WORSHIP NOTESParticipants: Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents the fourth sermon in his five-week series on

. Today we look at the “church.” Brendon Prutzman, our pastor for youth and administration, hosts today’s service and gives the children’s lesson. The scripture is read by the Wareham family.Marshall Wareham is an elder, chairman of the music committee and an ophthalmologist. KarenWareham is the music department volunteer, co-head deaconess, member of the choir, and homeschoolteacher. Elizabeth Wareham is a freshman homeschool student, member of the choir, and studies violinwith Dr. Won-Bin Yim. Grant Wareham is a 7th-grade homeschool student and studies organ with JerryTaylor.

Music: As we gather for worship we hear three organ pieces composed by Louis Vierne, who was organistat Notre Dame Cathedral at the turn of the twentieth century. These three pieces were chosen for today’sservice because they speak of church life. A is a song. A is harder to translate. It means toabide in or be held close. It is sometimes translated as a lullaby. The is to be lifted up. It is meantto be played during communion where the bread and wine are offered to us, Christ’s people.

(Hymn 348) was one of 12 hymns written to explain the “apostles creed”to people who couldn’t read. Our hymnal has stanzas 1, 2, 4 & 5 of the original 10 stanzas.

was originally conceived as the from the “Octet for Clarinet and Strings.” It waschosen for today’s service to represent one of the most important elements of a church, “prayer.” One musiceditor believes that Schubert referred to this piece as the “prayer” because first our petitions are given toChrist, (the violin solo) and then suddenly you realize that there is a duet going on, as if Christ were joiningin our prayer, and then the parts switch as if Christ answered our prayers and we are singing his praises.

was composed in 2002 and is sung by Cherié Haffner and accompanied by ElizabethWareham, violin, Dale Creech, piano, and with organ strings. It was chosen for today’s service because ofhow it refers to being close to Christ (and His people) and how that buoys up our spirits.

(Hymn 350) was written in 1782 by John Fawcett and printed inFawcett was a dearly loved Baptist

minister.

is an organ piece written by John Stainer for worship at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, GB. Thesong begins with a big sound, followed by a slower softer section written for the music to roll around in St.Paul’s, and then ends with an ornamented repeat of the beginning.

Getting God in ChurchFourth message in series:

I. Can you find God in church?(Acts 2:40-47, [Peter said] “Get out while you can; get out of this sick and stupid

culture!”41-42That day about three thousand took him at his word, were baptized and were signed up. They

committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.43-45Everyone around was in awe—all those wonders and signs done through the apostles! And all

the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they ownedand pooled their resources so that each person's need was met.

46-47They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, everymeal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Everyday their number grew as God added those who were saved.

II. What did they see?A. Compassionate treatment of ________________________________________Pliny the Younger: “Many persons of every age, every status and also of both sexes, are at risk of

joining the church. This contagion, has spread not only to cities but to villages and farms, but it seemspossible to check and cure it.”

B. Compassionate treatment of ________________________________________Julian the Apostate: “I think that when the poor were overlooked by the priests, the impious

Galileans noticed how the poor were being overlooked and devoted themselves to benevolence.”

C. Compassionate treatment of ________________________________________O.M. Bakke: The ancient world had no clear conception of childhood as we do and therefore

violence, infanticide, leaving a child to die of exposure, if it wasn’t wanted because of its gender or povertyor it was sickly or something—leaving it to die of exposure.”

(Galatians 3:28-29) In Christ's family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave andfree, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with JesusChrist.

III. Can we replicate the early Christian Church?www.stopthetraffik.org; www.rugmark.org; www.freetheslaves.net; www.polarisproject.org;www.castla.org; www.sojo.net; www.ijm.org; www.catwinternational.org; www.depdc.org

IV. Where do we begin? A. The hospitality cart B. The alter of prayer
