Worship Notes:

Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents the next sermon in his Christmas sermon series,“My Christmas Playlist.” Dan Stevens, our pastor for administration, hosts today’s worship and tells theChildren’s Story. Lonnie Melashenko, Kettering Health Network’s vice-president of Spiritual Services andMissions, reads today’s Scripture Lesson and presents the Prayers of the People. Jerry Taylor, our ministerof worship and music, is the organist/choir director for today’s service.

As we gather for worship, the Kettering Strings will play the Corelli which is alsoknown as the The strings are under the direction of Clifford Cabansag. The Bellsof Praise, under the direction of Joan Ulloth Dorgan, play a setting of Tammy Waldrop’s

and Barbara Kinyon’s setting of Hymn No. 136,

(Hymn No. 142) is a French carol from the eighteenth century. The textrefers to Luke 2:13-17 and the refrain is from Luke 2:14 which is the basis for today’s sermon. The practiceof singing the text in the vernacular and the chorus in Latin is called “macaronic” and is a direct quote fromthe earliest recorded Christian hymn of praise.

first appeared as a secular dance tune known as "le branle de l'Official in,” a dance book written by Jehan Tabourot (1519–1593). The lyrics, from English composer

George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848–1934), were first published in 1924 in his. Woodward had a particular interest in church bell

ringing, which had an influence on this carol. The words "swungen" and "sungen" in the second verse arearchaic English verb forms.

is an original Christmas song composed in 1989 by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Michael W. Smith. Thechoral arrangement heard today is by Ronn Huff. Greta Shull, a member of our choir and elementary musicteacher at Spring Valley Academy, is the soloist.

(Hymn No. 135) was chosen to follow the sermon because it captures the truemeaning of Christmas. It is one of the newer Christmas Carols written in 1868 by Philip Brooks, known as apowerful American preacher in Boston and Philadelphia. The tune, was composed for these wordsby Lewis Redner, organist at the Holy Trinity Church in Philadelphia.

, based upon Hymn No. 125, is heard in a setting for organ solo by Michael Bedford whois organist/choirmaster and composer-in-residence of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“Glory to God in the Lowest”Second message in series:

I. “Tell Me a Story of Christmas” (Luke 2:1-20) In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be takenof the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governorof Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.  So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the townof David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the timecame for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in clothsand placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks atnight. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, andthey were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that willcause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he isthe Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lyingin a manger.”  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God andsaying,  “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”  When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’sgo to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about thischild, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasuredup all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praisingGod for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Speak up andjudge fairly; defend the rights of the poor andneedy." (NIV) We are surrounded by the poor andneedy. The rich executive who seems to have lifeall together can have an impoverished soul. Thehomeless man on the street may have nowhere toturn because of mistakes he made, sins he orothers committed, mental illness, or a life full ofcircumstances he cannot control. The poor andneedy need us to help them. This does not meanwe live their life for them or do for them what theycan do for themselves. Helping the needy meanswe let them know we care. Helping others requiresus to “stand in the gap for our neighbors in need”.Most of the poor and needy want out of theircircumstances, and they are willing to work to getout. Even when you help others and they takeadvantage of you, you have still made an impactupon them. Even when you help others and theydo not express appreciation, your help is still ahelp. Appreciation should not be wanted orexpected by you, but know that God appreciatesyour giving. Please give generously to the 2011Annual Good Neighbor House Campaign.

We are starting the process for a newpictorial directory. You may submita family photo to the church office orvia email to [email protected]. Or takea moment during the next fewSabbath mornings to have yourpicture taken in the north fellowshiphall by our gracious volunteers. Please carefully check the contactinformation on the table and makecorrections necessary.
