In maid Mry that is so trueYborne was Lord of virtue,Salvator sine crimine.

Born and educated in London, John Paynter is adept at combining early musicaldevises with modem tonality. The Rose is representative of this style, utilizingelements of modal chant interspersed with tone clusters and other 20th centurytechniques. He teaches at the University of York.

Gloriaby Dominick Argento

Glory be to God on high. And on earth peace to men of goodwill. We praisethee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee. Glory be to God on high. And on earth peace to men of goodwill.

Dominick Argento has gained national attention as a composer of opera andchamber works. Gloria is from Argento's semi-staged opera, The Masque ofAngels, completed in 1963. A Regents Professor of Music at the University ofMinnesota, Argento received the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for his song cycle, Fromthe Diary of Virginia Woolf.

Two Motetsby William Hawley

1. Mosella (Ausonius, 310-395 A.D.)

What color that shoal, with the late shadow banished by Hesperus, and verdurefilling the hills of the Moselle! Everything floats, rippling together in motion, thedistant vine-leaf trembles, and the grape swells in the glittering water.

II. Te vigilans oculis (Petroni us Arbiter, c. 20 A.D.)

My eyes watch for you, by night my soul desires you, alone and overcome, my limbs tossing in bed.I have seen myself with you, in the imagination of sleep;in dreams you appear-if only you would truly come to me.

William Hawley was born in Bronxville, New York, and educated at IthacaCollege and the California Institute of the Arts. His works have been heardthroughout the United States, Europe and Japan. He lives in New York City.

La Passeggiataby Gioacchino Rossini

Calm and serene the heavens, limpid the waves below us,sailing from shore to shore guided alone by love.

To gentle winds and flowers we speak our words of love, all beating hearts together to them respond in love.

Winds now are blowing stronger, rippling the sea around us,winds are now whistling, winds are now blowing, quicklylet us depart and move on.

Ah! no, the moon appearing turns all our fear to gladness,in this delightful country we sing our songs of love.

In 1855, Gioacchino Rossini retired to Paris. Less than 20 years before he wasthe toast of European opera, but by now had become a wretched and unhappyman. Retirement suited him well, and 1857 he began to write once again, completing nearly 200 compositions in the last 11 years of his life. La Passeggiatais from Rossini's Sins of Old Age, a brilliant collection of short choral works.
