WORLD MUSIC( June 28 - August 2)

Page 5: 2011 Concert Season Brochure

The success of the Colorado Music Festival over the past decade is tremendously satisfying to me. With that success comes a sense of duty to present what I feel will continue to innovate and inspire. The 2011 season, my 11th as Music Director, is filled with musical performances that are events in every sense of the word.

As stewards of our musical heritage, the CMF presents many works not yet heard in the state of Colorado and in a few cases heard only in the mind’s ear of the composer, presented to you as World Premiers. I’m particularly excited to present a brand new overture commissioned by YOU through our CLICK! commissioning initiative.

In the spirit of making the concert experience as rich as possible, several multi-media projects are woven through the summer. Over 150 photographs by Ansel Adams are selected for Chris Brubeck’s journey through America. The Chicago Symphony’s beloved Beyond the Score® program comes to Chautauqua Auditorium with Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. I know many of you have enjoyed our efforts to take you deeper into the music we play. Like the Hubble Space Telescope, Beyond the Score® amplifies our grassroots efforts through video, acting and singing in a way only an institute with the resources of the Chicago Symphony could possibly produce. This is a must-see presentation.

I am also thrilled to welcome back the superstar Time for Three trio that dazzled our audience and orchestra last year for works they are writing themselves. We also welcome CMF veteran guest artists like Kelley O’Connor, Karen Gomyo, Orion Weiss and Jessica Rivera, while at the same time expanding our family with the introduction of conductor Ward Stare, jazz artist Marcus Roberts, violinst James Ehnes and soprano Hae Ji Chang.

As always, I’ve tried to make every program one you’d be disappointed to miss, so I hope that you will enjoy our performances often and bring someone along who has never had the opportunity to marvel at the talents of our CMF musicians and visiting artists.

Michael

OPENING NIGHT – WITH MICHAEL CHRISTIE & ORION WEISSBeethoven – Schubert – Tyberg

Sunday, June 26Pianist Orion Weiss returns by popular demand to kick off the 2011 season with music director Michael Christie and the CMF Chamber Orchestra. Weiss is one of the most sought-after soloists and collaborators of his generation and will open this spectacular concert season with Beethoven’s stormy Third piano concerto. The opening night extravaganza will continue with an historically rich symphonic ensemble featuring Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, also known as the “Unfinished.” Schubert’s masterpiece will manifest on stage, radiating the melancholy and underlying tension of the symphony’s tones. The Colorado premiere of Marcel Tyberg’s Completion of Symphony No. 8 will follow, both comple-menting and advancing the masterful work of Schubert’s original piece. Performed for only the second time ever, this symphony once hidden due to the terror of the Gestapo will emanate once again, exposing the brilliance of Tyberg to all.

MARCUS ROBERTS TRIOZimmerli – Gershwin – Copland – Brubeck

Thursday, June 30 & Friday, July 1A musical group dedicated to exposing the beauty of jazz music to as many people as possible, the Marcus Roberts Trio performs with Michael Christie and the CMF Festival Orchestra. Fresh pieces like the World Premiere of an Overture by Patrick Zimmerli will go hand-in-hand with classics like Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Copland’s Prairie Jour-nal. Alongside this trio, Chris and Dave Brubeck’s Ansel Adams: America boasts majestic photography of Ansel Adams while the CMF Festival Orchestra simultaneously captures the celebration of Americana through various rhythmic melodies. Collaborations such as this performance, guarantees musical euphoria.

PATRIOTISM & POPS –A SYMPHONIC TRIBUTE TO GREAT AMERICAN CITIES

REDISCOVERED MASTERSKorngold – Weinberg – Gorecki

Thursday, July 7 & Friday, July 8Infused with the electrifying voice of Soprano Jessica Rivera, Michael Christie and the CMF Festival Orchestra present Rediscovered Masters to festival audiences. The concert features works by composers whose music was silenced during World War II including Korngold’s Much Ado About Nothing, Weinberg’s Rhapsody on Molda-vian Themes, and Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs,” a piece made famous by the 1992 recording which shot up the charts, eventually selling well over a million copies. These concerts serve as reminders of the resilience and timelessness of music and its ability to resist oppression and censorship; certainly an evening of music not to be missed.

BEYOND THE SCORE®

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring

Thursday, July 21 & Friday, July 22The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s dynamic and innovative Beyond the Score® program comes to Chautauqua Auditorium for an in-depth, multi-media look at Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Discover the ancient, deep, and fascinating folk sources and savagely modern rhythms and harmonies in one of the most celebrated ballet scores ever written. The first half has been compared to an engaging “live documentary,” featuring slides, video, film clips, and narration to examine the music. After intermission, concertgoers return to the auditorium to hear a performance of the score, played in its entirety by the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra.

ST. MARTIN’S CHAMBER CHOIRArvo Pärt – Haydn – Fauré

Sunday, July 24Denver’s own St. Martin’s Chamber Choir will join Michael Christie and the CMF Chamber Orchestra for a breathtaking night of music including Arvo Pärt’s hypnotic Fratres for Strings and Percussion. Haydn’s somber “Trauersymphonie,” so called because he requested that its slow movement be played at his funeral, makes a dignified companion for the intimate and soul-penetrating Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, featuring the supple power of St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, and vocal solosists Stephen Powell, baritone and Hae Ji Chang, soprano.

THREE SONGSRavel – Mahler

Thursday, July 28 & Friday, July 29The CMF Festival Orchestra with conductor Michael Christie, and Grammy® award-winning Mezzo-Soprano Kelley O’Connor treat audiences to a production of Ravel’s Shéhérazade and Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, “Tragic.” While Shéhérazade found its origins within three poems of Tristan Klingsor (Asie, La f lûte enchantée, and L’Indifférent), Symphony No. 6 emits a tone mimicking the work’s title itself, both tragic and both a bit nihilistic. Both encompass an undeniable beauty that, when placed together with the breath-stopping singing of Kelley O’Connor, will surely send chills up any spine.

FANTASTIQUE FINALE – SHUFFLE MODE WITH TIME FOR THREEThursday, August 4 & Friday, August 5Michael Christie and the CMF Orchestra close the season featuring the dynamic string trio Time For Three (TF3) in one of the most interesting finales the Colorado Music Festival has ever seen. During these concerts, TF3 will join the orchestra for what Christie deems a “Shuffle Mode” performance in which this groundbreaking group will incorporate their original works with various song covers, as well as several classical works to musically tell the story of classical evolution. The second half of this not-to-miss finale concert will feature Berlioz’s magnificent Symphonie Fantastique. Buy your tickets early and bring your toe-tapping shoes because this finale will surely be one for the books.

MAGNIFICENT MOZARTSunday, July 31Join us for an all-Mozart evening with the CMF Chamber Orchestra, guest conductor Ward Stare, and Van Cliburn International Piano Competition gold medal-winning pianist Alex Kobrin. Described as “a compelling figure on the podium” and “one of the hottest young conductors in America” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Ward Stare is currently the Resident Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony. This magnificent evening of music will feature three masterpieces by the renowned composer — Symphony No. 32 in G major, Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major, and Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

KAREN GOMYO, VIOLINEight Seasons – Vivaldi & Piazzolla

Sunday, July 10Kicking off the Virtuoso Violins! mini-festival, Michael Christie leads the CMF Chamber Orchestra with Violinist Karen Gomyo in a performance of Eight Seasons, comprised of both Vivaldi’s and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons.” While each piece stands fervently on its own, when combined each work is immensely magnified. As described by violinist and conductor Gidon Kremer, Eight Seasons allows you to “enter a world in which you don’t think any more about the glamour of the music or music-making,” but think of “the cause of music as a language, music as something that is electrifying, as something that reminds us of being alive.”

CHAD HOOPES, VIOLINTchaikovskyFriday, July 15The CMF Festival Orchestra, conducted by Michael Christie, performs with violinist Chad Hoopes, a 16-year-old musician whose technical mastery has led him to perform with numerous ensembles worldwide. Together, the orchestra and Hoopes will embark on a purely Tchaikovsky journey featuring both his Violin Concerto - considered to be among the most technically difficult works for violinists - and Symphony No. 5.

HENNING KRAGGERUD, VIOLINSibelius & Mendelssohn

Thursday, July 14The CMF Festival Orchestra, conducted by Michael Christie, features Henning Kraggerud as the violin soloist for their performance of both Sibelius’s and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concertos. With a style orchestrated by a sweet-sounding tone and brilliant musical skill, Kraggerud’s articulated bow strokes will do wonders among the broad, depressing and sparingly bright moments scattered throughout Sibelius’s concerto, and Mendelssohn’s masterpiece - frequently regarded as one of the greatest violin concertos of all time. Also on this program is Sibelius’ Valse Triste and Mendelsshon’s Overture to The Fair Melusina.

The group, whether playing together as a whole or in featured duets, draws on O’Connor’s intensely rich musical history and as such deserves the reputation they possess as “among the most talented and exciting string players on the scene!” Note: This concert is not included in the mini-festival package but can be added for just $32 for section A, or $25 for section B.

JAMES EHNES, VIOLIN BeethovenSunday, July 17Michael Christie and the CMF Chamber Orchestra present Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral,” with violinist James Ehnes. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto boasts a reputation as one of the most important works of the violin repertoire, clearly exposing the sheer musical genius of this composer. The Pastoral Symphony does the same, depicting nature symphonically and transporting the great love of countryside that Beethoven possessed into an alluring masterpiece.

Venue All CMF concerts are held in the beautiful Chautauqua Auditorium located in historic Chautauqua Park (900 Baseline Rd., Boulder). The convergence of cultural programming within a stunning natural environment was an integral part of the Chautauqua movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. CMF is proud to continue this tradition, and encourages con-certgoers to explore the beauty of Chautauqua Park, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and indulge in the rich cultural programming available year-round. In February of 2006, Chautauqua Park was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks.

Box OfficeThe CMF Box Office is located in the kiosk on the Chautauqua grounds between the Auditorium and Dining Hall. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 90 minutes before all concerts for night-of-performance tickets only. The Box Office phone is 303-440-7666.

Ticket Exchanges All ticket exchanges must be made in person, at the CMF Box Office, during regular Box Office hours, Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during intermission. Please note that tickets may be exchanged only once.

Talks Under The TentJoin musicians, journalists, scholars and other guests for informative FREE pre-concert talks

under the CMF Tent on the north side of the Auditorium. Offered every Sunday and Thurs-day evening (except opening night and July 3) at 6:30 p.m.

HOP 2 Chautauqua 4 FREEThe Colorado Music Festival is committed to providing our patrons with convenient trans-portation options and parking solutions. We’re happy to once again work in collaboration with Go Boulder, Special Transit, the Colorado Chautauqua Association, and other partners to provide FREE shuttle service for all CMF performances.

On nights of performance, two shuttles will run continuous loops, approximately every 15 minutes, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (9:00 a.m. for Young People’s Concerts) until concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., and reverse the process after each performance. One shuttle will loop from downtown, starting at 13th and Pearl, and up 9th Street to the north side of Chautauqua Park. (Note: This route will require a short walk, uphill, from drop off on Baseline to the Auditorium.) The other shuttle will loop from the 27th Way Park ‘N Ride (at 27th and Broadway, just south of Basemar) up Baseline Road for drop off on the south side of the Auditorium. Both routes will include additional stops, marked by the Go Boulder symbol on RTD signs.

For additional route details please visit www.COmusic.org

Design-Your-Own Packages can now be purchased easily online beginning April 15, before single tickets go on sale to the public. They can also be purchased by phone at 303-440-7666, or or in person at the CMF Box Office beginning May 9.
