As we gather for worship we hear three “Advent” hymns. Advent is the season of the church year that weconsider the world awaiting Christ’s return both as a baby and as Redeemer of the Universe.

is a German Lutheran hymn in a setting by Bach that captures the feeling of “longing.”captures the drama of King Herod requiring that everyone return to their home villages. You can

almost picture Joseph and Mary and the donkey. On the journey the travelers sang songs.is a hymn from the early Christian Church known as the “O” antiphons because each begins with an “O”followed by a designation of our Lord in one of His titles. The “O” was a indication of an earnest longing forthe return of the Savior.

(Hymn 204) was written by Charles Wesley and published in This hymn expresses Israel’s fond hope for a Messiah and is saturated with

allusions to scripture and the first advent.

is based upon the eighteenth-century French carol,, 1855. The practice of singing part of the words in the vernacular and part in Latin is called

“macaronic.” , translates . The arrangement of this carol isby choir member, Kelly Wayne Eytcheson and is dedicated to Kettering church members, Al Brendel (nowdeceased) and his wife Betty Brendel who have been an inspiration to him. is based upon Hymn 210. Both words and music are by Philip Nicolaiand paraphrase the parable of the 10 virgins with their lamps trimmed and ready. The tune, translates from the German, J. S. Christmas! Every donation will help make Christmasmerry for our neighbors. Please drop off your giftsat the church office or Good Neighbor House, 844South Patterson Blvd., Dayton (45402). Call MarciaEhlers at (937)224-3003 Ext. 108 for moreinformation.About Helping Others — Proverbs 31:8,9 "Speakup for those who cannot speak for themselves, forthe rights of all who are destitute. Speak up andjudge fairly; defend the rights of the poor andneedy." (NIV) We are surrounded by the poor andneedy. The rich executive who seems to have lifeall together can have an impoverished soul. Thehomeless man on the street may have nowhere toturn because of mistakes he made, sins he orothers committed, mental illness, or a life full ofcircumstances he cannot control. The poor andneedy need us to help them. This does not meanwe live their life for them or do for them what theycan do for themselves. Helping the needy meanswe let them know we care. Helping others requiresus to “stand in the gap for our neighbors in need”.Most of the poor and needy want out of theircircumstances, and they are willing to work to getout. Even when you help others and they takeadvantage of you, you have still made an impactupon them. Even when you help others and theydo not express appreciation, your help is still ahelp. Appreciation should not be wanted orexpected by you, but know that God appreciatesyour giving. Please give generously to the 2011Annual Good Neighbor House Campaign.

Annual Candlelight ConcertFriday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m.
